Day 1 Datong – Yungang Grottoes – Datong Old City

Morning at Yungang Grottoes; afternoon at Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple and Datong Old City. Overnight in Datong. [Attraction intro] Yungang Grottoes: Official: In Datong (Shanxi), carved in the Northern Wei, with 45 major caves and 59,000+ statues; a 2001 World Heritage Site, the Tanyao Five Caves are iconic. Personal note: No photos inside; focus on Caves 5, 6 and the Tanyao Five. A guide helps you grasp the Northern Wei history behind the statues.

Day 2 Datong – Hanging Temple – Yingxian Wooden Pagoda – Transfer to Mount Wutai

Morning at Hanging Temple; afternoon exterior view of Yingxian Wooden Pagoda; evening arrive at Mount Wutai’s Taihuai Town. [Attraction intro] Hanging Temple: Official: On a cliff of Cuiping Peak by Hunyuan (Datong), founded in the late Northern Wei, the only existing temple blending Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, perched in mid-air. Personal note: Climbing entry requires a separate ticket and is capped; queues are long in peak season. Wooden stairs are narrow and steep. The best photo spot is the bridge at the entrance.

Day 3 Mount Wutai Pilgrimage Day

Visit core Mount Wutai temples: Puxian Summit, Xiantong Temple, Tayuan Temple and Wuye Temple, feeling the Manjushri atmosphere. [Attraction intro] Mount Wutai: Official: In Shanxi, the foremost of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains and Manjushri’s seat, with 100+ temples since the Tang, a 2009 World Heritage Site. Personal note: High altitude, cold mornings/evenings—bring a coat even in summer; windy peaks; the kora is long, pace yourself.

Descend from Mount Wutai in the morning; afternoon at Qiao Family Compound; evening arrive in Pingyao and stroll Ming–Qing Street. Day 6 Pingyao – Wang Family Compound – Transfer out

Morning at Wang Family Compound; afternoon drop-off at Taiyuan or Pingyao station. [Attraction intro] Wang Family Compound: Official: A Ming–Qing residential complex in Jingsheng (Lingshi, Shanxi), grand in scale and called the “Forbidden City of the folk,” famed for fine brick, wood and stone carvings.
