Anyang 5-Day Tour: Yuntai Mountain & Wanxianshan
Anyang 5-day tour covering Yuntai Mountain and Wanxianshan and Red Flag Canal. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Yuntai Mountain
Today's water-friendly journey connects Hongshi Gorge, Tanpu Gorge, and Quanpu Gorge along the trail, with a gentle pace suitable for the whole family; in the afternoon there is free time for additional photography, and in the evening time to rest.
Attraction Introduction: There are several attractions in today's itinerary. Located in Xiuwu, it is one of the first world geoparks. It is famous for the red cliffs and clear waters of Hongshi Gorge, the waterfalls and streams of Tanpu Gorge, the 'highest waterfall in Asia,' Yuntai Tian Waterfall in Quanpu Gorge, and the sea of clouds sunrise at Zhuyu Peak. It is the most representative landscape of the southern Taihang Mountains. Hongshi Gorge is the essence of the essence, a two-kilometer-long red quartz sandstone canyon, with winding emerald waters at the valley floor and cliffs as red as sunset. Zhuyu Peak is renowned due to Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei's verse 'placing zhuyu everywhere, yet one is missing'; taking the cable car to the top offers a panoramic view of the Taihang peaks. Shuttles within the scenic area connect the main points, and the trails are gentle, making it suitable for family trips. In my understanding, if you can't finish it in one day, prioritize Hongshi Gorge and Monkey Valley; lines for the shuttle can be long, so allow plenty of time. In summer, it is cool for water activities; in autumn, the forests are colorful, each season having its own charm.
Tips: There is a large temperature difference in the mountains between morning and evening, and it is windy at the summit. A windproof jacket and warm inner layers are necessary. Visitors usually report that Hongshi Gorge is recognized as the most photogenic section, and the sea of clouds at Zhuyu Peak is also worthwhile; note that lines for the scenic shuttle can be long, so if you can't finish in one day, prioritize Hongshi Gorge and Monkey Valley. Based on actual circumstances, keep documents and wallets separate, and take photos of important documents for mobile backup, so in case of loss they can be quickly reissued without affecting your itinerary.
Day 2: Wanxian Mountain
Assemble in the morning and depart for Wanxian Mountain. Follow the guide along the main route, visiting the key highlights one by one, allowing enough time for photos and rest. At noon, enjoy local specialty meals. In the afternoon, continue exploring, and in the evening, check into the hotel to rest and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Wanxian Mountain. The Wanxian Mountain Scenic Area is located deep in the Taihang Mountains of Huixian. Within it are the Guoliang Hanging Road and Nanping Danfeng Gorge, with red cliffs and clear waterfalls intertwined, making it one of the most representative landscape galleries of the Taihang Mountains. This area is well-known for being featured in several films and TV shows. Attractions such as Guoliang Village, Tianchi, and the watchtower form an impressive Taihang hiking route. The summer temperature is pleasantly moderate, and it’s a place not far from Zhengzhou and Luoyang where you can experience the Taihang landscape up close. In my understanding, there is a large amount of hiking and many steps, so make sure to wear non-slip shoes. Pay attention to traffic on the hanging road segments, and the red cliffs are best photographed in the early morning or evening light.
Tips: Many mountain paths are slippery, especially when going downhill, so shift your center of gravity back and slow your pace. You may want to bring knee pads. Tourists generally report that the hanging road (Guoliang Tunnel) is the most impressive and photogenic, while mountain roads may cause motion sickness; it's recommended to bring motion sickness medication and take your time on viewing platforms. Considering the practical situation, carry some small change and packaged snacks, which can be useful due to poor signal or temporary shortages in the scenic area—don't wait until you're hungry to look for them.
Day 3: Red Flag Canal
Early in the morning, head to Red Flag Canal, first visit the memorial hall to learn about the history of the canal construction, then hike along the canal to Youth Cave to experience the Linzhou spirit of perseverance; enjoy free activities in the afternoon and return in the evening.
Attraction Introduction: A highlight arranged in the itinerary is Red Flag Canal. Red Flag Canal is an 'artificial river' carved into the cliffs of the Taihang Mountains by the people of Linzhou in the 1960s. It has a total length of over 1,500 kilometers, required leveling 1,250 mountain peaks, constructing more than 150 aqueducts, and drilling over 200 tunnels, taking nearly ten years to complete. It stands as a monument to the spirit of perseverance of the Chinese nation. Youth Cave is the most dangerous section, carved out on sheer cliffs by 300 young volunteers; the Fen Shui Garden and Red Flag Canal Memorial Hall fully recount the hardships of the canal construction. This place combines red education and the magnificent scenery of the Taihang Mountains, and today is also an awe-inspiring cultural attraction. My understanding is that visiting the memorial hall first to learn about the canal background and then walking through Youth Cave is the best way to truly grasp the significance of this canal; when hiking along the canal, proceed according to your ability, wear anti-slip shoes, and watch your step.
Friendly Tips: The mountain trail has many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear anti-slip sports shoes. Those with limited mobility are recommended to use the cableway. Visitors commonly feedback that the 'artificial river' is a strong spiritual landmark, resonating more with middle-aged tourists; the explanation in the exhibition is worth listening to, as it helps understand that period of history. Considering the actual situation, mountain weather can change abruptly, so a windproof jacket is essential; shoes should definitely be comfortable and anti-slip. It's better to take fewer photos than to twist your ankle.
