Day 1: Longmen Grottoes

Gather in the morning and depart for Longmen Grottoes. Follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, leaving ample time for photography and rest; enjoy a local specialty meal at noon, and check in to the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day's itinerary.

Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Longmen Grottoes attractions. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliffs along both sides of the Yi River in the southern part of Luoyang. Construction began after Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty moved the capital to Luoyang, continuing through multiple dynasties including Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. Currently, there are more than 2,300 cave niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscribed steles. The most stunning is the Vairocana Buddha in Fengxian Temple, which is over seventeen meters tall, with a full face and compassionate eyes, said to be modeled after Empress Wu Zetian. It represents the pinnacle of stone carving art during the High Tang period. Along with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Yungang in Datong, it is considered one of China's three major grottoes and is a World Cultural Heritage site. During the visit, walk south along the Yi River from the West Mountain Grottoes, with each of Binyang Three Caves, Wanfo Cave, and Lotus Cave offering highlights. Cross the bridge to East Mountain Worship Terrace for a panoramic view. My understanding is to first visit the main caves in the West Mountain in the morning, enjoy the Buddha with fewer crowds, and in the afternoon go to the East Mountain terrace for distant viewing, where lighting and angles are best for photography; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so a pair of comfortable shoes can save a lot of effort.

Friendly Tips: Many grottoes are built along cliffs, so keep a safe distance from the cliffs and hold onto railings while viewing, and take care of the elderly and children. Tourists generally report that most find the Vairocana Buddha the most impressive, and the West Mountain sunset is the best for photography. Walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so comfortable shoes are recommended, and plan for half a day. Based on the actual situation, don’t rush with shopping; if you see a 'limited-time offer,' take three minutes to think. If you really want souvenirs, make sure to choose authorized stores and keep receipts for peace of mind.

Day 2: Sui-Tang Luoyang City

Assemble in the morning and depart for Sui-Tang Luoyang City, follow the tour guide to visit the key attractions, allowing ample time for photography and rest; at noon, enjoy local specialty meals, and in the evening, check in to the hotel to recharge for the next day's itinerary.

Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Sui-Tang Luoyang City attractions. The Sui-Tang Luoyang City National Heritage Park, centered on Ying Tian Gate, Ming Tang, and Tian Tang, restores the palace grandeur of the flourishing Tang dynasty 'Divine Capital' Luoyang. Ying Tian Gate is the main south gate of Sui-Tang Luoyang City, magnificent in scale; from the tower, you can overlook the central axis, and there is a stunning light show at night. Ming Tang was the 'Palace of Ten Thousand Phenomena' during Wu Zetian's era, while Tian Tang is a lofty tower for worshipping Buddha. The interiors of both buildings have been restored to the lavish furnishings of the Tang dynasty court. Taking a stroll along Jiuzhou Pool is also recommended, evoking the grandeur of the royal gardens of the past. This site is closely associated with film and TV productions such as 'Wu Zetian' and 'Feng Qi Luoyang', and in recent years, it has become one of the most popular Tang culture check-in spots. My understanding is that a night visit is a must—the lights of Ying Tian Gate and Ming Tang Tian Tang after dusk truly reflect what the 'Divine Capital' should look like; visit the palace interiors during the day, and enjoy the light show at night for two distinct experiences in one day.

Tips: The ancient city attractions are dispersed, requiring a fair amount of walking and transfers, so it is recommended to wear comfortable flat shoes and plan your route well. Tourists generally feedback that most visitors find Sui-Tang Luoyang City worth a dedicated visit. It is advisable to slow down, follow the guide's explanation, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. In practical terms, keep your ID and wallet separate, and photograph important documents for a phone backup. In case of loss, you can quickly replace them without affecting your itinerary.

Day 3: Laojun Mountain

Gather in the morning and depart for Laojun Mountain. Follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, leaving plenty of time for taking photos and resting; enjoy a local specialty meal at noon, and check into the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day's itinerary.

Attraction introduction: Today's itinerary includes the Laojun Mountain attraction. Laojun Mountain is located in Luoyang, Luanchuan County. It is the main peak of the Funiu Mountains and a famous Taoist mountain, traditionally believed to be the place where the founder of Taoism, Laozi, retired and practiced. The group of temples on the Golden Summit stands atop a peak over 2,000 meters above sea level. With golden tiled roofs, red walls, and rolling clouds, it is renowned as "a stunning feast of appearances in the human world." The Ten-Mile Painted Screen is the highlight of the journey; a high-altitude walkway suspended on a cliff offers changing views, revealing the peak forests, sea of clouds, and sunrise. You can take a two-stage cable car up the mountain. On clear days, you can watch the sea of clouds and sunrise from the top, while in winter, it is a popular spot in the Central Plains for snow viewing. My understanding is that it is essential to take the cable car early to secure the best light at the Golden Summit and the Ten-Mile Painted Screen; it is windy and cold at the top, so a windbreaker and thermos are a must, and if you are afraid of heights, don't force yourself on the glass viewing platform.

Tips: The temperature in mountain areas varies greatly between morning and evening, and it is windy at the summit, so a windproof jacket and warm inner layers are necessary. Visitors generally agree that the sea of clouds and sunrise at the Golden Summit are the main highlights, and many stay on the summit overnight to catch dawn. Be aware that temperature differences are significant, and queues for the cable car can be long, so arrive early during peak season. Based on actual conditions, carry some small change and small snacks; this can be useful for poor signal areas or temporary supplies. Don't wait until you are hungry to look for food.
