Luoyang 7-Day Tour: White Horse Temple & Chongdu Valley
Luoyang 7-day tour covering White Horse Temple and Chongdu Valley and Laojun Mountain. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: White Horse Temple
Gather in the morning and depart for White Horse Temple, follow the guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for taking photos and resting; enjoy local specialty cuisine at noon, check in to the hotel in the evening, and rest up to prepare for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: A highlight arranged in the itinerary is White Horse Temple. White Horse Temple is located in the eastern part of Luoyang city. It was first built during the Yongping period of the Eastern Han Dynasty to commemorate the White Horse carrying scriptures and the initial spread of Buddhism to the Central Plains. It is honored as "China's First Ancient Temple" and is the first government-built temple following the introduction of Buddhism to China. Inside the temple, the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, Great Buddha Hall, and Heavenly King Hall are laid out along the central axis, with incense burning between red walls and green cypresses for more than two thousand years. Notably, the temple also houses foreign-style halls donated by countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, and India, showcasing a unique scene of the eastward spread and return of Buddhist culture. My understanding is to first visit the main halls along the central axis, then circle around to the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, and finally go to the side foreign-style halls to experience cultural fusion; visiting in the early morning when there are fewer people, with sunlight on the red walls and ancient cypresses, is the most scenic and also helps avoid travel group peaks.
Tips: There are many incense stalls around the temple, so buy incense as needed and spend rationally. Visitors generally report that the foreign-style halls (Thai/Myanmar/Indian courtyards) are highly photogenic and usually feel more spacious than expected; note that the international temple area requires quite a bit of walking, so save some energy. Considering actual circumstances, keep your documents and wallet separated, take photos of important documents and store them on your phone as backup, so if lost, you can quickly replace them without affecting your itinerary.
Day 2: Chongdugou
Gather in the morning and depart for Chongdugou, follow the guide to visit the main attractions, leaving plenty of time for taking photos and resting; have a local specialty lunch at noon, check in to the hotel in the evening, and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Chongdugou attractions. Chongdugou is located in Luanchuan and is famous for its vast bamboo forests, cascading waterfalls, and Henan western rural farming charm. It is a rare 'Jiangnan water town'-style summer resort in Henan. The scenic area is divided into two sections, Jinji River and Dicu River. Jinji River is known for its group of waterfalls, with splashing water and refreshing coolness; Dicu River is a continuous bamboo forest, where walking amidst it offers endless greenery. Here, you can stay in farmhouses, try wild mountain vegetables, and experience authentic western Henan village life, with a relaxed pace, ideal for slow family tours and summer vacations. My understanding is, slow down the pace, don't rush to see all the attractions—in the bamboo forest take a walk, by the stream take a seat; that's the proper way to enjoy Chongdugou. Visiting in summer is the most comfortable, so cool you'll not want to leave.
Tips: Water sections in the canyon are slippery, make sure to wear non-slip water trekking shoes or sports shoes, and waterproof valuable items like your phone. According to general visitor feedback, most tourists consider Chongdugou worth a special trip; it is recommended to slow down, follow the guide's explanations, and leave time for the details that touch you most and the spots with the best photo opportunities. Depending on the situation, carry some small change and snacks with you; they can be useful if the signal is poor or for emergency supplies, don't wait to get hungry before looking for them.
Day 3: Laojun Mountain
Gather in the morning and depart for Laojun Mountain, following the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing plenty of time for photos and rest; enjoy local specialty cuisine at noon, and check into the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Laojun Mountain attractions. Laojun Mountain is located in Luoyang Luanchuan County, and it is the main peak of the Funiu Mountains as well as a famous Taoist mountain, traditionally considered the place where Laozi, the founder of Taoism, retreated and cultivated. The Jin Ding Taoist temple complex stands atop a peak more than two thousand meters above sea level. The temple features golden roofs and red walls, surrounded by a sea of clouds, and is renowned for the saying, 'Travel far to witness the stunning beauty of the human world.' The Ten-Mile Screen is the highlight of the entire route, a high-altitude plank road suspended on a cliff that offers constantly changing scenery, providing panoramic views of the peaks, sea of clouds, and sunrise. Visitors can ascend the mountain via a two-stage cable car. On clear days, reaching the summit offers views of the sea of clouds and sunrise, while in winter it becomes a popular snow-viewing destination in the Central Plains. My understanding is that it is essential to take the cable car early to secure the best lighting at Jin Ding and the Ten-Mile Screen; the summit is windy and cold, so a windbreaker and thermos are standard essentials, and if you are afraid of heights, avoid the glass observation deck.
Tips: The temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountain area is significant, and the wind at the summit is strong, so a windproof jacket and warm layers are necessary. Tourists generally report that the sea of clouds and sunrise at Jin Ding are the major highlights, and many people specifically stay at the summit to watch the dawn; note that the temperature at the summit varies greatly and the cable car line can be long, so in peak season, it's essential to go early. Given the changing mountain weather, a windproof jacket is more practical than anything else; shoes must be non-slip and comfortable—it's better to take fewer photos than sprain an ankle.
