Highlights
Day 1: Sui-Tang Luoyang City
In the morning, assemble and set off for Sui-Tang Luoyang City, follow the guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for photos and rest; at noon, enjoy local specialty cuisine, and in the evening, check into the hotel to recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Sui-Tang Luoyang City attractions. The Sui-Tang Luoyang City National Heritage Park, centered around Yingtian Gate, Mingtang, and Tiantang, restores the palace grandeur of the Tang Dynasty's "Divine Capital" Luoyang. Yingtian Gate is the main southern gate of Sui-Tang Luoyang City, majestic in scale; climbing the tower offers a view of the central axis, and at night there is a spectacular light show. Mingtang was the "Ten Thousand Phenomena Divine Palace" during Empress Wu Zetian's time, while Tiantang is a tall tower for Buddhist rituals. The interiors of both buildings restore the magnificent furnishings of the Tang court. Walking along Jiuzhou Pool is also pleasant, evoking the grandeur of the royal gardens of the past. This place is closely associated with TV series such as "Wu Zetian" and "The Rise of Luoyang," and in recent years it has become the most popular Tang culture check-in spot in Luoyang. My understanding is that it is a must to visit at night—the lights of Yingtian Gate and Mingtang Tiantang when the lamps are just lit are the true representation of the "Divine Capital"; seeing the palace furnishings during the day and the light show at night offers two kinds of experiences in one day.
Tips: Attractions in the ancient capital are spread out, requiring a lot of walking and transfers, so it is recommended to wear comfortable flat shoes and plan your route carefully. Visitor feedback generally indicates that most tourists think Sui-Tang Luoyang City is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide for explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Considering the actual situation, the worst scenario when touring with a group is rushing through; listening to the explanations is the essence. The cultural stories behind each attraction are often more unforgettable than the photos. If you don't understand something, ask the guide on the spot.
Day 2: Jiguan Cave
Gather in the morning and depart for Jiguan Cave, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, and allow plenty of time for photography and rest; at noon, enjoy local specialty meals, and in the evening, check into the hotel to recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: This stop is Jiguan Cave. Jiguan Cave is a karst cave in Luanchuan, with stalactites in myriad shapes. Stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone flowers transform into dazzling colors under the lights, with a constant comfortable temperature year-round, warm in winter and cool in summer. The cave is densely packed with sights, changing scenery with each step, and with explanations, you can understand the miraculous geological changes over hundreds of millions of years. Together with Longtan Grand Canyon, forming a cave-and-gorge pairing, it complements each other and is a classic geological wonder route in western Henan. In my understanding, when entering the cave, remember to follow the explanation; the formation and naming of stalactites are very interesting, and it’s easy to miss highlights if you look on your own. The cave floor is slippery, and some areas are low, so wear non-slip shoes and watch your head.
Tips: There is a large temperature difference in the mountains between morning and evening, and the wind is strong at the top, so a windproof jacket and warm inner layers are very necessary. Visitors generally give feedback that most of them believe Jiguan Cave is worth a special visit; it is recommended to slow down, follow the guide’s explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best spots for photos. In practice, if you want authentic food, go deeper into the alleys; queues at the main gate of attractions are long and the taste is generally average. For local specialties, check the price first and compare, as the local supermarket is often more reliable.
Day 3: Laojun Mountain
Assemble in the morning and depart for Laojun Mountain, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for taking photos and resting; enjoy local specialty dishes at noon, check into the hotel in the evening, and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Laojun Mountain attractions. Laojun Mountain is located in Luoyang Luanchuan County and is the main peak of Funiu Mountain. It is also a famous Taoist mountain, reputed to be the place where the Taoist founder Laozi retreated and cultivated. The Jinding Taoist temple complex stands atop a peak more than two thousand meters above sea level. The temple features golden roofs and red walls, surrounded by a sea of clouds, and is renowned for the saying, 'Travel far to witness the astounding feast of the human world, and behold the splendor of the mortal realm.' Shili Huaping (Ten-Mile Painting Screen) is the highlight of the entire trip, a high-altitude walkway suspended on a cliff offering changing views, with peak forests, sea of clouds, and sunrise all in sight. Visitors can ascend by a two-stage cable car; on clear days, you can watch the sunrise over the sea of clouds from the top, and in winter, it is a highly popular spot for snow viewing in the Central Plains. My understanding is that you must take the cable car early to get the best light for Jinding and Shili Huaping; the mountaintop is windy and cold, so a windbreaker and a thermos are standard. If you are faint-hearted, avoid the glass observation deck.
Friendly Tips: The mountain paths are often slippery, especially downhill—make sure to shift your center of gravity back and slow your pace, and consider carrying knee pads. Visitors generally report that the sea of clouds and sunrise at Jinding are the biggest highlights, with many staying overnight at the mountaintop to catch dawn. Remember that the temperature at the top fluctuates greatly and cable cars may have long queues, so during peak season, go early. Based on your actual condition, manage your energy wisely: tackle the main attractions in the morning when you are fresh, slow down in the afternoon, and don't exhaust yourself on the first day, or you won't have energy for the following days.
