Day 1 Luoyang – Laojun Mountain
Drive to Laojun Mountain in Luanchuan, cable car to the Golden Summit and Ten-li Painting Screen. Overnight in Luanchuan. [Attraction guide] [Laojun Mountain] In Luanchuan (Luoyang), Laojun Mountain is part of the Funiu Nature Reserve; its Jade Emperor Peak rises to 2,217 m and is named for Laozi's retreat. The core sights are the Golden Summit temples (Golden Hall, Jade Emperor Peak, Liangbao Terrace, Jade Emperor Temple), the Ten-li Painting Screen cliff walkway and a glass viewing platform, with cable cars for both ways and a loop trail along the Painting Screen. Not to be missed: the sunrise sea of clouds over the Golden Summit on a clear morning, and the sweeping view of the Funiu range from the Painting Screen—She Shen Cliff and the glass platform are also great for photos. Practical notes: the summit runs 8–10°C colder, so bring a windproof jacket; cable-car queues are long in peak season, so go early; wear non-slip shoes for the many steps, and boardwalks may close in rain/snow/fog—check the weather first; food on the mountain is pricey, so bring your own water. All in all, this is a rare large golden temple complex in the north and the sunrise clouds are well worth it—one of my favorite mountain escapes. Go before 7 am to beat the crowds; take both cable cars if less fit, or hike the Painting Screen loop. Winter snow is beautiful but slippery.
Day 2 Chongdu Valley
Full day at Chongdu Valley, Jinji and Dicui rivers for waterfalls and bamboo, cooling off in the water. Overnight in Luanchuan. [Attraction guide] [Chongdu Valley] Chongdu Valley in Luanchuan (Luoyang) is famed for water, bamboo and waterfalls—nicknamed "Jiuzhaigou of the North." It splits into three zones: Jinji River, Dicui River and Water-Curtain Fairy Palace. Feihong Falls, the Xiefen Cliff waterfall cluster and the Dicui River bamboo sea are the signatures, with a farm village and grass-sliding for a relaxed pace. The wet paths are slippery—hold children's hands; summer crowds are big, so staying inside the park saves time; after rain it's slick and mosquitoes are abundant, bring repellent. It's a classic water-play summer escape with mature facilities and a slow pace, great for families. Pair it with Laojun Mountain for a "mountain + water" Luanchuan combo—spend a full day, and don't just hit the falls; the bamboo walk is the real gem.
Day 3 Jiguan Cave – Return to Luoyang
Morning at Jiguan Cave for stalactites and stone curtains; return to Luoyang in the afternoon. [Attraction guide] [Jiguan Cave] Jiguan Cave in Luanchuan (Luoyang) is a large limestone karst cave at a constant ~18°C, with zones like Jade Pillar Pool and Colorful Hall; stalactites, stalagmites and curtains take countless shapes under the lights, and "Dinghai Needle" and "Thousand-year Kiss" are the signature forms—earning it the name "top cave of the North." Inside it's slippery with many steps, so hold the rail; bring a light jacket for the cool; the light show runs on a schedule, so follow a guide; signal is weak, don't fall behind. It pairs with Chongdu Valley as mountain-and-water, up-and-down, half a day is enough, and the cool interior makes it a great Luanchuan summer partner. The appeal is all in the lit formations—take a guide or it feels dull.
