Closed Tuesdays; special exhibits may need booking.; Datang Everbright City: Official: A pedestrian cultural street extending from the south square of Xi’an’s Big Wild Goose Pagoda, famed for Tang-style architecture, night shows, lights and viral performances. Personal note: Evening to late night is busiest; check show times. Hanfu photographs very well here.
Day 2 Xi'an – Terracotta Army – Huaqing Pool (exterior) – Muslim Quarter
Full day at the Terracotta Army with a professional guide; on the way back view Huaqing Pool and Lishan; evening free time at Muslim Quarter for yangrou paomo and roujiamo. [Attraction intro] Terracotta Army: Official: The burial pits of Qin Shi Huang’s mausoleum, discovered in 1974 and a 1987 World Heritage Site; Pits 1–3 yielded ~8,000 pottery figures and horses. Personal note: Pit 1 is most stunning—get a guide. Lots of walking; pair with Huaqing Pool and Lishan.
Day 3 Xi'an – Hanyang Mausoleum – Xi'an City Wall
Morning at Hanyang Mausoleum underground museum; afternoon ascend Xi’an City Wall, with an optional bike ride for an overhead view of the old city. [Attraction intro] Hanyang Mausoleum: Official: The joint tomb of Emperor Jing of Han and Empress Wang on the Xianyang plateau, noted for its underground museum and large numbers of excavated pottery figures. Personal note: The underground hall is air-conditioned—bring a light layer. Fewer visitors, ideal for history and archaeology buffs.; Xi’an City Wall: Official: A Ming-dynasty city wall 13.74 km around, the largest and best-preserved ancient city wall in China; Yongning (South) Gate is the most intact. Personal note: Rent a bike and ride a section; South Gate up and Hanguang Gate down is classic. Evening offers sunset and lights.
Day 4 Xi'an – Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Ci'en Temple) – Transfer out
Morning at Ci'en Temple and Big Wild Goose Pagoda, learning about Xuanzang’s journey to India; afternoon transfer to the station. [Attraction intro] Big Wild Goose Pagoda: Official: In Ci’en Temple south of Xi’an, built in 652 by Xuanzang to house scriptures from India—a city landmark with a famous north-square music fountain. Personal note: At night the fountain and lit pagoda are beautiful; temple/pagoda entry is separate. Nearby Datang Everbright City is worth a stroll.
