Zhengzhou 3-Day City Tour: Henan Museum, Erqi Tower and Yellow River Scenic Area

The museum sits on Dongfeng Road, reachable by metro. Arrive at nine and give the first hour to the Central Plains overview on the ground floor — it is the foundation for everything else.

The third floor holds the eight ancient capitals exhibition and the Archaeology of China show. The Jiahu bone flute there is worth the detour: a nine-thousand-year-old bone instrument capable of producing a scale. The Houmuwu ding, 830-odd kilograms and 1.3 metres tall, is the heaviest known bronze ritual vessel from the late Shang.

Spend the afternoon in the special exhibitions hall; the regional instruments and historical costume shows are both good.

Walk along Dongfeng Road in the evening toward Xitaikang Road for local eating — spicy soup, stewed noodles, soup dumplings. Stay in the city where walking out at night is easy.

The Erqi Tower is Zhengzhou's landmark — a paired tower commemorating the 1923 Beijing-Hankou railway strike. Arrive at nine and start with the memorial hall below.

The exhibition covers railway history and the strike. One point stands out: the Beijing-Hankou line was the first trunk route financed and built by Chinese investors, 1,400 kilometres linking Zhengzhou to Wuhan. Zhengzhou's modern layout grew out of it.

Walk south from Erqi Square past the old bank buildings and railway workers' housing, now cafes and bookshops.

Lunch in town, then the Yellow River Scenic Area, forty minutes out. Board the shuttle at the foot of Mangshan to reach the platform by the Mother Statue.

Water level depends on season — in the dry months the gravel bars show. Sit by the river in the afternoon; the wind is strong. Back to the city.

Leave at seven, ninety minutes on the expressway to Dengfeng. The park opens at eight; go to the Pagoda Forest first.

Over a hundred memorial stupas in forms spanning Tang to Qing. This overlaps with the Shaolin-focused itinerary but gets only half a day here, so we cover the Pagoda Forest and Chuzu Monastery without going deep into the temple complex.

Martial demonstration at ten, around twenty minutes. Lunch outside the park, then drive back, reaching Zhengzhou around one in the afternoon.
