Day 1: Guoliang Village

Today's Taihang trip focuses on the cliff-hanging road and film village, with a view of the canyon villages; in the afternoon there will be reshoots, and in the evening the group will rest.

Attraction Introduction: A highlight arranged in the itinerary is Guoliang Village, Guoliang Village is hidden on the sheer cliffs deep in the Taihang Mountains and is famous for the 'cliff-hanging road'. In the 1970s, villagers, in order to open a path to the outside world and without any large machinery, spent more than five years chiseling a tunnel about 1,300 meters long into the cliff face, which is considered a 'modern-day Foolish Old Man' miracle. Today, this cliff-hanging road is the hardest-core check-in spot in the Taihang Mountains, where walking along it allows you to overlook the abyss and canyon villages. Guoliang Village is also known as the 'Chinese Film Village' due to being the filming location of many movies and TV shows. My understanding is that when walking the cliff-hanging road, leave enough time, watch and take photos, pay attention to your footing and oncoming vehicles; the best light is in the early morning or evening, while at noon it is rather flat. Wear non-slip shoes and don’t get too close to the cliff wall.

Tips: The ancient town's specialties are dazzling; try before you buy, compare prices, and spend rationally. Visitors generally report that the stone village on the cliff is connected to the cliff-hanging road, and the film shooting locations have their own stories; note that village accommodations and food are simple, so lowering expectations will increase enjoyment. Based on actual conditions, carry some change and small packaged snacks, which can be useful when the signal is weak or temporary supplies are needed—don't wait until you're hungry to look.

Day 2: Red Flag Canal

Morning tour: walk through Youth Cave and see the Watersplitting Garden, experiencing the 'Man-Made Heavenly River' on the Taihang cliff; have a nearby lunch at noon. In the afternoon, you can continue to visit [0] or Wangxiang Cliff, and return in the evening.

Attraction introduction: A highlight arranged in the itinerary is [1]. [1] is a 'Man-Made Heavenly River' carved into the cliffs of the Taihang Mountains by the people of Linzhou in the 1960s. It is over 1,500 kilometers long, levels 1,250 mountaintops, builds over 150 aqueducts, and carves through more than 200 tunnels. It took nearly ten years to complete and stands as a monument to the self-improvement spirit of the Chinese nation. Youth Cave is the most dangerous section of the whole route, carved by 300 youth team members on the cliff; the Watersplitting Garden and the [1] Memorial Hall fully recount the hardships of the canal construction. This is a combination of red education and the magnificent Taihang scenery, now also a breathtaking cultural site. My understanding is that visiting the Memorial Hall first to learn about the canal's background, and then walking through Youth Cave, is the way to truly grasp the significance of this canal; hike along the canal within your capability, wear non-slip shoes, and watch your step.

Tips: The mountain climbing sections have many steps and steep slopes. Be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes; those with limited mobility are recommended to use the cableway. Visitors commonly feedback that the 'Man-Made Heavenly River' is a spiritual landmark with strong resonance, especially for middle-aged tourists. The explanations in the exhibition halls are worth listening to for understanding that period of history. Considering the actual situation, mountain weather can change suddenly, so a windproof jacket is essential. Make sure your shoes are slip-resistant and comfortable; it’s better to take fewer photos than to twist an ankle.

Day 3: Yin Ruins

Early in the morning, enter [0], first visit the palace area and the chariot and horse pits, then tour the royal tomb area, and follow the guide to understand the beginning of historical records; in the afternoon, visit the new museum hall, and return in the evening.

Attraction introduction: Today's itinerary includes [0] attractions. [0] is the late Shang Dynasty capital site, located in [1], the birthplace of oracle bones, and also the place where the Houmuwu Ding (originally called Simuwu Ding) was found. In 2006, it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site. This was once the capital after King Pan Geng moved the Shang capital to Yin, lasting more than two hundred and seventy years. The remains of the palace and ancestral temple, royal tomb area, and chariot and horse pits are clearly visible. Oracle bones were first discovered here, pushing the history of China's recorded history back to the Shang Dynasty; the new [0] museum hall systematically displays bronzes, jade, oracle bones, and other relics, making it the most intuitive classroom for understanding Shang civilization. My understanding is that first visiting the palace and ancestral temple ruins and the chariot and horse pits establishes a spatial concept, then going into the museum to carefully examine the artifacts connects the two lines and completes the experience; oracle bones and heavy bronzes are the essence, and following the guide is far better than a cursory glance.

Tips: The mountain area has large temperature differences between morning and evening, and the mountaintop wind is strong, so a windproof jacket and warm inner layers are necessary. Visitors generally report that the oracle bones and the Houmuwu Ding bring history to life, and visitors say the new museum hall is more worthwhile than the open-air site; it is recommended to combine it with the guide to understand properly. Based on actual circumstances, don’t shop impulsively; if you see a 'limited-time offer,' take three minutes to cool down first. If you really want to buy souvenirs, make sure to go to a legitimate shop and keep the receipts for safety.
