Day 1: Shaolin Temple

Today's trip, from the mountain gate to the Sutra Pavilion, involves careful observation along the way, focusing on the solemnity of the Pagoda Forest and the stunning martial arts performance; in the afternoon, visit the surrounding area, and in the evening, check into the hotel.

Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes the following attractions. Located at the foot of Wuru Peak on Mount Shaoshi in Dengfeng, it was first built in the 19th year of the Taihe period of the Northern Wei Dynasty (495 AD). It is both a patriarchal temple of Chan Buddhism and the birthplace of Shaolin martial arts, with a history of more than 1,500 years. The core highlights are concentrated in three areas: the Permanent Resident Courtyard along the central axis, with the Mountain Gate, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Sutra Pavilion, and Lixue Pavilion; the Pagoda Forest, the largest existing ancient pagoda complex in China, with over 200 brick and stone tomb pagodas from the Tang, Song, and Qing Dynasties, each corresponding to a high-ranking monk; and the Bodhidharma Cave on Wuru Peak, which is said to be where Bodhidharma meditated facing the wall for nine years. The martial arts hall hosts regular Shaolin martial arts performances daily, showcasing authentic skills in fists, weapons, and qigong. My understanding is that you should first walk along the central axis with the guide and then take a closer look on your own; in the Pagoda Forest, maintain silence and walk around the pagodas; for the martial arts performance, arrive fifteen minutes in advance to get a good seat.

Tips: The temple has many stone steps and thresholds; do not step on the thresholds. When worshipping the Buddha, line up in order and avoid pushing. Visitors generally find the martial arts performance most enjoyable for families with children, while the Pagoda Forest and First Patriarch Temple are often overlooked. Note that the scenic area is clearly commercialized, so inquire about the price of vegetarian meals and surrounding expenses in advance. Considering practical circumstances, be punctual, arrive five to ten minutes early for gatherings. It is better for people to wait for the vehicle than for the vehicle to wait for people; do not keep everyone waiting for you.

Day 2: Mount Song

Assemble in the morning and depart for Mount Song. Follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions along the primary route, covering all the highlights, and allow sufficient time for photography and rest. At noon, enjoy a local specialty meal, then continue exploring in the afternoon. In the evening, check into the hotel to rest and prepare for the next day's itinerary.

Attraction Introduction: A major highlight arranged in the itinerary is Mount Song. Mount Song is the Central Peak among the Five Great Mountains, primarily located in Dengfeng City, consisting of the Taishi and Shaoshi mountains, with the main peak, Junji Peak, reaching an elevation of approximately 1,492 meters. Its uniqueness lies in the coexistence of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism on the same mountain for over a thousand years: Songyang Academy was a prominent center of Neo-Confucianism during the Song Dynasty, and the famous story of "Chengmen Lixue" happened here; Zhongyue Temple is one of the largest and best-preserved temple complexes among the Five Great Mountains; the Astronomical Observatory in Gaocheng Town, built under the supervision of Guo Shoujing in the Yuan Dynasty, is one of the oldest existing astronomical observation structures. In 2010, the "Center of Heaven and Earth" historical building complex, represented by Songyang Academy, Zhongyue Temple, Songyue Temple Pagoda, Shaolin Temple Permanent Abbey, Pagoda Forest, Chuzu Ancestral Temple, and the Astronomical Observatory, was inscribed on the World Heritage List. My understanding is that on the first day, there is no need to rush—first visit the academy and Zhongyue Temple to understand the ceremonial framework of the "Center of Heaven and Earth" and save energy for the mountain climb later; if time permits, go to the Shaoshi Mountain Sanhuang Village plank road in the evening to watch the sunset, which is the most photogenic part of the whole trip.

Warm Tips: There are many slippery sections on the mountain paths, especially when going downhill, so pay attention to shifting your center of gravity backward and slow down your steps. Knee guards can be useful. Tourist feedback generally indicates that most visitors feel Mount Song is worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide’s explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the most photogenic spots. Considering the actual situation, when taking photos, do not focus solely on getting the perfect shot; pay attention to your footing and the surrounding environment. Make sure to stand securely at viewing platforms and plank road edges.

Day 3: Free activities

Early in the morning, enter Guoliang Village, take advantage of the morning light to walk along the cliff-hanging road, and feel the shock of tunnels carved into the cliff; in the afternoon, enjoy free activities, you can explore Wanxian Mountain Danfen Gorge, and return in the evening.

Friendly reminder: On free activity days, taking a taxi or walking is convenient. Check the route to your destination in advance, and mark the shops and attractions you want to visit on a map. Tourists generally report that most visitors use free activity days to sleep in, then go sightseeing, eat, and take photos at a relaxed pace. Considering the actual situation, be mindful of time, arrive five to ten minutes early for gathering; it is better for people to wait for the vehicle than the vehicle to wait for people, don't make everyone wait for you alone.
