Luoyang 6-Day Tour: Laojun Mountain & Baiyun Mountain
Luoyang 6-day tour covering Laojun Mountain and Baiyun Mountain and Longmen Grottoes. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Laojun Mountain
Gather in the morning and depart for Laojun Mountain, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, leaving plenty of time for taking photos and resting; at noon, enjoy local specialty meals, and in the evening, check into the hotel to recharge for the itinerary the next day.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Laojun Mountain attractions. Laojun Mountain is located in Luoyang, Luanchuan County. It is the main peak of the Funiu Mountains and a famous Taoist mountain, traditionally known as the place where the Taoist founder Laozi retreated for cultivation. The Jin Ding Temple complex stands on a peak over two thousand meters above sea level, with golden temple tiles and red walls amidst rolling clouds, earning a reputation of "a breathtaking feast on Earth, a glimpse of the world's grandeur." The Ten-Mile Painted Screen is the highlight of the trip, a high-altitude plank road on the cliff offering ever-changing views, capturing forests of peaks, sea of clouds, and sunrises. Visitors can ascend by a two-stage cable car. On clear days, the summit provides a view of the sunrise over the sea of clouds; in winter, it is a highly popular spot for snow viewing in Central China. My advice is to get an early cable car to the top to secure the best light for the Jin Ding and Ten-Mile Painted Screen; the summit is windy and cold, so a windproof jacket and thermos are essential, and cautious visitors may want to avoid the glass observation deck.
Tips: The mountain trails are often slippery, especially downhill, so keep your center of gravity back and slow your pace; knee pads can be prepared. Visitors generally report that the sea of clouds and sunrise at Jin Ding are considered the main highlights, with many staying at the summit overnight for dawn. Keep in mind that the summit has large temperature differences and cable car queues can be long, so getting up early in peak season is essential. In long trips, dehydration is the biggest concern, so keep a water bottle handy and drink small amounts frequently. On the first night in the plateau or mountainous areas, avoid washing your hair or bathing for too long to allow your body time to adapt.
Day 2: Baiyun Mountain
Gather in the morning and depart for Baiyun Mountain, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, and allow plenty of time for photography and rest; at noon, enjoy local specialty meals, and in the evening, check into the hotel to recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Baiyun Mountain attractions. Baiyun Mountain is located in the Funiu Mountains of Song County. From Yuhuang Peak, you can view the sea of clouds at sunrise. The area has a high forest coverage and abundant negative oxygen ions, making it a natural oxygen bar. Within the scenic area, Jiulong Waterfall and the Highland Peony Garden each have their own characteristics. It is ideal for summer cooling and autumn leaf viewing, being one of the few high-altitude resort-type scenic areas in Henan. You can connect various points via cable car or scenic shuttle bus. The mountaintop offers a broad view and misty clouds, resembling a fairyland. My understanding is that visiting in summer for cooling is most worthwhile; the coolness in the mountains contrasts sharply with the city heat. Early rising to climb Yuhuang Peak for the sea of clouds at sunrise requires some luck, but even if you miss the sunrise, the mountain scenery in the morning mist is beautiful enough.
Friendly Tips: Climbing sections have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. For those with difficulty walking, taking the cable car up and down is recommended. Tourists generally report that most visitors think Baiyun Mountain is worth traveling to specifically. It is suggested to slow your pace, listen to the guide’s commentary, and reserve time for the details that move you the most and the best spots for photos. According to the actual situation, be punctual and arrive five to ten minutes early for assembly; it's better for people to wait for the vehicle than for the vehicle to wait for one person, so don’t make everyone wait for you.
Day 3: Longmen Grottoes
Assemble in the morning and depart for Longmen Grottoes. Follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, leaving ample time for photography and rest; enjoy a local specialty meal at noon, and check in to the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes the Longmen Grottoes attraction. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliffs along both sides of the Yi River in the southern part of Luoyang city. Construction began after Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang and continued through the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, and several other dynasties. There are now over 2,300 cave niches, more than 100,000 statues, and over 2,800 engraved inscriptions remaining. The most spectacular is the Vairocana Buddha in the Fengxian Temple, which is over 17 meters tall, with a full face and compassionate eyes. It is said to have been carved based on the appearance of Empress Wu Zetian and represents the pinnacle of Tang Dynasty stone carving art. Along with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang, it is one of China's three major grottoes and is also a World Cultural Heritage site. During the visit, walk south along the Yi River trail from the West Mountain Grottoes; Bin Yang's Three Caves, Ten Thousand Buddha Cave, and Lotus Cave each have their own highlights. Cross the bridge to the East Mountain Worship Terrace for a panoramic view. My suggestion is to visit the main West Mountain caves in the morning to appreciate the Vairocana Buddha when there are fewer people, and then go to the East Mountain terrace in the afternoon for distant views, as the lighting and angles are best for photos. Since the trails along both sides of the Yi River require retracing your steps, a pair of comfortable shoes can save a lot of effort.
Tips: The grotto area has strong UV rays, so bring a sun hat and sunscreen on sunny days. The walking route is long, so remember to stay hydrated. Visitor feedback generally indicates that most people find the Vairocana Buddha the most impressive, the West Mountain is most photogenic at sunset, and the trails along both sides of the Yi River require backtracking. Comfortable shoes and reserving half a day are recommended. Based on actual conditions, when taking photos, do not focus only on the shot; pay attention to your feet and surroundings, and be sure to stand securely at viewing platforms and edges of walkways.
