Day 1: Shaolin Temple

Today's trip, from the Shanmen to the Sutra Library, taking a close look along the way, focusing on the solemnity of the Pagoda Forest and the impact of the martial arts performance; in the afternoon, leisurely visit the surrounding area, and check into the hotel in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes several attractions. It is located at Mount Shaoshi, Wuru Peak, Dengfeng, built in the 19th year of the Taihe era of the Northern Wei Dynasty (495 AD). It is both the ancestral home of Chan Buddhism and the birthplace of Shaolin martial arts, with a history of over 1,500 years. The main highlights are concentrated in three areas: the Changzhu Courtyard, along the central axis, consists sequentially of the Shanmen, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Sutra Library, and Lixue Pavilion, with halls and ancient steles laid out along the way; the Pagoda Forest is the largest existing ancient pagoda complex in China, with over 200 brick and stone tomb pagodas from the Tang, Song, to Qing dynasties, each corresponding to a high-ranking monk; the Dharma Cave on Wuru Peak is traditionally said to be where Bodhidharma meditated facing the wall for nine years. The martial arts hall performs Shaolin martial arts daily at set times, with punches, weapons, and hard Qigong demonstrating genuine skill. My understanding is to first walk the central axis with the guide before exploring freely; please remain quiet and walk around the Pagoda Forest; arrive fifteen minutes early for the martial arts performance to secure a good seat.

Tips: Please keep quiet and dress neatly when entering the temple. Generally, do not take photos or touch the ritual instruments inside the halls, and offer merit voluntarily. Visitors generally report that the martial arts performance is most popular with families, while the Pagoda Forest and the First Patriarch Temple are often overlooked. Note that the attraction is relatively commercialized; ask prices in advance for vegetarian meals and surrounding consumption. In practical terms, during long trips, the greatest worry is dehydration, so carry a water bottle and drink small amounts frequently; on the first night in highland or mountainous areas, avoid washing your hair or bathing too long to give your body some time to adapt.

Day 2: Only Henan

Immerse yourself all day in 'Only Henan·Theatrical Fantasy City,' watching multiple performances consecutively according to the schedule, understanding the suffering and harvest of the Central Plains through the imagery of wheat fields; have lunch in the park at noon, and return after watching the main performance in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Only Henan. 'Only Henan·Theatrical Fantasy City,' located in Zhongmu, Zhengzhou, is a giant theater settlement built with rammed earth. Through more than twenty theaters and nearly a hundred performances, it presents the suffering, harvest, and resilience of Central Plains civilization. The main theaters' productions, such as 'Fantasy City,' 'Train Station,' and 'Li Family Village,' are highly regarded, while the smaller theaters are each uniquely creative, with wheat field imagery running throughout. It is a phenomenal landmark of Henan cultural tourism. This is not a traditional attraction but an immersive cultural experience. My understanding is that you should reserve a whole day, plan the main performance first, and then fit in the smaller theaters; book tickets in advance through official channels and check the performance schedule carefully, as popular shows often sell out.

Tips: The canyon trail is close to water and cliffs; do not climb over railings or play in dangerous areas, and watch children closely. Tourists generally feel that the immersive experience of the Theatrical Fantasy City is popular with young people, but tickets are expensive and it is time-consuming. It is recommended to focus on the main theaters and reserve at least half a day. Considering practical circumstances, be punctual, arrive five to ten minutes early for gatherings; it is better for people to wait for the bus than for the bus to wait for people, so as not to make everyone wait for you.

Day 3: Mount Song

Set off early from the hotel straight to Mount Song. First, listen to the tour guide explain the background and highlights, then explore at your own pace and take additional photos at spots that interest you. After lunch, rest a little, and return to the hotel in the evening to conserve energy for the next day.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights in the itinerary is Mount Song. Mount Song is the Central Peak of the Five Great Mountains, mainly located in Dengfeng City, divided into the Taishi and Shaoshi Mountains. The main peak, Junji Peak, has an elevation of approximately 1,492 meters. Its uniqueness lies in the coexistence of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism on the same mountain for a thousand years: Songyang Academy was an important center for Neo-Confucianism during the Song Dynasty, and the well-known story of 'Standing in the Snow at Cheng's Gate' is said to have happened here; Zhongyue Temple is one of the largest and best-preserved temple complexes among the Five Great Mountains; the Astronomical Observation Platform in Gaocheng Town, built under the supervision of Guo Shoujing during the Yuan Dynasty, is one of the oldest surviving astronomical observatories. In 2010, the historical building complex representing 'The Center of Heaven and Earth,' including Songyang Academy, Zhongyue Temple, Songyue Temple Pagoda, Shaolin Temple Permanent Residence, Pagoda Forest, Chuzu Temple, and the Astronomical Observation Platform, was listed as a World Heritage Site. My understanding is that on the first day, you shouldn’t try to see too much—first visit the academy and Zhongyue Temple to understand the ritual system of 'The Center of Heaven and Earth,' and save your energy for hiking later; if time permits, in the evening, go to the Shaoshi Mountain's Sanhuang Fort plank road to watch the sunset, which is the most photogenic part of the entire trip.

Friendly Tips: Many places on the mountain paths are slippery. When going downhill, especially pay attention to shifting your center of gravity back and slowing your pace; knee protection gear can be useful. Visitors generally feedback that most people think Mount Song is worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide’s explanation, and leave time for the details that move you the most and the spots that take the best photos. Considering actual conditions, when taking pictures, don’t focus only on the shot; pay attention to your feet and surroundings, and be sure to stand securely at the edges of viewing platforms and plank roads.
