Luoyang 6-Day Tour: Laojun Mountain & White Horse Temple
Luoyang 6-day tour covering Laojun Mountain and White Horse Temple and Wangcheng Park. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Laojun Mountain
In the morning, take the cable car up to Laojun Mountain and climb the Golden Summit Daoist temple cluster. On clear days, you'll encounter a sea of clouds; Have a light meal at the summit at noon, then walk the ten-li Huaping Trail in the afternoon, overlooking the mountains from a glass viewing platform, and descend in the evening to check into the hotel.
Attraction introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Laojun Mountain, located in Luanchuan County Luoyang. It is the main peak of Funiu Mountain and a famous Taoist mountain, said to be the place where Laozi, the founder of Taoism, retired for cultivation. The Golden Summit Daoist temple cluster stands atop a peak over 2,000 meters above sea level. Its golden tiles and red walls and surging sea of clouds are renowned as "a spectacular feast on earth and a glimpse of the flourishing world." The Ten-Mile Painted Screen is the highlight of the entire trip. A high-altitude plank road suspended above a sheer cliff changes views with every step, offering panoramic views of peaks, forests, sea of clouds, and sunrises. You can take a two-level cable car up the mountain; on sunny days, you can watch the sea of clouds and sunrise from the summit. In winter, it is a highly popular snow-viewing spot in the Central Plains. My understanding is: be sure to take the cable car up the mountain early to seize the golden summit and the beautiful scenery of the Ten-Mile Painting Screen; At the summit, the wind is strong and the temperature low; a windbreaker and thermos bottle are standard, and the glass observation deck is a must-have.
Friendly reminder: The mountain roads are slippery, so be sure to shift your weight back and slow down when going downhill. It's advisable to bring a pair of knee pads. Visitors generally say that the sea of clouds and sunrise at the Golden Summit are recognized as the main highlights, and many people stay at the summit waiting for dawn. Reminder: The temperature difference at the summit and long cable car queues are key, so be sure to arrive early during peak season. Based on actual conditions, be punctual. Gather five to ten minutes early. Better to wait for the car than for the car—don't make everyone wait for you.
Day 2: White Horse Temple
Enter early in the morning, and take advantage of the morning light to quietly explore among the red walls and green cypresses, focusing on the Qiyun Pagoda and two exotic Buddhist temples; In the afternoon, have free time, and you can take photos of the central axis camera position, then return to the hotel in the evening.
Attraction introduction: One highlight of the itinerary is White Horse Temple, located east of Luoyang city. It was first built during the Yongping era of the Eastern Han Dynasty to commemorate the White Horse Carrying Scriptures and the early introduction of Buddhism to the Central Plains. It is honored as "China's First Ancient Temple" and the first government-run temple built after Buddhism was introduced to China. Inside the temple, the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, the Great Buddha Hall, and the Heavenly King Hall are arranged along the central axis, with red walls and green cypress trees where incense offerings have continued for over two thousand years. It is worth mentioning that the temple also features exotic-style Buddhist halls donated by countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, and India, showcasing the unique landscape of Buddhist culture flowing eastward and backward. My understanding is that when entering the temple, first see the main hall along the central axis, then circle around to the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, and finally visit the foreign Buddhist halls on both sides to experience cultural fusion; Come early in the morning when there are fewer people; the sunlight shining on the red walls and ancient cypress trees creates the most poetic atmosphere, and you can also avoid the peak of tour groups.
Friendly reminder: Please keep quiet and dress neatly when entering the temple. Generally, no photography or touching ritual objects inside the hall—do as you wish. Visitors generally report that the exotic-style Buddhist halls (Thai/Burmese/Seal Temple) have a high rate of photo shoots, and most feel it's more spacious than expected; Reminder: The international temple area is quite far to walk, so leave some footwork. Based on actual conditions, don't just focus on taking photos—pay attention to your footing and surroundings, and be sure to stand firmly at the edge of the viewing platform and boardwalk.
Day 3: Wangcheng Park
Today's theme is Wangcheng Park. Avoid peak crowds and enter the park in staggered times, following recommended routes for an in-depth tour; Enjoy local flavors nearby at noon, have free time in the afternoon or join a guided tour, and stay at a hotel to rest in the evening.
Attraction introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Wangcheng Park. Wangcheng Park is located on Luoyang, named for its location atop the ruins of the Eastern Zhou royal city. It has been one of the main venues for the China Luoyang Peony Culture Festival and is the most familiar city park to Luoyang residents. Every April, famous peonies such as Yao Huang, Wei Purple, and Zhao Pink bloom in a dazzling display of vibrant colors; The park also preserves the ruins of Zhou King's City and a zoo, combining historical heritage with leisure functions, making it a classic spot for visitors to check in at the "Peony Flower City." My understanding is that if you visit during peony season (April), you must make this a must-visit spot. Early mornings with fewer people and peonies with dew are most vibrant; Outside the flowering season, it's more suitable for leisurely walks.
Friendly reminder: Food prices in the park tend to be high, so bring your own water and snacks, and take care of your belongings. Visitors generally report that most think Wangcheng Park is worth a special trip. It's recommended to slow down and follow the guide to listen to the explanations, saving time for the most impressive details and the best camera angles. Depending on the situation, shoot early or late—the morning is less crowded and the light is softer, the twilight is best at dusk, and the noon peak is cramped and flat, so it's more cost-effective to rest.
