Day 1: Yuntai Mountain

Early in the morning, take advantage of the cool weather to first visit Hongshi Gorge and Tanpu Gorge to experience the wonder of water flowing uphill; in the afternoon, you can take the cable car up to Zhuyu Peak to overlook the Taihang Mountains and descend in the evening.

Scenic Spot Introduction: Today's itinerary includes several scenic spots. One of them is located in Xiuwu and is among the first batch of World Geoparks, known for the red cliffs and green waters of Hongshi Gorge, the cascading waterfalls and streams of Tanpu Gorge, the 'tallest waterfall in Asia' Yuntai Tian Waterfall in Quanpu Gorge, and the sunrise sea of clouds at Zhuyu Peak. It is the most representative natural landscape of the southern Taihang Mountains. Hongshi Gorge is the essence among the essence, a red quartz sandstone gorge about two kilometers long, with winding green waters at the valley floor and red cliffs like rosy clouds; Zhuyu Peak is famous because of the Tang dynasty poet Wang Wei's line 'Planting zhuyu everywhere, yet a person is missing.' Taking the cable car to the top offers a panoramic view of the Taihang peaks. Shuttle buses connect various points within the scenic area, and the paths are gentle, suitable for family trips. In my opinion, if one day is not enough to see everything, it is best to prioritize Hongshi Gorge and Monkey Valley, and allow ample time for the long queues for the shuttle buses; visiting in summer offers cool waterside experiences, while autumn displays colorful forests—each season has its charm.

Tips: The mountain roads are often slippery, so be especially careful when going downhill by shifting your center of gravity backward and slowing your steps. Consider bringing a pair of knee pads. Visitors commonly report that Hongshi Gorge is considered the most photogenic section, and the sea of clouds at Zhuyu Peak is also worth seeing. Be reminded that queues for shuttle buses are long, so if you can’t see everything in one day, prioritize Hongshi Gorge and Monkey Valley. When taking photos, pay attention to your footing and surroundings, and make sure to stand securely when on viewing platforms or the edges of walkways.

Day 2: Red Flag Canal

Today's red-themed trip: Follow the guide to visit Qingnian Cave and Fen Shui Garden to understand the feats of the 1960s; in the afternoon, you can tour the surrounding area, and in the evening, rest.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights of the itinerary is Red Flag Canal. Red Flag Canal is the 'Artificial Heavenly River' carved by the people of Linzhou on the cliffs of the Taihang Mountains in the 1960s. It stretches over 1,500 kilometers, leveling 1,250 mountain peaks, building over 150 aqueducts, and digging more than 200 tunnels, taking nearly ten years to complete. It stands as a monument to the Chinese nation's spirit of self-improvement. Qingnian Cave is the most dangerous section, carved on sheer cliffs by 300 young volunteers; Fen Shui Garden and the Red Flag Canal Memorial Hall fully describe the hardships of building the canal. This place combines red education with the grandeur of the Taihang Mountains, and today it is also an awe-inspiring cultural site. My understanding is that one should visit the memorial hall first to learn about the canal's background, then walk through Qingnian Cave to truly understand the significance of this canal; hike along the canal according to your own ability, wear non-slip shoes, and pay attention to your footing.

Warm Tips: The mountain paths have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. Those with limited mobility are advised to use the cable car. Visitors commonly report that the 'Artificial Heavenly River' is a strong spiritual landmark that resonates more with middle-aged tourists; it is recommended to listen to the guided explanations in the museum to understand that period of history. Considering the lighting conditions, take photos early in the morning or at dusk — mornings have fewer people and soft light, evenings offer golden tones, whereas at noon the light is harsh and crowds are heavy, so it's better to rest then.
