Day 1: Mount Song

Morning departure to Mount Song with your guide, covering the highlights with ample photo stops; local lunch; continue in the afternoon; hotel by evening.

Attraction: Today's itinerary includes Mount Song. As the Central Mountain of the Five Great Mountains, Mount Song lies in Dengfeng with two ridges — Taishi and Shaoshi — and its highest peak, Junji, rises about 1,492 m. In 2010 the Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in "The Centre of Heaven and Earth" — Songyang Academy, Zhongyue Temple, Songyue Pagoda, the Shaolin Monastery complex, the Pagoda Forest, the Ancestral Shrine and the Gaocheng Observatory — were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. What makes this mountain unique is that Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism have coexisted here for a millennium: Songyang Academy was a cradle of Song-dynasty Neo-Confucianism, where the celebrated story of "standing in snow at the master's door" is said to have taken place; Zhongyue Temple is among the largest and best-preserved temple complexes of the Five Mountains; and the Gaocheng Observatory, built under Guo Shoujing in the Yuan dynasty, is one of the oldest surviving astronomical structures. My take: do not rush day one — walk the academy and the temple to read the ritual landscape, save your legs for tomorrow, and if time allows, catch the sunset on the Sanhuangzhai cliff walk, the most photogenic stretch of the whole trip.

Friendly tips: A full walking day on cultural sites and mountain paths — wear non-slip sneakers and bring a light jacket, as mountain day-night temperature gaps are big and some steps stay damp; carry your ID and stay with your guide, noting the meeting time and place. Traveler feedback — the sights sit close by car but demand plenty of walking, so most visitors front-load their energy in the morning and take the afternoon easier. Practical note — spend the academy and temple time on the commentary: the steles, ancient cypresses and brick carvings reward a slow look, so do not just hurry past them.

Day 2: Shaolin Monastery

Early start straight to the Shaolin Monastery: first the guide's briefing on Chan and martial culture, then a slow walk through the Main Courtyard, the Pagoda Forest and the Ancestral Shrine, plus a scheduled kung fu show; local Dengfeng lunch; optional Songyang Academy or Sanhuangzhai in the afternoon before returning to the hotel.

Attraction: Today's itinerary includes the Shaolin Monastery. Nestled below Wuru Peak on the northern slope of Shaoshi Mountain, it was founded in 495 AD (the 19th year of the Northern Wei Taihe era) and is both the cradle of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and the birthplace of Shaolin kung fu, with over 1,500 years of history. Three stops matter most: the Main Courtyard runs along a central axis — Mountain Gate, Heavenly Kings Hall, Mahavira Hall, Sutra Repository and the Standing-in-Snow Pavilion; the Pagoda Forest is China's largest surviving cluster of ancient stupas, with 200-odd brick and stone tombs from the Tang to Qing dynasties, each marking a revered monk; the Damo Cave on Wuru Peak is said to be where Bodhidharma faced the wall for nine years, a two-hour round-trip hike; and the daily kung fu show in the Martial Arts Hall best displays the fists, weapons and hard qigong. My take: walk the central axis with the guide first, then wander at your own pace; keep quiet in the Pagoda Forest and circle the stupas; arrive 15 minutes early for the show to get a good seat.

Friendly tips: Temple etiquette matters — avoid photos and loud talk inside the halls, and stay solemn in the Pagoda Forest; the kung fu show runs at fixed times, so lock in the show time first and plan the rest of the route around it; carry your ID and follow your guide. Traveler feedback — the scenic area is fairly commercialized, so ask prices before trying the vegetarian meals or nearby shops. Practical note — crowds surge when the show ends, so watching it first and touring the Pagoda Forest afterwards is calmer; it is about a 20-minute walk from the Main Courtyard to the Sanhuangzhai cable-car station — pace yourself.

Day 3: Return

Transfer to the station or airport per your departure, ending a pleasant journey with full memories.

Friendly tips: Pack the night before and keep your ID, power bank and souvenirs in one easy-grab bag, valuables on you; leave ample time for the station or airport. Traveler feedback — buses and high-speed trains between Dengfeng and Zhengzhou are frequent, yet holiday tickets sell out fast, so book early. Practical note — with an afternoon or evening departure, there is still time for a leisurely bowl of braised noodles near the hotel and a stroll through a local market before you go.

Five days from Luoyang. In November the crowds thin out, the water in Red Stone Gorge keeps its dark green, and the single-file walk of about 1.5 km never doubles back. Two days later you take a boat across Emerald Lake and watch a village practise taiji.
