How Much Cheaper Is Henan in the Off-Season? Hotels, Tickets, Transport and Food Broken Down

Off-season savings are real, but most people guess the wrong line items. This breaks down hotels, tickets, transport and food, explains why tickets barely move, and subtracts the hidden costs of travelling when things close.

Every year after November, people ask me the same question: Is it much cheaper to go to Henan now? My answer is always the same: cheaper, but not as much as you think, and part of the money saved is eaten up by other things. The reason I dare say this is because the logic for price cuts in these expenses is completely different. Accommodation is set by the market—if there are fewer people, prices drop; Tickets are government-guided, fixed for the whole year; Transportation depends on the method: planes are heavily discounted, high-speed rail doesn't give a cent; Dining is almost unchanged. Mixing together and saying 'save money in the off-season' is basically saying nothing. Late November to mid-December is the loosest period of the year. The people enjoying autumn have left, those visiting peony haven't arrived yet, the weather isn't at its coldest yet, and hotel and charter prices are all low. Mid-December to mid-February is the coldest period and also the lowest price, but the Spring Festival is in between. During the Spring Festival, foot traffic and prices suddenly return to peak season levels, especially around the old city and scenic areas, where prices can soar. If you want to save money, avoid holidays. Late February to mid-March is the transition period for warming up. Prices haven't risen yet, and the weather starts to cooperate—that's when I'm most willing to take people out. A reminder: April, May, July to August summer vacation, and October National Day — these four periods are clearly peak seasons, so don't expect cheap prices at any time. Expenses Off-season Compared to Peak Season Why Accommodation Drops the Most, Mid-Range Hotels Often See 20-30% Decline Purely Market Behavior: Vacant Rooms Cost Tickets Basically Remain Unchanged, Some Scenic Spots Have Off-Season Prices Government-Guided Prices Remain the Same Year-Round Transportation Flight Ticket Prices Drop Largely, High-Speed Rail Remains Unchanged, Chartered Cars Have Bargaining Room Airlines Fluctuate Based on Supply and Demand, Railway Ticket Prices Fixed Dining Rates Almost Unchanged, Per Capita May Decrease Locals Eat as Usual, Fewer Tourists Affect Unit Prices Understand This Table Helps Avoid Common Misjudgments: Many People Think Off-Season Tickets Are Discounted, But Turns Out Not Much Goes Down at Scenic Spots. Henan Main scenic spots have a different price per year. Hoping to save money on tickets is wrong from the start. Accommodation is the only real way to save money during the off-season. The logic is simple: rooms can't be stored; if they're empty tonight, they'll always be empty, so price elasticity is greatest in the off-season. The price cuts depend on location. Areas around the old city and tourist attractions like Luoyang and Kaifeng where tourists dine are most likely to see the decline in the off-season, where the same store can see a big gap between peak and off-season; New districts and businesses near high-speed rail stations Business hotels already have a lot of business travelers, so prices fluctuate little. Another level is 'being able to choose.' During peak season, you can only choose from the remaining rooms; during off-season, you can choose the orientation, floor, and room type. Specific room rates fluctuate with the date, and the prevailing rates on each platform apply. Products like entire rental homes or full courtyard short-term rentals have greater bargaining power in the off-season compared to hotels. You can negotiate directly with the host, and the discount often exceeds platform discounts. Most of Henan’s main scenic spots follow government-guided prices, which remain the same throughout the year; there are no off-season discounts. A few scenic spots may offer off-season promotions or regional combination tickets, but these are exceptions, not the rule. The real way to save on tickets is not to wait for the off-season, but to choose combinations: combination tickets are more cost-effective than single-point tickets, provided you are visiting each spot; bring all valid tickets for student, senior, or children discounts; some scenic spots have reservation-based free open days, which require checking and booking in advance. Another often overlooked point: some scenic spots undergo maintenance in the off-season, and certain venues may close or have reduced opening hours. Before buying tickets, confirm the opening status on that day; specific opening times and ticket price policies are subject to official announcements from the scenic spot. Airfare Zhengzhou drops the most in the off-season, especially on routes from northern cities, where the difference between off-season and peak-season fares can be significant. The savings here often surpass accommodation costs. High-speed rail does not fall into this category. Ticket prices are set by mileage and do not fluctuate with the season. The only advantage of the off-season is that tickets are easier to get, allowing you to choose suitable times without changing your schedule to secure a ticket. The price of chartered cars and drivers is noticeably flexible in the off-season. During peak season, there aren't enough cars, and prices are rigid; in the off-season, cars are waiting for customers, and daily rates can be negotiated, with bigger discounts for multi-day long-term hires. A bowl of Huimian or a portion of Guantangbao does not change in price due to off-season. Budget this part according to peak-season prices; don’t expect savings. What changes is 'whether you have to queue.' In peak season, waiting forty minutes outside a popular shop is common; in the off-season, you can enter directly. Restaurants in scenic areas are full in peak season but have available seats in the off-season. The time saved is valuable for the itinerary, even if money isn’t saved. Another structural difference is business operation rates. Some small shops that rely on tourists close in the off-season, especially stalls around scenic spots that only operate during peak season. If you want to eat at a specific shop, check in advance whether it’s open. Performances may be suspended. Most outdoor live performances have seasonal breaks, especially mountain-and-water themed shows, which stop in winter. If you plan a trip around a specific performance, first confirm whether it is being held. Cable car and facility maintenance. The off-season is the maintenance window; mountain cable cars and some experience activities may be suspended. You can't climb the mountain or enjoy the attractions, and the saved ticket money can't make up for the experience. Short daylight. In winter, it gets dark after 5 a.m., so the daily schedule is much less than in summer. For the same four days, the actual activities in the off-season might only be three and a half days in the peak season, meaning the unit cost is spread up. Mountain road conditions. Mountain roads are hard to travel in rain or snow, so chartered cars may pay extra and itineraries may be forced to change. This cost is hard to estimate, but you should leave some room for it. Urban culture line (Luoyangplus Kaifeng, four days). Mainly indoor museums and ancient towns, least affected by seasons. Accommodation drops by 20-30%, tickets remain unchanged, transportation depends on your approach, overall you can save some money, the most reliable cost-effectiveness. Mountain and water routes (Laojun Mountain, Yuntai Mountain types, four days). The highest risk. Cable cars may stop, mountain roads may be closed, performances may be canceled, and the money saved can easily be offset by a single itinerary change. If you want to take this route, allow flexible time. Long-distance connections (six to seven days, multiple cities). Save the most because both accommodation and charter services are reduced; the longer the days, the higher the total cost. The premise is that you can accept early dark and some locations closed. If you come specifically for a performance, a flower, or a seasonal attraction, don't choose the off-season. The money saved won't buy what you want to see. If you're traveling with elderly or children or have low tolerance, don't force the coldest time slots. If you catch a cold once, the whole trip will be completely different. Q: What is the off-season for Henan? Roughly, it's from late November to mid-March of the following year, except during the Spring Festival holiday. Prices are lowest during this period, but the weather is coldest and some attractions are closed. Aprilpeony, summer, and National Day are clearly peak seasons. Q: Are there really no discounts on off-season tickets? Most major scenic spots follow government-guided prices, with a fixed standard for the whole year and no discounts. A few scenic spots offer off-season discounts or combined tickets, which are exceptions. Specific ticket prices and discount policies are subject to official announcements by the scenic area; don't budget based on old online information. Q: Should I book hotels in advance during the off-season? Generally, you don't need to rush, but popular homestays and mountaintop accommodations have limited room availability, so it's still recommended to book early. The advantage of the off-season is that you can choose your options. If you book early, you might not get a discounted room on the same day, so you can reserve part of your itinerary for on-site booking. Q: How much cheaper is a car charter in the off-season? There is room to negotiate; long-term discounts for multiple days are more obvious, depending on the car type, mileage, and number of days. There are plenty of cars available in the off-season, so asking two companies before booking is much easier than during peak season. Q: Which areas are least affected when visiting Henan in winter? Museums, ruins and venues, and old city districts—places that are mainly indoor or open all day—are least affected. Longmen Grottoes Winter is less crowded, so you can see more clearly. Mountain areas and outdoor performances have the biggest impact. A side note: Saving money in the off-season means saving on room and airfare, not tickets; The losses are in sunlight, performances, and some luck. Count both sides in your mind to know whether this trip is really worth it.
