Day 1: Longmen Grottoes

Gather in the morning and depart for Longmen Grottoes, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing plenty of time for photos and rest; enjoy local specialty cuisine at noon, check in to the hotel in the evening to rest and prepare for the next day's itinerary.

Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Longmen Grottoes attractions. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliff faces along the south bank of the Yi River in Luoyang. Since Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang, it has been continuously developed, spanning the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang dynasties. Currently, there are over 2,300 niches, more than 100,000 statues, and over 2,800 engraved inscriptions and steles. The most astonishing is the Vairocana Buddha of Fengxian Temple, which is over 17 meters tall, with a full face and compassionate eyes, said to be carved in the likeness of Empress Wu Zetian, representing the pinnacle of Tang dynasty stone carving art. Along with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang, it is one of China's three major grottoes and a World Cultural Heritage site. During the visit, walk south along the Yi River trail from the West Mountain Grottoes. Bin Yang Three Caves, Wanfo Cave, and Lotus Cave each have highlights. Cross the bridge to the East Mountain Worship Terrace for an overview. My suggestion is to visit the main caves in the West Mountain in the morning, enjoy the Buddha with fewer crowds, and in the afternoon, go to the East Mountain for panoramas at the best lighting; walking along both banks of the Yi River requires retracing steps, so comfortable shoes can save a lot of effort.

Tips: Many of the grottoes are built against cliffs, so maintain a safe distance and hold onto railings when viewing, and take care of the elderly and children. Visitors generally report that most feel the Vairocana Buddha is the most stunning, and the sunsets at West Mountain provide the best photo lighting; walking along both banks of the Yi River requires retracing steps, so it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and set aside half a day. Considering practical situations, long trips risk dehydration, so carry a water bottle and drink small amounts frequently; on the first night in highlands or mountainous areas, avoid washing your hair or bathing too long to allow your body to adjust.

Day 2: Jiguan Cave

In the morning, gather and depart for Jiguan Cave, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, and allow plenty of time for photos and rest; at noon, enjoy local specialty dishes, and in the evening, check into the hotel to recharge for the next day's itinerary.

Attraction Introduction: This stop is Jiguan Cave. Jiguan Cave is a karst cave in Luanchuan, with stalactites of all shapes and forms inside. Stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone flowers transform into gorgeous colors under the lights. The cave maintains a constant temperature all year round, warm in winter and cool in summer. The cave is densely packed with attractions, changing scenery with every step, and paired with explanations, you can understand the miraculous geological changes of hundreds of millions of years. It complements Longtan Grand Canyon, forming a classic geological wonder route in western Henan. My understanding is that once inside the cave, remember to follow the explanation, as the formation and naming of the stalactites are very interesting, and it’s easy to miss highlights if you look by yourself; the cave floor is slippery and some areas are low, so wear anti-slip shoes and watch your head.

Friendly Tips: The hiking sections have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear anti-slip sports shoes. For those with mobility issues, it is recommended to take the cable car up and down. Visitors generally feedback that most consider Jiguan Cave worth a special visit, so it is advisable to slow down, listen to the guide's explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. According to actual conditions, be time-conscious, arrive five to ten minutes early for gatherings, better that people wait for the vehicle than the vehicle waiting for people, don’t make everyone wait for you.

Day 3: Return Trip

Gather in the morning and set off for Erlitou, follow the guide to explore the main attractions, leaving ample time for photos and rest; have a local specialty meal at noon, check into the hotel in the evening, and recharge for the next day's itinerary.

Friendly reminder: On the return day, be sure to check your flight or train schedule, leave early with enough buffer time, and check the room once more before checking out to ensure nothing is left behind. Visitors generally report that most tourists buy some souvenirs ahead of time before returning, so it is recommended to purchase them from reputable stores and keep the receipts to avoid last-minute stress. Depending on the actual situation, the best times for photos are early morning or late afternoon—there are fewer people and softer light in the morning, and the golden glow at dusk is ideal; at noon, the light is harsh and crowded, so it’s better to rest during that time.
