Luoyang 4-day tour covering Chongdu Valley and Laojun Mountain and Yin Xu. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Chongdugou
Assemble in the morning and depart for Chongdugou. Follow the guide to visit the main attractions, leaving plenty of time for taking photos and resting. Enjoy a local specialty meal at noon, and in the evening check into the hotel to recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes the Chongdugou attraction, Chongdugou is located in Luanchuan and is known for its vast bamboo groves, cascading waterfalls, and Henan western rural farming charm. It is a rare 'Jiangnan water town'-style summer retreat and leisure destination in Henan. The scenic area is divided into two sections: Jinji River and Dicui River. Jinji River is famous for its waterfalls, with splashing water and a cool, refreshing atmosphere; Dicui River features contiguous bamboo groves, offering a green view all around when strolling through it. Here, you can stay at farmhouse accommodations, taste wild mountain vegetables, and experience the authentic life of Henan western villages. The pace is relaxed, making it particularly suitable for family leisure trips and summer vacations. My understanding is to slow down the pace and not rush to see attractions—walking in the bamboo forest or sitting by the stream is the proper way to enjoy Chongdugou. Summer is the most comfortable season to visit; it’s so cool you won’t want to leave.
Tips: The water areas along the canyon are slippery, so make sure to wear anti-slip creek shoes or sports shoes, and take measures to waterproof valuables such as your phone. Tourist feedback generally indicates that most visitors think Chongdugou is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide's explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Consider the actual situation, respect local customs, dress appropriately in religious sites, and do not point randomly; a simple greeting can invite goodwill.
Day 2: Laojun Mountain
Assemble in the morning and depart for Laojun Mountain, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing plenty of time for photos and rest; have a local specialty meal at noon, check into the hotel in the evening, and rest up for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Laojun Mountain attractions. Laojun Mountain is located in Luoyang Luanchuan County, the main peak of Funiu Mountain, and a famous Taoist mountain, traditionally believed to be the place where the founder of Taoism, Laozi, retired for cultivation. The Jin Ding Daoist temple complex stands atop a peak more than 2,000 meters above sea level, with golden tiles and red walls, surrounded by rolling sea of clouds. It is famously described as "a stunning feast for the eyes in the human world, a glimpse of worldly splendor." Shili Huaping (Ten-Mile Screen) is the highlight of the entire route, a high-altitude walkway suspended along a cliff that changes scenery with every step, offering panoramic views of the peaks, clouds, and sunrise. Visitors can ascend the mountain via a two-stage cable car; on clear days, you can watch the sunrise over the sea of clouds from the top, and in winter, it is a highly popular spot for snow viewing in the Central Plains. My suggestion is to catch the cable car early to secure good lighting at Jin Ding and Shili Huaping; it is windy and cold at the top, so a windproof jacket and a thermos are essential, and those afraid of heights should avoid the glass observation deck.
Tips: The temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains is large, and it is very windy at the peak, so a windproof jacket and warm inner layers are necessary. Visitors generally agree that the main attractions are the sea of clouds and sunrise at Jin Ding; many people even stay at the top overnight to catch dawn. Remember that the temperature at the peak fluctuates greatly and cable cars may have long queues, so during peak season, go early. Based on the actual situation, when touring in a group, the worst experience is rushing through; listening to the guide is the essence. The cultural stories behind each attraction are often more memorable than photos, so ask the guide immediately if you don’t understand something.
Day 3: Yin Ruins
Gather in the morning and depart for Yin Ruins, follow the guide to visit the main attractions, allowing plenty of time for photos and rest; enjoy a local specialty lunch at noon, check into the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction introduction: This stop brings us to Yin Ruins. Yin Ruins is the site of the late Shang Dynasty capital, located in Anyang. It is the birthplace of oracle bone script and also the place where the Houmuwu Ding (formerly known as Simuwu Ding) was found. In 2006, it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site. This was once the capital of the Shang Dynasty after King Pan Geng moved the capital to Yin, lasting for over 270 years. The remains of palaces and ancestral temples, royal tombs, and chariot pits are clearly visible. Oracle bones were first discovered here, extending China's recorded history back to the Shang Dynasty. The new Yin Ruins Museum systematically displays bronzes, jades, oracle bones, and other cultural relics, providing the most direct way to understand Shang civilization. My understanding is to first see the palace and temple ruins and the chariot pits to establish a spatial concept, then enter the museum to carefully examine the artifacts. Connecting these two lines completes the experience. Oracle bone inscriptions and large bronzes are the highlights; following the guide through them is much more meaningful than just glancing around.
Tips: The mountain paths are often slippery, especially when going downhill, so pay attention to shifting your center of gravity backward and slow down your steps. Consider bringing knee protectors. Visitors commonly feedback that the oracle bones and Houmuwu Ding make history 'come alive'; they say the new museum is more worthwhile than the open-air ruins, but understanding it requires following the explanation. In practice, if you want authentic food, go deeper into the alleys, as queues at the main gate are long and the taste is average. For souvenirs, always ask for prices and compare; local supermarkets often provide more genuine items.
