Luoyang 7-Day Tour: Chongdu Valley & Longmen Grottoes
Luoyang 7-day tour covering Chongdu Valley and Longmen Grottoes and Erlitou Site. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Chongdugou
Gather in the morning and depart for Chongdugou, follow the guide to visit core attractions, and allow ample time for photos and rest; Enjoy local specialties at noon, check into the hotel in the evening, and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction introduction: Today's itinerary includes Chongdugou attractions. Chongdugou is located in Luanchuan, famous for its vast bamboo forests, waterfalls, and the agricultural charm of western Henan. It is one of the few "Jiangnan water town" style summer leisure spots. The scenic area is divided into two zones: Jinji River and Dicui River. Jinji River is famous for its clusters of waterfalls, splashing water and offering a refreshing and pleasant atmosphere; Dicui River is a continuous bamboo forest, where you can stroll through it with lush greenery. Here, you can stay in farmhouses, taste wild vegetables, and experience authentic mountain village life in western Henan. The pace is relaxed, especially suitable for family trips and summer vacations. My understanding is that slowing down the pace and not rushing to see attractions — walking through the bamboo forest or sitting by the stream is the right way to experience Chongdugou; Summer is the most comfortable, so cool you don't want to walk.
Friendly reminder: The waterside trails in the canyon are slippery, so be sure to wear non-slip river trekking shoes or sports shoes, and keep your phone and other valuables waterproof. Visitors generally report that most think Chongdugou is worth a special trip. It's recommended to slow down and follow the guide to the commentary, saving time for the most impressive details and the best camera angles. Based on actual conditions, leave some time for your energy: focus on the main activities in the morning and slow down in the afternoon to avoid overexertion on the first day and feeling exhausted in the following days.
Day 2: Longmen Grottoes
Gather in the morning and depart for Longmen Grottoes, follow the guide to visit core attractions, and allow plenty of time for photos and rest; Enjoy local specialties at noon, check into the hotel in the evening, and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction introduction: Today's itinerary includes Longmen Grottoes attractions, carved into the cliffs on both banks of the Yi River south of Luoyang city. Since Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang, construction has continued through the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang dynasties. Currently, there are over 2,300 cave niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscriptions and inscriptions. The most impressive is the Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple, standing over 17 meters tall, with a plump face and kind-looking eyes. Legend has it that it was carved after the likeness of Empress Wu Zetian and represents the pinnacle of Tang dynasty stone carving art. Along with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang, it is known as one of China's three great grottoes and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. When touring, head south along the Yi River trail from the Xishan Grottoes, where Binyang Three Caves, Ten Thousand Buddha Caves, and Lotus Cave each have highlights. Cross the bridge to the Dongshan Buddha Worship Platform for a panoramic view. My understanding is that in the morning, first visit the main cave of Xishan and admire the Big Buddha while there are fewer people; in the afternoon, go to the Dongshan Viewing Platform for the best lighting and angle; If you need to walk backward along both banks of the Yi River, a pair of comfortable shoes can save you a lot of effort.
Friendly reminder: The grotto scenic area has strong UV rays. On sunny days, bring a sun hat and sunscreen, and remember to stay hydrated since the route is long. Visitors generally report that most find the Vairocana Buddha the most breathtaking, and the best sunlight at sunset on the Western Hills; If you need to walk back along both banks of the Yi River, it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and reserve half a day. Based on actual circumstances and respecting local customs, dress appropriately when entering religious sites and do not give casual advice; a simple greeting can be met with goodwill.
Day 3: Erlitou
Gather in the morning and depart for Erlitou, follow the guide to visit core attractions, and allow enough time for photos and rest; Enjoy local specialties at noon, check into the hotel in the evening, and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Erlitou. The Erlitou site is located in Luoyang Yanshi and is acclaimed by scholars as the "Earliest China." It is a large capital site from the mid to late Xia Dynasty, unearthing turquoise dragon-shaped artifacts, bronze jue vessels, bronze tripods, and other heavy artifacts, revealing the appearance of China's first royal capital. The turquoise dragon-shaped artifact is made from over 2,000 turquoise shards embedded and is known as the "Number One Dragon of Huaxia," serving as an important testament to Chinese dragon worship. The Erlitou Site Museum presents the archaeological atmosphere and is an unmissable stop for exploring the origins of Chinese civilization. My understanding is that before visiting, one should first understand the academic controversies surrounding the "Xia Capital," then look at the exhibits for a deeper understanding; The museum's exhibits are carefully crafted and worth a leisurely visit.
Friendly reminder: The mountain roads are slippery, so when going downhill, pay special attention to shifting your center of gravity and slowing down. You may need a pair of knee pads. Visitors generally report that Erlitou is worth a special trip. It's recommended to slow down and follow the guide to listen to the explanation, saving time for the most impressive details and the best camera angles. Considering actual conditions, the biggest fear of joining a tour is skimming the skies; listening to the explanation is the essence. The cultural stories behind each attraction are often more memorable than photos. If you don't understand, ask the guide on the spot.
