Xinxiang 4-Day Tour: Henan Museum & Taihang Grand Canyon
Xinxiang 4-day tour covering Henan Museum and Taihang Grand Canyon and Yin Xu. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Henan Museum
Gather in the morning and depart for Henan Museum. Follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, leaving plenty of time for photos and rest; enjoy local specialty dishes for lunch, and check into the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day’s itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: This stop is Henan Museum. Henan Museum is a landmark of Central Plains civilization, with a collection of over 170,000 cultural relics, systematically presenting “Early China” along the main theme of “Magnificent China, Choosing the Center for the Capital.” Among the museum’s treasures, the Jiahu bone flute is the earliest playable musical instrument discovered to date, rewriting the history of Chinese music; the Duling square ding and cloud-patterned bronze vessel represent the pinnacle of Shang and Zhou bronze casting; the Lady Hao owl-shaped zun impressively tells the legend of Lady Hao, wife of King Wu Ding of Shang; additionally, there are national treasures such as the lotus crane square vase and the gold inscription of Empress Wu Zetian. It is recommended to follow a guided tour or rent an audio guide. Two hours is enough to get a comprehensive view of the main thread of Chinese civilization. My understanding is to first head straight for a few key treasures to enjoy them, then follow the chronological order to tour systematically, focusing on the main line for maximum efficiency; it is normal to see crowds in front of the national treasures, so knowing the display locations of the key treasures in advance and going straight to them saves time.
Tips: Flash photography is prohibited, please do not touch the exhibits, and stay quiet while following the guide. Visitors generally feel that Henan Museum is worth making a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo opportunities. Depending on the circumstances, the best times for photography are early morning or late afternoon—fewer people and soft light in the morning, golden glow at dusk, while midday light is harsh and crowded, making it better for rest.
Day 2: Taihang Grand Canyon
Assemble in the morning and depart for Taihang Grand Canyon. Follow the guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for photos and rest; enjoy local specialty cuisine at noon, and check into the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: This stop is Taihang Grand Canyon. Taihang Grand Canyon spans the border of Shanxi, Hebei, and Henan, with Red Flag Canal passing through the mountains. Taohuagu Valley, Wangxiang Rock, and Taihang Sky Road connect grandeur and beauty, representing the concentrated display of Taihang scenery. Taohuagu Valley is known for its waterfalls and streams, Wangxiang Rock is famous for its cliffside walkways, and Taihang Sky Road allows visitors to take sightseeing buses for panoramic views of the canyon. Spring brings blooming flowers, autumn brings colorful forests, and each season has its highlights. In my understanding, the scenic area is large with scattered attractions, so it's important to plan your route and prioritize core attractions; hold the railings on steep walkways, and friends who are afraid of heights should proceed according to their ability.
Warm Tips: Signal may be poor inside the canyon, so arrange a meeting point with the guide in advance and avoid going alone. Visitors generally report that the water scenery in Taohuagu Valley is serene and the Taihang Sky Road is steep, with a scenic view at every step. Be sure to take the sightseeing bus, as weather can greatly affect the experience. Considering practical situations, dehydration is the biggest risk on long trips, so carry a water bottle and drink small amounts frequently; on the first night in a highland or mountainous area, avoid washing your hair or taking long showers to give your body some time to adjust.
Day 3: Yin Ruins
Assemble in the morning and depart for Yin Ruins, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for taking photos and resting; enjoy local specialty dishes at noon, check in at the hotel in the evening, and recharge to prepare for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: This stop is Yin Ruins. Yin Ruins is the site of the late Shang Dynasty capital, located in Anyang. It is the birthplace of oracle bones and also the origin of the Houmuwu Ding (formerly known as Simuwu Ding). In 2006, it was included in the World Cultural Heritage list. This was once the capital city after King Pan Geng of the Shang Dynasty moved to Yin, lasting more than 270 years. The remains of palaces and temples, royal tombs area, and chariot and horse pits are clearly visible. Oracle bones were first discovered here, dating China’s recorded history back to the Shang Dynasty. The new museum of Yin Ruins systematically displays bronzes, jade, and oracle bones, providing the most direct way to understand Shang civilization. My understanding is to first look at the palace and temple ruins and the chariot and horse pits to establish a spatial concept, then go into the museum to examine the artifacts closely; connecting these two lines completes the experience. The oracle bones and large bronzes are highlights, and following the guided explanations is far better than just browsing.
Tips: There are many steps and steep slopes on the hiking sections, so be sure to wear non-slip athletic shoes. Those who have difficulty walking are recommended to take the cable car up and down. Tourists generally feedback that the oracle bones and the Simuwu Ding make history 'come alive.' Visitors say the new museum is more worthwhile than the open-air ruins; remember to follow the guide to understand it. Based on the actual situation, manage your time well and arrive 5 to 10 minutes early for assembly—it is better for people to wait for the vehicle than for the vehicle to wait for people, so don’t make everyone wait for you.
