Anyang 4-day tour covering Yuntai Mountain and Taihang Grand Canyon and Red Flag Canal. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Yuntai Mountain
Start early in the morning and, taking advantage of the coolness, first visit Hongshi Gorge and Tanpu Gorge to experience the wonder of water flowing uphill; in the afternoon, you can take the cable car up Zhuyu Peak to overlook the Taihang Mountains, and descend in the evening.
Attractions Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Yuntai Mountain attractions. Yuntai Mountain is located in Jiaozuo Xiuwu and is among the first batch of World Geoparks. It is famous for the red cliffs and clear waters of Hongshi Gorge, the waterfalls and streams of Tanpu Gorge, Mount Springwater Gorge’s "Highest Waterfall in Asia" Yuntai Waterfall, and the sea of clouds sunrise at Zhuyu Peak. It is the most representative landscape on the southern foot of the Taihang Mountains. Hongshi Gorge is the essence of the essence, a red quartz sandstone canyon about two kilometers long, with winding emerald water at the canyon bottom and crimson cliffs like rosy clouds; Zhuyu Peak is famous for the verse of Tang dynasty poet Wang Wei "Though all wear dogwood, there is one person less," and taking the cable car to the top allows an overview of the Taihang peaks. The scenic area's shuttle buses connect various spots, and the walking paths are gentle, suitable for family outings. My understanding is that you can't see everything in a day, so prioritize Hongshi Gorge and Monkey Valley as the core sites; allow enough time for queues for the scenic shuttle. Summer is cool and lets you enjoy the water, while autumn brings colorful layered forests, each with its own charm.
Warm Tips: The mountain trails have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes; those with difficulty walking are advised to take the cable car up and down. Visitors generally feel that Hongshi Gorge is considered the most photogenic section, and the sea of clouds at Zhuyu Peak is also worthwhile; note that the queues for the scenic shuttle are long, so if you can't see everything in one day, prioritize Hongshi Gorge and Monkey Valley. Considering the actual situation, the worst scenario on a group tour is rushing through everything; listening to the explanations is the real essence. The cultural stories behind each attraction are often more memorable than photos, so ask the guide immediately if you don't understand something.
Day 2: Taihang Grand Canyon
Today, the theme is Taihang Grand Canyon. Avoid peak crowds by visiting the park during off-peak hours and follow the recommended route for an in-depth tour; have local cuisine nearby at noon, spend the afternoon on free activities or join the guide for extra sightseeing, and stay at the hotel at night to rest.
Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Taihang Grand Canyon. Taihang Grand Canyon stretches across the junction of Shanxi, Hebei, and Henan provinces, with Red Flag Canal passing through the mountains. Peach Blossom Valley, Wangxiang Rock, and Taihang Sky Road connect the majestic and the beautiful, showcasing the scenery of the Taihang Mountains. Peach Blossom Valley is famous for its waterfalls and streams, Wangxiang Rock is known for its cliffside walkways, and Taihang Sky Road allows visitors to take a sightseeing bus to see the full view of the canyon. Spring features blooming mountain flowers, autumn has colorful foliage, and each season has its highlights. My understanding is that the scenic area is large and attractions are scattered, so it is essential to plan the route carefully and prioritize the core sites; hold on to railings on steep walkways, and those afraid of heights should proceed with caution.
Friendly Tips: Canyon trails run close to water and cliffs, so do not climb over railings or play in dangerous areas, and keep an eye on accompanying children. Tourists generally comment that Peach Blossom Valley has tranquil water scenery, while Taihang Sky Road is steep and scenic, and they say there is a new view at every step; taking the sightseeing bus is a must, as the experience is greatly affected by the weather. In practice, to enjoy authentic food, go deeper into the alleys; the lineup at the main gate of the scenic area is long and the taste is average. For local specialties, ask for prices and compare; local supermarkets often offer more genuine products.
Day 3: Red Flag Canal
Morning tour: walk through Youth Cave and see the Watershed Garden, experiencing the 'Man-Made Heavenly River' on the cliffs of Taihang Mountain; have lunch nearby at noon. In the afternoon, you can continue to visit or Wangxiang Rock, and return in the evening.
Scenic Spot Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is the 'Man-Made Heavenly River'. It was carved by the people of Linzhou on the cliffs of Taihang Mountain in the 1960s. The total length is more than 1,500 kilometers, involving leveling 1,250 mountain peaks, constructing over 150 aqueducts, and digging more than 200 tunnels. It took nearly ten years to complete and stands as a monument to the Chinese nation's spirit of self-improvement. Youth Cave is the most dangerous part of the whole route, chiseled by 300 young squad members on cliffside rocks; Watershed Garden and the 'Man-Made Heavenly River' Memorial Hall fully depict the hardships of constructing the canal. This place combines red-themed education with the majestic scenery of Taihang, and today it is also a breathtaking cultural landscape. My understanding is that visiting the memorial hall first to understand the background of the canal construction, and then walking through Youth Cave, is the way to truly grasp the significance of this canal; hike along the canal within your capability, wear non-slip shoes, and watch your step.
Tips: Many mountain trails are slippery, especially on descents—keep your center of gravity back and slow your pace; knee pads may be useful. Visitors generally feel that the 'Man-Made Heavenly River' has a strong symbolic significance, resonating more with middle-aged tourists; the explanation at the exhibition hall is worth listening to, as it helps understand that period of history. According to your physical condition, pace yourself: tackle the highlight in the morning when you have energy, and slow the rhythm in the afternoon; don't exhaust yourself on the first day, or you will have no energy for the following days.
Day 4: Return
Transfer to the departure terminal per your booked train or flight; keep travel documents and tickets in your carry-on.
