Day 1: Baiyun Mountain

Today's Baiyun Mountain vacation trip includes taking the cable car and sightseeing shuttle to connect Yuhuang Peak, Jiulong Waterfall, and the Alpine Peony Garden, with a relaxed pace; the afternoon is free time, and the evening is for rest.

Attraction Introduction: This stop is Baiyun Mountain. Baiyun Mountain is located in the Funiu Mountains in Song County. At Yuhuang Peak, you can observe the sunrise over the sea of clouds. With high forest coverage and abundant negative oxygen ions, it is a natural oxygen bar. Within the scenic area, Jiulong Waterfall and the Alpine Peony Garden each have their own characteristics. It is a rare high-altitude resort-type scenic spot in Henan, suitable for summer cooling and autumn leaf viewing. You can take the cable car or sightseeing bus to connect the points. The mountaintop has wide views and misty clouds, resembling a fairyland. My understanding is that visiting in summer to avoid the heat is most worthwhile, as the coolness in the mountains contrasts sharply with the city’s intense heat. Getting up early to climb Yuhuang Peak to see the sunrise over the sea of clouds requires some luck, but even if you don’t see the sunrise, the mountain scenery in the morning mist is beautiful enough.

Tips: The mountain paths have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. For those with limited mobility, it is recommended to take the cable car up and down. Tourists generally report that most visitors believe Baiyun Mountain is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide's commentary, and reserve time for the details that touch you the most and the best photo spots. Considering the actual situation, the biggest problem with guided tours is rushing through attractions. Listening to the explanation is the essence. The cultural stories behind each scenic spot are often more memorable than photos, so ask the guide on the spot if you don’t understand something.

Day 2: Longmen Grottoes

In the morning, head to Longmen Grottoes, carefully view the Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple along the Yihe River trail from the West Mountain Grottoes, then cross the bridge to the East Mountain Worship Terrace for a panoramic view; at noon, enjoy a Luoyang water banquet, and in the afternoon visit Xiangshan Temple and Baiyuan, returning to the hotel in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliffs along both sides of the Yihe River in the south of Luoyang city, with construction continuing since Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang. It went through several dynasties including Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. Currently, there are more than 2,300 cave niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 stone inscriptions and epitaphs preserved. The most breathtaking is the Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple, over seventeen meters tall, with a full face and compassionate eyes, said to be modeled on Empress Wu Zetian, representing the pinnacle of Tang Dynasty stone carving art. Together with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Yungang in Datong, it is known as one of China's three major grottoes and is also a World Heritage Site. When visiting, walk south along the Yihe River trail from the West Mountain Grottoes; Bin Yang Three Caves, Wanfo Cave, and Lotus Cave each have their highlights. Crossing the bridge to the East Mountain Worship Terrace offers a full panoramic view. My suggestion is to first see the main caves of the West Mountain in the morning and admire the Buddha when it's less crowded, then go to the East Mountain Terrace in the afternoon for distant views—the light and angles are best for photographs. Walking along both sides of the Yihe River requires retracing your steps, so a pair of comfortable shoes can save a lot of effort.

Tips: UV rays are strong at the grotto scenic area, so bring a sun hat and sunscreen on sunny days. The route is long, so remember to stay hydrated. Most visitors report that the Vairocana Buddha is the most impressive, and the sunset at West Mountain offers the best lighting for photos. Walking along both sides of the Yihe River requires retracing your steps, so wear comfortable shoes and allow about half a day. If you want authentic food, go deeper into the alleys—the lines at the main entrance are long and the taste is average. For local specialties, compare prices after asking; local supermarkets often offer more authentic products.

Day 3: White Horse Temple

Arrive early in the morning at White Horse Temple, take advantage of the morning light to quietly explore among the red walls and cypresses, focusing on Qiyun Pagoda and the two foreign-style Buddhist halls; in the afternoon, enjoy free activities and you can take additional photos along the central axis, then return to the hotel in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: A highlight arranged in the itinerary is White Horse Temple, which is located in the east of Luoyang city. It was originally built during the Yongping period of the Eastern Han Dynasty to commemorate the White Horse carrying Buddhist scriptures and the initial transmission of Buddhism to central China. It is revered as 'China’s First Ancient Temple' and is the first government-established temple built after Buddhism was introduced to China. Inside the temple, Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, the Great Buddha Hall, and the Hall of Heavenly Kings are laid out along the central axis, with incense burning continuously among the red walls and green cypresses for over two thousand years. It is worth mentioning that there are also foreign-style Buddhist halls built with donations from countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, and India, presenting a unique landscape that reflects both the eastward transmission and return flow of Buddhist culture. My understanding is that upon entering the temple, you should first visit the main halls along the central axis, then go around the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, and finally visit the foreign-style Buddhist halls on the sides to experience cultural integration; coming in the early morning when there are fewer people and the sunlight shines on the red walls and ancient cypresses is most poetic and also allows you to avoid the peak of tour groups.

Tips: There are many incense stalls around the temple, so buy incense as needed and spend rationally. Visitors generally report that the foreign-style Buddhist halls (Thai/Myanmar/Indian courtyards) are highly photogenic and generally considered more spacious than expected; note that the international temple area requires quite a bit of walking, so save some energy. Considering your actual situation, allocate your physical strength, doing the main highlights in the morning when you are fresh and slowing down in the afternoon, so you don’t exhaust yourself on the first day and have no energy for the following days.
