Luoyang 6-Day Tour: White Horse Temple & Chongdu Valley
Luoyang 6-day tour covering White Horse Temple and Chongdu Valley and Baiyun Mountain. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: White Horse Temple
Today's journey of paying respects to Buddha involves following the guide from Qiyun Pagoda to the Sutra Library, listening to explanations along the way, and understanding the two thousand years of incense offerings at China's first ancient temple; in the afternoon, take a leisurely walk around the temple, and rest in the evening.
Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is White Horse Temple. White Horse Temple is located in the eastern part of Luoyang City and was originally built during the Yongping era of the Eastern Han Dynasty. It was constructed to commemorate the White Horse carrying scriptures and the initial spread of Buddhism to the Central Plains. It is revered as 'China's First Ancient Temple' and is the first government-sponsored temple built after Buddhism was introduced to China. Within the temple, the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, the Great Buddha Hall, and the Heavenly King Hall are arranged along the central axis, and between the red walls and green cypresses, incense has been burning continuously for more than 2,000 years. Notably, the temple also has exotically styled halls donated by countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, and India, presenting a unique scenery showing the eastward transmission and return of Buddhist culture. My understanding is that one should first view the main halls along the central axis upon entering, then stroll to the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, and finally visit the exotic halls on the sides to experience cultural integration. Coming in the early morning when there are fewer people is best, as the morning light on the red walls and ancient cypresses is most picturesque, and it also helps avoid peak tour group crowds.
Tips: There are many incense stalls around the temple, so buy incense as needed and consume reasonably. Visitors generally report that the exotic style halls (Thai/Myanmar/Indian courtyards) are photogenic, and people find them more spacious than expected. Please note that walking to the international temple area is a bit far, so save some energy for it. According to the actual situation, be punctual and arrive five to ten minutes before the scheduled gathering time; it's better for others to wait for the car than for the car to wait for anyone, so don't let everyone wait for you.
Day 2: Chongdugou
Morning visit Chongdugou, walk along the Jinji River and Dicuì River to see bamboo forests and waterfalls; at noon, taste wild vegetables and farmhouse meals; in the afternoon, stroll through villages in western Henan, enjoying the coolness typical of Jiangnan water towns.
Attraction introduction: This stop is Chongdugou, Chongdugou is located in Luanchuan, known for its ten-thousand-acre bamboo forests, cascading waterfalls, and the farming culture of western Henan. It is one of the few places in Henan that offers a “Jiangnan water town”-style summer retreat. The scenic area is divided into two sections: Jinji River and Dicuì River. Jinji River is famous for its waterfalls, splashing and refreshing; Dicuì River features continuous bamboo forests, filling the eyes with green while strolling. Here you can stay in farmhouses, taste wild vegetables, and experience authentic village life in western Henan, with a relaxed pace, especially suitable for family leisure tours and summer vacations. My understanding is to slow down and not rush through the sights—walking in the bamboo forest and sitting by the creek is the proper way to enjoy Chongdugou; visiting in summer is the most comfortable, so cool that you won’t want to leave.
Tips: The water-access sections of the canyon are slippery, so be sure to wear non-slip stream shoes or sports shoes, and keep valuables like mobile phones waterproofed. Visitors generally feedback that most think Chongdugou is worth a special trip; it is recommended to slow down, follow the guide for explanations, and leave time for the details that touch you most and the best photo spots. According to actual conditions, when taking photos, pay attention not only to taking pictures but also to your footing and surroundings. Always hold steady on viewing platforms or at the edges of walkways.
Day 3: Free activities
Early in the morning, enter Longtan Grand Canyon and take a leisurely walk along the creek trail in the coolness; especially refreshing in summer. In the afternoon, enjoy free activities, and you can take additional photos of the narrow sky; return in the evening.
Friendly reminder: On free activity days, there is no unified schedule. Before going out, note the location of the hotel and the meeting time, make sure your phone is fully charged, and bring a power bank. Tourists generally feedback that many feel free activity days are the most relaxed, allowing them to follow their own pace. Based on the actual situation, be time-conscious; arrive five to ten minutes early for the meeting. It is better to have people wait for the vehicle than the vehicle wait for people—don't make everyone wait for you.
Day 4: Baiyun Mountain
Today's vacation trip includes taking the cable car and scenic shuttle bus to connect Yuhuang Peak, Jiulong Waterfall, and the Highland Peony Garden, with a relaxed pace; free activities in the afternoon and rest in the evening.
Attraction introduction: This stop is at Baiyun Mountain, located in the heart of Funiu Mountains in Song County. Yuhuang Peak offers views of the sea of clouds at sunrise. With high forest coverage and abundant negative oxygen ions, it is a natural oxygen bar. Within the scenic area, Jiulong Waterfall and Highland Peony Garden each have unique features. In summer, it’s a good place to escape the heat, and in autumn, visitors can enjoy the red leaves. It is one of the few high-mountain resort-type scenic areas in Henan. Cable cars or scenic shuttle buses can connect all the spots. The mountaintop offers a broad view and is often shrouded in mist, resembling a fairyland. My understanding is that visiting in summer to escape the heat is most worthwhile. The coolness in the mountains sharply contrasts with the heat in the city; waking up early to climb Yuhuang Peak for the sea of clouds at sunrise requires some luck, but even if the sunrise isn’t visible, the scenery of the mountains in the morning mist is beautiful enough.
Tips: Many mountain paths are slippery, so be especially careful going downhill by shifting your center of gravity back and slowing your pace. Knee pads are recommended. Visitors generally give positive feedback; most think that Baiyun Mountain is worth a special visit. It is suggested to slow down, follow the guide’s explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best spots for photos. In practice, the longest journeys are most affected by dehydration, so carry a water bottle and drink small amounts frequently. On the first night at high altitudes or in mountainous areas, avoid washing your hair or taking long baths to allow your body some time to adjust.
