Jiaozuo 8-Day Tour: Scenic Area & Longmen Grottoes
Jiaozuo 8-day tour covering Scenic Area and Longmen Grottoes and Baiyun Mountain. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Jiaozuo
In the morning, head to Longmen Grottoes, follow the Yihe Trail from the Xishan Grottoes to closely admire the Fengxian Temple Vairocana Buddha, then cross the bridge to the Dongshan Buddha Platform for a panoramic view; At noon, enjoy Luoyang water feast, visit Xiangshan Temple and Baiyuan in the afternoon, and return to the hotel in the evening.
Attraction introduction: Today's itinerary includes Jiaozuo attractions, which include Yuntai Mountain World Geopark, the red cliffs of Hongshi Gorge, the waters of Dan Cliff, the flying waterfalls of Tanpu Gorge, and the sunrise over Zhuyu Peak. It's the ultimate collection of the essence of Taihang's landscape. My understanding is that hiking should be done within your means. Cable cars should be saved if possible, but those with knee problems shouldn't push themselves to hiking. The scenery is not about forcing yourself.
Friendly reminder: The climbing route has many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. Those with mobility difficulties are advised to take the cable car up and down. Visitors generally report that Jiaozuo is worth a special trip. It's recommended to slow down, follow the guide's explanation, and save time for the most impressive details and the best camera spots. Based on actual conditions, don't just focus on taking photos; pay attention to your footing and surroundings. Be sure to stand firmly at the edge of the viewing platform and boardwalk.
Day 2: Longmen Grottoes
Early in the morning, climb Baiyun Mountain, first reach Yuhuang Peak to wait for the sea of clouds and sunrise, then visit Jiulong Waterfall; In the afternoon, walk along the forest trail to escape the summer heat, enjoy the autumn leaves, and return at dusk.
Attraction introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes, carved into the cliff faces south of Luoyang on both banks of the Yi River. Since Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang, construction has continued through the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang dynasties. There are currently over 2,300 cave niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscriptions and inscriptions. The most impressive is the Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple, standing over 17 meters tall, with a plump face and kind-looking eyes. Legend has it that it was carved after Wu Zetian's appearance and represents the pinnacle of Tang dynasty stone carving art. Along with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong's Yungang Caves, it is known as one of China's three great grottoes and a World Cultural Heritage site. When touring, head south along the Yi River trail from the Xishan Grottoes, where Binyang Three Caves, Ten Thousand Buddha Caves, and Lotus Cave each have highlights. Cross the bridge to the Dongshan Buddha Worship Platform for a panoramic view. My understanding is that in the morning, first visit the main cave of Xishan and admire the Big Buddha while there are fewer people; in the afternoon, go to the Dongshan Viewing Platform for the best lighting and angle; If you need to walk backward along both banks of the Yi River, a pair of comfortable shoes can save you a lot of effort.
Friendly reminder: UV rays in the grotto scenic area are strong. On sunny days, bring a sun hat and sunscreen, and remember to stay hydrated since the route is long. Visitors generally report that most find the Vairocana Buddha the most breathtaking, and the sunset at Xishan offers the best photos; If you need to walk back along both banks of the Yi River, it's recommended to wear comfortable shoes and reserve half a day. Depending on the situation, it's best to take photos early or late—the morning is quiet and soft, the golden glow at dusk is best for photos, and the noon peak is cramped and flat, so it's more cost-effective to rest.
Day 3: Baiyun Mountain
Today's Longtan Grand Canyon waterside trip focuses on Liubutan and Yixiantian to experience the "canyon's finest" red rock landforms; Rest in the afternoon, check in at night.
Attraction introduction: This stop is Baiyun Mountain. Baiyun Mountain is located deep in the heart of Funiu Mountain in Song County. Yuhuang Peak offers a sea of clouds and sunrise, with high forest coverage and abundant negative oxygen ions, making it a natural oxygen bar. Within the scenic area, Jiulong Waterfall and the alpine peony garden each have their own unique features. Summer retreats and autumn leaf viewing make it one of the few high-altitude resort scenic spots in Henan. Taking the cable car or scenic shuttle connects various points, with wide views from the summit and swirling clouds and mist, like a fairyland. My understanding is that summer is the best time to escape the heat, as the coolness in the mountains contrasts sharply with the city's scorching heat; Climbing Yuhuang Peak early to watch the sea of clouds and sunrise requires a bit of luck, but even if you can't see the sunrise, the mountain scenery in the morning mist is still beautiful.
Friendly reminder: There are many slippery parts on mountain roads, so be sure to shift your center of gravity and slow down downhill. Prepare a pair of knee pads. Visitors generally agree that Baiyun Mountain is worth a special trip. It's recommended to slow down and follow the guide to listen to the explanations, saving time for the most impressive details and the best camera angles. Based on actual conditions, the biggest concern on long trips is dehydration. Carry a water bottle and drink small amounts frequently; On the first night in plateau or mountainous areas, don't wash your hair or take too long a bath to allow your body some time to adjust.
