Highlights
Day 1: Sui-Tang Luoyang City
Assemble in the morning and depart for Sui-Tang Luoyang City, following the guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for taking photos and resting; at noon, enjoy local specialty meals, and in the evening, check into the hotel to recharge for the itinerary the next day.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Sui-Tang Luoyang City attractions. The Sui-Tang Luoyang City National Heritage Park centers around Yingtian Gate, Mingtang, and Tiantang, recreating the palace grandeur of the prosperous Tang "Divine Capital" Luoyang. Yingtian Gate is the south gate of Sui-Tang Luoyang City, grand and majestic; climbing the tower allows a view of the central axis, and at night, there is a spectacular light show. Mingtang was the "Palace of Ten Thousand Phenomena" during Empress Wu Zetian's era, and Tiantang is a tall tower for Buddhist ceremonies. The interiors of both buildings restore the luxurious furnishings of the Tang dynasty palace. It is also pleasant to stroll along Jiuzhou Pool, imagining the grandeur of the royal gardens of the past. This place is closely related to TV series such as "Wu Zetian" and "The Wind Rises in Luoyang," and has become one of the most popular Tang culture check-in spots in Luoyang in recent years. My understanding is that it is a must to visit at night—the lights of Yingtian Gate and Mingtang Tiantang in the early evening show what the "Divine Capital" truly looks like; see the palace furnishings by day, and enjoy the light show at night—two experiences in one day.
Tips: Popular landmarks in the ancient capital attract large crowds on holidays, so try to avoid peak times or book tickets in advance. Visitors generally report that most tourists feel Sui-Tang Luoyang City is worth visiting specifically. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide's explanations, and save time for the details that move you the most and the most photogenic spots. Depending on the situation, the best time for photos is early morning or late afternoon—the morning light is soft and there are fewer people, the golden glow at dusk is ideal, while midday lighting is harsh and crowded; it is more worthwhile to rest during this time.
Day 2: Longmen Grottoes
Gather in the morning and depart for Longmen Grottoes, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing plenty of time for photos and rest; at noon, enjoy a local specialty meal, and in the evening check into the hotel to rest and recharge for the next day’s itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Longmen Grottoes attractions. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliff walls along both sides of the Yi River in the southern part of Luoyang. Its construction continued from the time Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang and spanned multiple dynasties including the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. Currently, there are more than 2,300 niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 engraved inscriptions. The most impressive is the Giant Buddha of Fengxian Temple, Luoheshna, which is over 17 meters tall, with a full face and eyes full of kindness. It is said to have been carved to resemble Empress Wu Zetian and represents the peak of Tang Dynasty stone carving art. Along with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang, it is known as one of China’s three major grottoes and is also a World Cultural Heritage site. During the visit, start from the Western Hills grottoes along the Yi River walkway heading south. Bin Yang Three Caves, Wan Fo Cave, and Lotus Cave each have their highlights. Cross the bridge to the Eastern Hills Worship Terrace for a panoramic view. My understanding is that in the morning, visit the main grottoes of the Western Hills and savor the Giant Buddha when there are fewer people, and in the afternoon, go to the Eastern Hills terrace for a distant view—the lighting and angles are perfect for photos. Walking along both sides of the Yi River requires returning along the same path, so a pair of comfortable shoes will save a lot of effort.
Warm Tips: The grottoes are mostly built on cliffs, so maintain a distance from the cliff and hold onto railings, taking care of the elderly and children. Visitors generally report that most find the Luoheshna Giant Buddha the most impressive, the Western Hills at sunset provides the best lighting for photos; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so comfortable shoes and reserving half a day are recommended. Regarding actual conditions, long journeys can easily cause dehydration, so carry a water bottle and drink small amounts frequently; on the first night in highlands or mountainous areas, avoid washing hair or bathing for too long to give your body time to adjust.
Day 3: Yin Ruins
Assemble in the morning and depart for Yin Ruins, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for taking photos and resting; enjoy local specialty dishes at noon, check in at the hotel in the evening, and replenish energy to prepare for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: This stop is Yin Ruins. Yin Ruins is the site of the late Shang Dynasty capital, located in Anyang. It is the birthplace of oracle bone script and the discovery site of the Houmuwu Ding (formerly known as Simuwu Ding). In 2006, it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site. It once served as the Shang Dynasty capital after King Pan Geng moved to Yin, lasting over 270 years. The remains of palaces and temples, royal tombs, and chariot and horse pits are clearly visible. Oracle bones were first discovered here, raising the starting point of Chinese historical records to the Shang Dynasty. The new museum building of Yin Ruins systematically displays bronzes, jade artifacts, oracle bones, and other cultural relics, serving as the most direct classroom for understanding Shang civilization. My understanding is that first seeing the palace and temple remains and chariot pits establishes a spatial concept, then entering the museum to closely examine the artifacts; connecting these two lines makes the experience complete. Oracle bones and large bronze vessels are the essence, and following the guide to go through them is far better than a cursory glance.
Tips: The hiking sections have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. Those with difficulty walking are advised to use the cable car. Visitors generally feel that the oracle bones and the Simuwu Ding make history 'come alive,' and many say the new museum building is more worthwhile than the open-air ruins; to understand it, follow the explanation. Considering the actual situation, be punctual: arrive at the meeting point five to ten minutes early. It is better for people to wait for the vehicle than for the vehicle to wait for people—don’t make everyone wait for you.
Day 4: Departure
Take a dedicated car to the station or airport according to your flight or train schedule. Conclude a pleasant journey and return home full of memories.
Warm tips: On the day of return, be sure to double-check your flight or train time and leave early to allow enough buffer. Before checking out, inspect the room once more to ensure nothing is left behind. Tourists generally report that many buy some souvenirs in advance for their return trip, so it is recommended to purchase them from reputable stores and keep the receipts to avoid last-minute rush. In practical terms, in mountainous areas, the weather can change suddenly, so a windproof jacket is more reliable than anything else. As for shoes, be sure to choose anti-slip and comfortable ones; it’s better to take a few fewer photos than to twist your ankle.
