Changing Trains at Zhengzhou East: A Transfer Checklist for the City, Kaifeng and Luoyang

Zhengzhou East is Henan's biggest transfer hub, and picking the wrong square or floor costs twenty minutes. This checklist splits three destinations, explains when to use metro, intercity rail, high-speed rail or coaches, and how much buffer to leave.

ZhengzhouEast Station is a place where it's easy to just stand there and daydream. The station building is large, with many exits and multiple levels; the announcements are always playing, and people keep walking. The most common move for first-time visitors is to drag their suitcase back and forth on the arrival level looking at the signs for five minutes, then randomly pick an exit to go up. The cost of choosing the wrong exit isn't taking the wrong route, but a long detour back to the starting point. So after getting off, don't rush to leave. First, follow the checklist below to confirm these three things, and the road ahead will be much smoother. First, what type of transportation will your next leg take? Subway, intercity train, high-speed rail, long-distance bus—these four correspond to four completely different directions at this station. Entering the wrong passage and exiting is like walking all over again. Second, whether you want to go to East Square or West Square. This is the most common confusion. At the same station, two plazas leading out face two different directions of the city, separated by a whole station building. If you go wrong, it takes more than ten minutes to detour. Third, what about luggage? Transferring with a suitcase and transferring empty-handed are two different experiences. There is storage service inside the station; business hours are based on on-site announcements. If you're in a hurry and don't want to drag your suitcase, store it before leaving. The general layout of these large high-speed rail stations is upper entry and bottom exit: the upper floor is the departure level, the ground floor is the arrival level, and the underground is the subway and parking lot. When you get off the platform and follow the crowd, you usually go to the ground level first, then split into various directions. Remember this principle: going underground means entering the city, going above ground means exiting, going up is taking the train. If you want to take the next high-speed train or intercity train, just go up; To take the subway or a taxi into the city, go down; To pick up passengers or find a long-distance bus, find the corresponding exit on the ground level. For specific directions in each passageway, please refer to the on-site directions within the station. Destination: Preferred Method: Alternative: How much time to reserve? Zhengzhou Downtown Metro, direct to major business districts Ride-hailing and taxis, avoid evening rush hour Metro is about half an hour away, take a taxi depending on traffic conditions Kaifeng Intercity trains, frequent schedules High-speed train arrives at Kaifeng North Station, then enters the city Travel takes about half an hour, leaving 20 minutes at each end Luoyang High-speed train arrives at Luoyang Long-distance bus goes directly to the city bus station Travel time is about an hour, transfer leaves 40 minutes Leave 40 minutes Xinzheng Airport Intercity train direct Airport shuttle and ride-hailing car Calculate backward by flight schedule, don't get too caught The most important explanation in this table is the line Kaifeng. There are two types of railways to Kaifeng: one is the intercity route starting from here, ending on the Kaifeng city side and very close to the city; the other is the high-speed rail, arriving at Kaifeng North Station, which is some distance from the old town and scenic spots, and it takes more time. If you have luggage and want to visit the day, prioritize the former. The subway is the safest. It is unaffected by road conditions, runs frequently, and can reach key locations like the train station or Erqi Square. The downside is that it is crowded during peak hours, making it inconvenient to carry large luggage up and down the escalator. Ride-hailing is suitable for people with lots of luggage or remote destinations. There is a designated boarding area; follow the signs and don't hail at the exit; the driver won't find you, and you won't find the car. Taxis: queue up to board, order is good, and there are few trains during peak hours. If you're in a hurry, don't bet on this. Public bus: Suitable for those who aren't in a hurry and want to save money. The route covers a wide range but takes a long way, not recommended for first-time visitors. My default suggestion: arrive during the day, go to the city center, take the subway; Arrive at night if you have lots of luggage, call a ride-hailing car; If you're rushing to catch a plane or high-speed train, always use the subway plus intercity trains, avoid surface transportation. The high-speed trains from Zhengzhou to Luoyang are very dense, with many trips per day, and the journey takes about an hour. The key isn't buying tickets, but clearly checking the departure station—Zhengzhou has more than one high-speed rail station for passengers. The ticket says the station you must go to, and choosing the wrong station is the most common mistake on this line. When you arrive at Luoyang Longmen Station, after exiting, you have two directions: heading to the city center and to Longmen Grottoes. If you have a lot of luggage, first arrange storage before discussing the itinerary. I wrote about this in my post Luoyang. If you can't get a suitable high-speed train, long-distance buses are a viable alternative. There are bus stations outside the station with plenty of service, but the downside is road conditions are very affected, and rain or snow is unreliable. Transferring within the station means leaving 40 minutes for the same-stop transfer is comfortable, 30 minutes is tight, and within 20 minutes you basically rely on running, so you have to bet on not being late on the first trip. Cross-station transfers (for example, transferring from here to Zhengzhou station to take the bus) start at one hour, plus the time spent entering and exiting the station and traveling, so two hours is more reliable. If you're traveling with elderly or children, have lots of luggage, or are coming for the first time, add another 20 minutes. The station building is large, and it takes time to walk from one end to the other. You only see the words Zhengzhou and get on. Zhengzhou There are multiple bus stations; you need to read all the station names on the ticket. The east and west squares are reversed. This is the easiest thing to do when picking up passengers and being picked up; before departure, check the plaza names carefully. Repeatedly look for the subway on the arrival level. The subway is below; just follow the signs down. Going to Kaifeng, I ended up buying a high-speed train to Kaifeng North. After getting off, there's still some hassle, especially with luggage. Count transfer time as zero. You might think getting off means you're already on the platform, but in reality, you still need to exit, find the passage, and go through security again to enter the station. Eat meals on the train. There are quite a few dining options inside the station but prices are relatively high. If you have plenty of time, eat outside the station; if in a hurry, grab two items from a convenience store to take with you. Q: How long does it take from Zhengzhou East Station to the city center? A: It's about half an hour by subway to the core business area. By taxi, it depends on road conditions; over twenty minutes when smooth, possibly double during evening peak. Refer to real-time navigation and schedules for that day. Q: Should I take the intercity train or high-speed train to Kaifeng? A: If you want to tour that day and carry luggage, take the intercity train, since the terminal is close to the city; if you only seek speed and someone will pick you up, you can take the high-speed train to Kaifeng North Station. Check the arrival station carefully before buying tickets, as this is the step most prone to mistakes. Q: How long should I allow for transfers inside the station? A: For same-station transfers, forty minutes is comfortable, thirty minutes requires moving quickly, and less than twenty minutes is not recommended. For cross-station transfers, plan for two hours, don’t gamble on traffic. Q: Can luggage be stored? A: There are storage services inside the station, charged per piece, with specific business hours. People catching late trains should pay attention to the pickup cutoff time. For exact locations and fees, refer to on-site announcements. Q: Is there subway service if I arrive at night? A: There are last train times for the subway, usually before the last high-speed train. If arriving late at night, check the last train schedule in advance or directly arrange a rideshare, so you won’t end up at the platform to find the gates already closed. Q: If it’s my first time, which area is convenient to stay in? A: If just transferring for one night, stay near the station for convenience; if staying in Zhengzhou for two to three days, stay along the subway line close to the city center, convenient for dining and shopping. There are many business hotels around the station, but there isn’t much to do at night. One more thing: Transfers at major stations are never about physical effort, but about information. Before getting off, think clearly about your destination, the square, and the floor. This will cut the walking distance inside the station by half.
