Day 1: Shaolin Temple

Gather in the morning and depart for Shaolin Temple, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing plenty of time for photos and rest; enjoy local specialty cuisine at noon, and check into the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day's itinerary.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Shaolin Temple, which is located at the foot of Wuru Peak on Shaoshi Mountain in Dengfeng Mount Song. It was first built in the 19th year of the Taihe era of the Northern Wei Dynasty (495 AD), serving both as the ancestral home of Zen Buddhism and the birthplace of Shaolin martial arts, with a history of over 1,500 years. The main points of interest are concentrated in three areas: Changzhu Courtyard along the central axis features, in sequence, the Mountain Gate, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Great Hero Hall, Sutra Library, and Lixue Pavilion, with halls and ancient steles laid out along the way; the Pagoda Forest is the largest existing ancient pagoda complex in China, with over 200 brick-and-stone tomb pagodas from the Tang, Song, to Qing dynasties, each corresponding to a high-ranking monk; the Damo Cave on Wuru Peak is said to be the place where Bodhidharma meditated facing the wall for nine years. The Martial Arts Hall performs Shaolin martial arts demonstrations daily at scheduled times, showcasing authentic skills in fist techniques, weapons, and hard qigong. My understanding is: first walk through the central axis with the guide, then explore the details freely; in the Pagoda Forest, please stay quiet and circle the pagodas; enter the martial arts performance 15 minutes early to get good seats.

Tips: Please keep quiet and dress neatly when entering the temple. Generally, photography is not allowed inside the halls, and ritual objects should not be touched; donations are welcomed at one’s discretion. Visitors generally report that the martial arts performance is most popular with families, while the Pagoda Forest and the First Patriarch’s Hall are often overlooked. Be advised that the scenic area is significantly commercialized, so check prices for vegetarian meals and surrounding services in advance. Based on actual conditions, allocate your energy wisely: tackle the main attractions in the morning when you are fresh, slow down in the afternoon, and avoid exhausting yourself on the first day, or you won’t have energy for the following days.

Day 2: Mount Song

Gather in the morning and depart for Mount Song. Follow the guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for photos and rest; at noon, enjoy local specialty dishes, and in the evening, check into the hotel to recharge for the next day's itinerary.

Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes the Mount Song attraction. Mount Song is the Central Peak among the Five Great Mountains, mainly located in Dengfeng City, and is divided into Taishi and Shaoshi mountains. The main peak, Junji Peak, has an elevation of about 1,492 meters. Its most remarkable feature is that Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism have coexisted side by side on the same mountain for a thousand years: Songyang Academy was a major center of Neo-Confucianism during the Song Dynasty, and the famous story of 'Chengmen Lizhi' happened here; the Zhongyue Temple is one of the largest and best-preserved temple complexes among the Five Great Mountains; the Guanshengtai in Gaocheng Town was constructed under the supervision of Guo Shoujing during the Yuan Dynasty and is one of the oldest existing astronomical observation buildings. In 2010, the historical complex 'Center of Heaven and Earth,' represented by Songyang Academy, Zhongyue Temple, Songyue Temple Pagoda, Shaolin Temple Permanent Residence, Pagoda Forest, Chuzu Monastery, and Guanshengtai, was inscribed on the World Heritage List. My understanding is that on the first day, there's no need to rush—start with the Academy and Zhongyue Temple to understand the ritual framework of the 'Center of Heaven and Earth,' and save your energy for climbing the mountain later; if time allows, in the evening, head to the Shaoshi Mountain Sanhuangzhai plank road to watch the sunset, which is the most photographically rewarding part of the trip.

Tips: There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains, and it can be windy at the summit. A windproof jacket and warm inner layers are highly recommended. Visitors generally report that most believe Mount Song is worth a special visit. It is advised to slow down, listen to the guide's explanations, and reserve time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Take the actual situation into account, respect local customs, dress appropriately when entering religious sites, and avoid pointing indiscriminately—a simple greeting can be met with kindness.

Day 3: Guoliang Village

Gather in the morning and depart for Guoliang Village, follow the guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for taking photos and resting; enjoy local specialty cuisine at noon, check in to the hotel in the evening, and recharge for the next day's itinerary.

Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Guoliang Village attractions. Guoliang Village is hidden on the cliffs deep within the Taihang Mountains and is famous for the "Cliff-Hanging Road". In the 1970s, villagers, aiming to open a passage to the outside world, spent more than five years chiseling a tunnel about 1,300 meters long into the cliff without any large machinery, a miracle dubbed the "modern-day Yu Gong". This cliff-hanging road is now the most hardcore check-in spot in the Taihang Mountains, offering views of deep gorges and cliffside villages along the way. Guoliang Village is also called the "Chinese Film Village" because several films and TV shows have been shot here. My suggestion is to allow enough time when walking the cliff-hanging road, look around and take photos while paying attention to your steps and passing vehicles; the best light is in the early morning or evening, while noon light tends to be flat; wear non-slip shoes and avoid getting too close to the cliff edge.

Kind Reminder: The ancient town has a dazzling array of specialty products. Try before you buy, compare prices at several shops, and spend rationally. Tourists generally report that the stone village on the cliff is connected to the cliff-hanging road, and the filming locations come with a story. Note that the village's food and accommodation are simple, so lower your expectations for a more enjoyable experience. In practical terms, the risk of group tours is rushing through sites, so listening to the guide is the essence; the cultural stories behind each attraction are often more unforgettable than the photos. If you don’t understand something, ask the guide on the spot.

Day 4: Departure

Dedicated transportation to the station/airport according to flight or train times, ending a pleasant journey and returning home with full memories.

Friendly reminder: On the day of return, please pack your luggage the night before, and place your ID, power bank, and souvenirs in an easily accessible location, keeping valuables with you. Visitors commonly report that the return day is when they are most likely to forget things. Many tourists advise packing ID, power bank, and souvenirs together in one bag the night before, and allowing plenty of time for getting to the station/airport. Based on actual circumstances, be punctual: arrive at the meeting point five to ten minutes early. It's better for the vehicle to wait for people than for people to wait for the vehicle, so don't make everyone wait for you.
