Zhengzhou 4-day tour covering Chongdu Valley and Laojun Mountain and Longmen Grottoes. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Chongdugou
Assemble in the morning and depart for Chongdugou, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, leaving plenty of time for photos and rest; enjoy local specialty dishes at noon, and check into the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction introduction: Today’s itinerary includes the Chongdugou attraction, Chongdugou is located in Luanchuan, known for its vast bamboo forests, cascading waterfalls, and western Henan farming scenery. It is one of the few 'Jiangnan water town' style summer resorts in Henan. The scenic area is divided into two parts: Jinji River and Dicui River. Jinji River is famous for its waterfalls, with splashing water and a refreshing atmosphere; Dicui River features continuous bamboo forests, offering an expanse of greenery when strolling through. Here, visitors can stay in farmhouse accommodations, try mountain vegetables, and experience authentic western Henan village life. The pace is relaxed, especially suitable for family slow travel and summer vacations. My understanding is to slow down, don’t rush through the attractions—walking in the bamboo forest and sitting by the stream is the proper way to enjoy Chongdugou; summer visits are the most comfortable, with the coolness making you reluctant to leave.
Warm tips: Signal may be poor in the canyon, so arrange meeting points in advance with the guide and avoid wandering alone. Tourists generally report that most visitors think Chongdugou is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide’s commentary, and reserve time for the details that move you the most and the best spots for photos. According to the situation, keep your documents and wallet separate, and photograph important documents for a backup on your phone, so in the event of loss, you can quickly replace them without delaying your trip.
Day 2: Laojun Mountain
Assemble in the morning and depart for Laojun Mountain, follow the guide to visit the main attractions, allowing plenty of time for taking photos and relaxing; have lunch featuring local specialties, check into the hotel in the evening to rest and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes the Laojun Mountain attraction, Laojun Mountain is located in Luoyang Luanchuan County, and it is the main peak of the Funiu Mountains as well as a famous Taoist mountain. It is said to be the place where the Taoist founder Laozi retired to cultivate. The Jin Ding Taoist temple complex stands atop a peak over two thousand meters above sea level, with golden tiles and red walls, surrounded by sea-like clouds, and is famously praised as "traveling far for a breathtaking feast, to witness the splendor of the world." The Shili Huaping (Ten-Mile Painted Screen) is the highlight of the trip, a high-altitude walkway suspended along a cliff providing constantly changing views, capturing the peak forest, sea of clouds, and sunrise all at once. You can take a two-stage cable car up the mountain; on clear days, you can see the sunrise over the sea of clouds from the top, and in winter, it is a very popular place for snow viewing in the Central Plains. My understanding is that it is essential to take the cable car early to secure good light for the Jin Ding and Shili Huaping; it is windy and cold at the top, so a windproof jacket and a thermos are must-haves. If you are afraid, the glass observation deck is not recommended.
Tips: The mountain paths have many stairs and steep slopes, so make sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. People with limited mobility are recommended to use the cable car for ascent and descent. Visitors generally say that the sea of clouds and sunrise from Jin Ding are the main highlights, and many people specifically stay on the mountain overnight to see dawn. Note that there is a large temperature difference at the top and long lines for the cable car, so be sure to go early during peak season. Depending on the situation, carry some small change and packaged snacks with you, as signal may be poor or supplies may be temporarily unavailable; don't wait until you are hungry to look for food.
Day 3: Longmen Grottoes
Assemble in the morning and depart for Longmen Grottoes. Follow the tour guide to visit the core attractions, allowing ample time for photos and breaks; at noon, enjoy local specialty cuisine, and in the evening, check into the hotel to rest and prepare for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Longmen Grottoes attractions. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliff walls along the south bank of the Yi River in Luoyang. Since Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang, its construction continued through the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, and several other dynasties. Currently, there are over 2,300 niches, more than 100,000 statues, and over 2,800 engraved inscriptions and steles. The most astonishing is the Vairocana Buddha of Fengxian Temple, which is over 17 meters tall, with a plump face and compassionate eyes, said to have been modeled after Empress Wu Zetian, representing the pinnacle of Tang dynasty stone carving art. Together with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Yungang in Datong, it is considered one of China's three great grottoes and is also a World Heritage site. During the visit, walk south along the Yi River trail from the West Mountain Grottoes; Bin Yang's Three Caves, Ten Thousand Buddha Cave, and Lotus Cave each have their highlights. Crossing the bridge to the East Mountain worship platform offers a panoramic view. My understanding is to first visit the main West Mountain grotto in the morning, when fewer people are around, to fully appreciate the Great Buddha, and in the afternoon, go to the East Mountain for a distant view from the platform, which offers the best lighting and angles for photos. Walking along both banks of the Yi River requires backtracking, so a pair of comfortable shoes can save a lot of effort.
Tips: UV rays are strong in the grotto area, so on sunny days, bring a sunhat and sunscreen. The visit route is long, so remember to stay hydrated. Most tourists report that the Vairocana Buddha is the most impressive, the West Mountain at sunset has the best light for photography, and walking along the Yi River requires backtracking, so comfortable shoes and half a day of free time are recommended. Considering the actual situation, the weather in the mountains can change quickly, so a windproof jacket is essential. Shoes must be non-slip and comfortable; it’s better to take fewer photos than to injure your ankle.
