Day 1: Guoliang Village

Today's Taihang trip focuses on the cliff-hanging road and film village, with a distant view of the canyon villages; filming will continue in the afternoon and there will be rest in the evening.

Attraction introduction: A key highlight in the itinerary is Guoliang Village, Guoliang Village hidden high on the cliffs deep in the Taihang Mountains, famous for the 'cliff-hanging road'—in the 1970s, villagers built a passage to the outside world without any large machinery, taking more than five years to chiseling and hammering a tunnel about 1,300 meters long in the sheer cliffs, a phenomenon known as the 'contemporary Yu Gong' miracle. This cliff-hanging road is now the hardest-core check-in spot in the Taihang Mountains, allowing visitors to overlook the deep abyss and canyon villages while walking on it. Guoliang Village is also called the 'Chinese Film Village' due to being the location for several films and TV dramas. My understanding is to allow enough time when walking the cliff-hanging road, watch and shoot along the way, pay attention to your feet and passing vehicles; the best light is in the early morning or evening, while noon is rather flat. Wear non-slip shoes and avoid getting too close to the cliff wall.

Tips: The streets of the ancient town are crisscrossed and easy to get lost, so remember the meeting time and notable landmarks. Visitors generally report that the cliff-top stone village is connected to the cliff-hanging road, and the filming locations have a built-in sense of story; please note that village food and lodging are simple, so lower expectations to enjoy more. Based on the actual situation, separate your ID and wallet, take photos of important documents for backup on your phone, so that in case of loss you can quickly replace them and not disrupt your trip.

Day 2: Yuntai Mountain

Arrive in the morning, take the sightseeing shuttle bus to first visit Hongshi Gorge Danxia, then proceed to Tanpu Gorge Waterfalls; have a simple lunch in the scenic area at noon, in the afternoon either climb Zhuyu Peak or take a stroll through Quanpu Gorge, and return to the hotel in the evening.

Scenic spot introduction: Today's itinerary includes scenic spots, located in Xiuwu, and is one of the first World Geoparks, known for the red cliffs and green waters of Hongshi Gorge, the cascading waterfalls of Tanpu Gorge, the 'Asia's tallest waterfall' Yuntai Tian Waterfall in Quanpu Gorge, and the sunrise over the sea of clouds at Zhuyu Peak. It is the most representative landscape on the southern slope of the Taihang Mountains. Hongshi Gorge is the essence among the essence, a red quartz sandstone gorge about two kilometers long, with winding green waters at the valley bottom and red cliffs like clouds; Zhuyu Peak is famous due to the Tang dynasty poet Wang Wei's line 'Everywhere I plant cornel, yet a person is missing.' Taking the cable car to the top offers a panoramic view of the Taihang peaks. Shuttle buses connect various points within the scenic area, and the paths are gentle, suitable for family trips. In my opinion, one day is not enough to cover everything, so it is best to prioritize Hongshi Gorge and Monkey Valley, and allow plenty of time for the long queues for the shuttle bus; it's cool for water activities in summer, and the foliage is splendid in autumn, each season has its own charm.

Tips: Many mountain paths are slippery, so pay special attention to shifting your center of gravity backward and slowing down when going downhill, and a pair of knee guards can be prepared. Visitors generally report that Hongshi Gorge is considered the most photogenic section, and the sea of clouds at Zhuyu Peak is worth seeing; note that the queues for the shuttle bus are long, so if you cannot finish the day, prioritize Hongshi Gorge and Monkey Valley. Depending on the situation, carry some loose change and small packaged snacks, useful when signals are poor or for emergency supplies, so don't wait until you're hungry to look for them.

Day 3: Taihang Grand Canyon

Depart from the hotel early in the morning and head straight to Taihang Grand Canyon. First, listen to the tour guide explain the background and highlights, then explore freely at your own pace and take additional photos according to your interests. After lunch, take a short rest and return to the hotel in the evening to conserve energy for the next day.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights on the itinerary is Taihang Grand Canyon. Taihang Grand Canyon spans the junction of Shanxi, Hebei, and Henan provinces, with Red Flag Canal cutting through the mountains. Peach Blossom Valley, Wangxiang Rock, and Taihang Sky Road connect the majestic and the beautiful, showcasing the scenery of the Taihang Mountains. Peach Blossom Valley is famous for its waterfalls and streams, Wangxiang Rock is known for its cliffside walkways, and Taihang Sky Road allows visitors to take a sightseeing bus to view the entire canyon panorama. In spring, the mountains are in full bloom, and in autumn, the forests are ablaze with color, with each season offering unique sights. My understanding is that the scenic area is large and the attractions are dispersed, so it’s important to plan your route and prioritize the core spots. Hold onto the railings at steep walkways, and those afraid of heights should proceed according to their limits.

Tips: The water-access areas in the canyon are slippery, so make sure to wear anti-slip creek shoes or sports shoes, and protect valuables like your phone from water. Visitors generally report that Peach Blossom Valley’s water scenery is tranquil and Taihang Sky Road is steep, with a new scene at every step. Remember to take the sightseeing bus, as weather can greatly affect the experience. Considering actual conditions, mountain weather can change quickly, so a windproof jacket is more practical than anything else. Choose comfortable, non-slip shoes; it’s better to take fewer photos than to twist an ankle.

Day 4: Yin Ruins

Today's exploration journey focuses on the oracle bone inscriptions' discovery site and the story of the Houmuwu Ding, along with an understanding of the Shang Dynasty capital through the museum exhibits; in the afternoon, free time for retakes, and in the evening, rest.

Scenic Spot Introduction: Today's itinerary includes 1 scenic spot. The site is the late Shang Dynasty capital ruins, located in Anyang. It is the birthplace of oracle bone inscriptions and the discovery site of the Houmuwu Ding (originally called Simuwu Ding), listed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2006. This place was once the capital established by King Pan Geng after moving Yin, lasting more than 270 years. Ruins of the palace and ancestral temple, royal graves area, and chariot pits are clearly visible. Oracle bone inscriptions were first discovered here, tracing China's historical record era back to the Shang Dynasty; the new Anyang Museum systematically displays bronzes, jades, oracle bones, and other artifacts, making it the most intuitive classroom to understand Shang civilization. My understanding is that first visiting the palace and ancestral temple ruins and chariot pits to establish a spatial concept, then entering the museum to examine artifacts in detail, links the two lines for a complete experience; the oracle bones and heavy bronzes are the essence, and following the guide is far more meaningful than a casual glance.

Warm Tips: There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountainous area, and it is windy at the mountain top. A windproof jacket and warm inner layers are very necessary. Visitors generally feel that the oracle bones and Simuwu Ding make history 'come alive,' and many say the new museum is more worthwhile than the open-air ruins; it is advised to pay attention to the guide to understand better. Based on actual conditions, avoid impulsive shopping; if you see a 'limited-time offer,' wait for three minutes before deciding. If you really want to buy souvenirs, choose reputable stores and keep the receipts for peace of mind.
