Zhengzhou 7-Day Tour: Baiyun Mountain & Chongdu Valley
Zhengzhou 7-day tour covering Baiyun Mountain and Chongdu Valley and Longmen Grottoes. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Baiyun Mountain
Assemble in the morning and depart for Baiyun Mountain, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for taking photos and resting; enjoy a local specialty meal at noon, and check in to the hotel in the evening to rest and prepare for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Baiyun Mountain attractions. Baiyun Mountain is located in the heart of Funiu Mountains in Song County. From Yuhuang Peak, you can view the sea of clouds at sunrise. The area has a high forest coverage and abundant negative oxygen ions, making it a natural oxygen bar. Within the scenic area, Jiulong Waterfall and the Highland Peony Garden each have their own features. It is a rare high-altitude resort area for summer cooling and autumn leaf viewing. Cable cars or scenic shuttle buses can connect different spots. The mountaintop offers open views and misty scenery, like a fairyland. In my understanding, summer is the best time to come for cooling; the mountain's coolness contrasts sharply with the city’s heat. Getting up early to climb Yuhuang Peak to see the sunrise over the sea of clouds requires some luck, but even if you miss the sunrise, the mountains in the morning mist are beautiful enough.
Warm Tips: There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains, and the mountaintop can be windy, so a windproof jacket and warm inner layers are necessary. Visitors generally report that most tourists believe Baiyun Mountain is worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide’s explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best spots for photos. In practice, be punctual, arrive five to ten minutes before assembly, as it's better for people to wait for the vehicle than the vehicle for people; don’t make everyone wait for you.
Day 2: Chongdugou
Gather in the morning and depart for Chongdugou, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, leaving plenty of time for photos and rest; have a local specialty lunch at noon, and check into the hotel in the evening to rest and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes the Chongdugou attraction. Chongdugou is located in Luanchuan, known for its vast bamboo forests, waterfalls and streams, and western Henan farming culture. It is one of the few places in Henan that offers a “Waterside Jiangnan” style summer retreat. The scenic area is divided into two sections: Jinji River and Dicui River. Jinji River is famous for its waterfalls, with splashing water that is cool and refreshing; Dicui River has continuous bamboo forests, with lush greenery all around. Here, you can stay at a farmhouse, try wild mountain vegetables, and experience the authentic rural life of western Henan. The pace is leisurely, making it especially suitable for family slow travel and summer vacation. My understanding is to slow down, don’t rush to see attractions—walking in the bamboo forest and sitting by the stream is the proper way to enjoy Chongdugou; visiting in summer is the most comfortable, so refreshing that you won’t want to leave.
Tips: Signal may be poor in the canyon, so arrange meeting points with the tour guide in advance and do not act alone. Visitors generally feedback that most tourists think Chongdugou is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide for explanations, and leave time for the details that touch you the most and the best photo spots. Depending on actual conditions, when taking photos, don’t focus only on the shots; pay attention to your feet and surrounding environment, and make sure to stand firmly on viewing platforms and along the edges of walkways.
Day 3: Longmen Grottoes
Assemble in the morning and depart for Longmen Grottoes. Follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, leaving plenty of time for photos and rest; enjoy a local specialty lunch at noon, check in to the hotel in the evening, and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Longmen Grottoes attractions. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliff walls along both sides of the Yi River in the southern part of Luoyang. Its construction continued from the time Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang and spanned multiple dynasties including the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. Currently, there are more than 2,300 niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 engraved inscriptions. The most impressive is the Giant Buddha of Fengxian Temple, Luoheshna, which is over 17 meters tall, with a full face and eyes full of kindness. It is said to have been carved to resemble Empress Wu Zetian and represents the pinnacle of Tang Dynasty stone carving art. Along with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang Grottoes, it is known as one of China's three major grottoes and is also a World Cultural Heritage site. During the visit, start from the West Mountain Grottoes along the Yi River walkway heading south; Binyang Three Caves, Wanfo Cave, and Lotus Cave each have interesting features. After crossing the bridge to the East Mountain Worship Terrace, you can overlook the full panorama. My suggestion is to first visit the main caves of West Mountain in the morning to enjoy the Giant Buddha with fewer crowds, and in the afternoon go to the East Mountain to view the scenery from afar, where the lighting and angles are best for photos; walking along both sides of the Yi River involves some backtracking, so comfortable shoes will save a lot of effort.
Tips: Visiting the grottoes mainly involves walking and stairs, so it is recommended to wear non-slip, comfortable shoes and travel light. Be mindful of your footing along both sides of the Yi River. Visitors generally report that the Giant Buddha is the most impressive, and the sunset at West Mountain offers the best photo lighting; walking along both sides of the Yi River involves backtracking, so wear comfortable shoes and allow at least half a day. Based on actual conditions, the best times for photography are morning or evening—there are fewer people and softer light in the early morning, golden light in the late afternoon is ideal, while noon has harsh lighting and more crowds, making it better to rest at that time.
