Is Luoyang Worth Visiting in Winter? An Honest December-to-February Guide

Winter is Luoyang's most underrated season: thinner crowds, lower room rates and excellent indoor museums, while the Longmen Grottoes are easier to read without the summer haze. This guide separates December, January and February and gives a two-day winter route.

Every year after November, fewer people ask about Luoyang. The rest have almost the same question: If you go to Luoyang in winter, is there really nothing to see? My answer is a bit counterintuitive—winter is the most underrated season for Luoyang, provided you know what you're here for. If you want to see peony, see the whole city of greenery, or sit at the night market until midnight, then winter really isn't suitable. If you want to quietly see the grottoes, visit several museums at once, and spend half your summer accommodation budget living in the old city, winter is actually more comfortable than April. Doing the math is more useful than hearing people say it's worth it. Winter gives you Longmen Grottoes Few people in winter, no need to queue or move on the boardwalk, you can stop and observe the details peony Flower season is off, don't expect any "flower viewing" activities Hotel prices have dropped; room rates around the old town are much more pine than peak season Some outdoor live performances are closed for specific scenic area announcements Museums and ruins are temperature-controlled and unaffected by weather all day Night markets open late and close early; outdoor dining requires stalls with shelters Laojun Mountain Snowy times are one of the best times of the year Mountain cableways may be suspended due to strong winds or icing, so save your itinerary The most valuable part of this chart is the first row. Summer Longmen Grottoes You follow the crowd through the western hills, and looking back at photos are full of other people's heads. In winter, you can stand in front of Fengxian Temple, slowly gaze at the face of the Vairocana Buddha, and see how the strongmen and kings on either side stand. This kind of 'standing and staying' experience is something money can't buy. Many people treat winter as a whole, but the difference over these three months is significant. December is the month with the best value for money. The weather isn't at its coldest yet; walking a lap along the grotto boardwalk during the day can even feel a bit sunny; The number of tourists is the lowest of the year; Hotel and charter prices are negotiable. The downside is short daylight hours, it gets dark after 5 p.m., attractions usually close early, and the daily schedule is much less than in summer. The key variable in January is the Spring Festival. During the Spring Festival holiday, the crowds of Luoyang suddenly return to peak season levels, especially around the Old Town Crossroads, Luoyi Ancient City, Yingtian Gate, and the crowded areas at night. Outside of the Spring Festival, January is the quietest of the year—so quiet that some small shops close for days. If you come, avoid the holidays, or simply treat it as a trip to "see the lights and the night view." February is a transitional month. The early part still carries the festive atmosphere, then warms up in mid to late periods, with plum blossoms and winter jasmine gradually appearing, but the real big events won't happen until April. The advantage of February is that the weather starts to cooperate, the roads you can walk during the day get longer, and the mountains are no longer purely icy and snowy routes. First: Place Longmen Grottoes in the afternoon. In winter, the sun is low, and its slanting light shines on the cliff of Xishan makes the folds and outlines of the Buddha statues clearer than at noon. Conversely, backlighting in the morning makes photos look dull when taking photos. I usually recommend entering the scenic area around 2 a.m., walking from Xishan all the way to Fengxian Temple, then deciding whether to cross the bridge to Dongshan. The highlight of Dongshan is the panoramic view of Xishan; the winter air is fresh, making this visit well worth it. Second: Combine the museums into a single day. The exhibition halls around the Luoyang Museum, Erlitou Site Museum, and Sui-Tang Luoyang City ruins have constant indoor temperatures, unaffected by the weather outside. The advantage of this route is its steady rhythm—one museum in the morning, one at lunch, one in the afternoon, and returning to the city before dark. It's especially suitable for bringing elderly people and children, as you don't have to wait in the wind. Third: Pick a sunny day to go. If it's snowed for a snowy day, the golden summit, sea of clouds, and rime are the most distinctive sights of the year. But there's a prerequisite: you have to keep an eye on the weather, accept that the cable car might be suspended, and allow one day for maneuver. Treat it as a 'bonus' rather than a 'must-have'—your mindset will be much better. Check scenic spot announcements and real-time traffic conditions the day before departure—this is the phrase I repeat most every winter. peonyNo need to think about it—the flowering period is in April, and in winter, there aren't even buds. Most outdoor live performances are in a period of adjustment, so be sure to check the official schedule before going, not just follow summer guides. The night market is open as usual, but outdoor seats are cold, so locals prefer to pack up food or find stalls with heated canopies—this isn't a discount experience, it's a different way to eat. For the two winter days, I usually give it this way: Day 1, morning Luoyang Museum (indoors, first understand the city's outline), have a lunch at the old town Luoyang Water Banquet, enter at 2:00 PM, walk out before dark, and return to the old town crossroads for something hot in the evening. Day 2: Weather diversion: if the weather is good, go White Horse Temple, then walk the central axis and then see the International Buddha Temple; If you want to see the mountains, go early at Laojun Mountain, prepare for the day's round trip; If it's snowing and don't want to travel far, make up for Erlitou and Sui-Tang Luoyang City. During the two-day itinerary, I only keep one hard reservation; the rest are left as slots. The biggest variable in winter is the weather; filling up the itinerary is like competing with yourself. LuoyangWinter is dry and cold. The wind isn’t strong, but the temperature is low, and the temperature difference between morning and night often hovers around ten degrees. For clothing, I suggest three layers: a moisture-wicking base layer, a middle layer of fleece or thin down, and a windproof outer layer. Shoes are more important than clothes—both the grotto plank roads and the old city’s stone paths are hard, so the soles should be thick and non-slip. Don’t wear new shoes. Leave later when going out. Winter attractions generally close early. Whether you leave at 8:00 or 9:30, the actual time available to explore doesn’t differ much, but leaving at 9:30 avoids the coldest part of the morning. Keep a pair of touchscreen gloves on hand so you don’t have to take them off repeatedly for photos. Suitable for: people who dislike crowds, those who want to seriously view the grottoes and museums, budget-conscious travelers, and those traveling with elderly people. Not suitable for: people whose only goal is peony, those who want to stay in the night market until midnight, and those who insist on including mountainous areas in their itinerary without accepting any rescheduling. Q: Luoyang Does it snow in winter? Will it affect travel? Snowfall in the city is not much—only a few times a year, and it melts quickly when it lands. Real accumulation happens in mountainous areas like Luanchuan and Song County. Snow in the city generally doesn’t affect travel and makes for good photos; if it snows in the mountains, check road conditions and cable car announcements in advance. If necessary, move the mountain day to the end of the trip. Q: Is it cold in Longmen Grottoes in winter? How long does it take to walk? It’s cold, but bearable. Walking a loop from West Mountain to East Mountain, including taking photos, usually takes two to two and a half hours. The wind blows from the Yi River, and the neck and ears are the first to get cold. Scarves and hats help more than thick coats. There are indoor exhibition halls and rest points in the scenic area where you can take breaks. Q: Should I book hotels in December and January in advance? On non-holidays, there’s no need to book too early; checking prices three to five days in advance is fine. In the off-season, prices might even drop close to the date. But before and after the Spring Festival, it’s the opposite—the few days around then are the only peak season in Luoyang winter. Booking about two weeks in advance is safer, especially in the old city and around Yingtian Gate. Q: Is it suitable to take children to Luoyang in winter? Yes, but reduce outdoor time. My plan is one indoor venue in the morning, a short outdoor attraction in the afternoon, with a rest back at the hotel in between. Children are more sensitive to the cold than adults; if they get too cold, the rest of the trip is ruined. Museums have interactive exhibits, so staying two to three hours is fine. Q: What if the cable car in Laojun Mountain is closed in winter? Check the announcements before going out; that’s the only reliable way. If it is temporarily closed, the scenic area usually provides alternative arrangements or refunds according to on-site instructions. I suggest scheduling Laojun Mountain for the last day so that if you can’t go, you can switch to indoor city attractions with minimal loss. Final note: The question of "Is it worth it?" is never about the season, but what you want from the trip. In winter, you won’t get sea of flowers or bustling crowds, but you will get quiet, lower prices, and clearly visible grottoes. For some people, that trade-off is very worthwhile.
