Day 1: Longmen Grottoes

Today's visit is to Longmen Grottoes. It's recommended to allow at least half a day: you can link the main West Mountain Cave, the East Mountain Viewing Platform, and Xiangshan Temple White Garden in one line, and follow the guide to understand the stories of the Northern Wei and flourishing Tang periods behind the stone carvings; return in the evening to rest.

Attraction introduction: One highlight arranged in the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliff walls along both banks of the Yi River south of Luoyang city. Construction continued after Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang, spanning several dynasties including Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. There are currently more than 2,300 grottoes, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscription plaques. The most spectacular is the Vairocana Buddha of Fenshansi Temple, over 17 meters tall, with a full face and compassionate eyes, said to be carved in the likeness of Wu Zetian. It represents the peak of Tang dynasty stone carving art. Together with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang, it is known as one of China's three major grottoes and is also a World Cultural Heritage site. When visiting, start from the West Mountain Grotto along the Yi River trail heading south—Binyang Three Caves, Wanfo Cave, and Lotus Cave each have their highlights. Crossing the bridge to the East Mountain Viewing Platform provides a full view. My understanding is to see the main West Mountain Cave in the morning, enjoy the Buddha when there are fewer people, and go to the East Mountain Viewing Platform in the afternoon for a distant view—the lighting and angles are perfect for photos. You will need to retrace your steps along both banks of the Yi River, so a comfortable pair of shoes saves a lot of effort.

Tips: The grottoes are mostly built on cliffs. Maintain distance from the cliff while sightseeing, hold onto the railings, and take care of the elderly and children. Tourists generally feedback that most find the Vairocana Buddha the most impressive, the West Mountain has the best lighting for photos at sunset; retracing your steps along the Yi River is required, so comfortable shoes and half a day are recommended. Depending on your situation, if you want authentic food, go deeper into the alleys, as lines at the main entrance can be long and the taste is average; always ask for prices and compare before buying specialties, local supermarkets often have more authentic items.

Day 2: Jiguan Cave

Morning tourJiguan Cave, visit the karst cave to see the varied stalactites; have a nearby lunch at noon, and in the afternoon you can visitLongtan Grand Canyon as well, one cave and one gorge complement each other, returning in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Jiguan Cave attraction. Jiguan Cave is a karst cave in Luanchuan, with stalactites in all kinds of shapes. Stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone flowers under the lights transform into gorgeous colors. The cave maintains a constant temperature all year round, warm in winter and cool in summer. Attractions inside the cave are densely packed, changing with every step. With the explanation, you can understand the wondrous geology shaped over hundreds of millions of years. Together with Longtan Grand Canyon, one cave and one gorge complement each other, forming a classic geological sightseeing route in Western Henan. My understanding is that when entering the cave, remember to follow the guide; the formation and naming of the stalactites are very interesting, and you may easily miss the highlights if you explore alone. The cave floor is slippery, and some areas are low, so wear anti-slip shoes and watch your head.

Tips: Mountain paths have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear anti-slip sports shoes. Those with leg or foot difficulties are advised to use the cable car. Visitors generally give feedback that most of them believe Jiguan Cave is worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide’s explanation, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Based on your actual situation, save some energy. Walk the highlights in the morning when you are fresh, slow down in the afternoon, do not exhaust yourself on the first day, or you will have no energy for the following days.

Day 3: Only Henan

Early in the morning, enter the Theater Fantasy City, first watch the main theater performances, then hop around the smaller theaters; in the afternoon, freely choose the shows to immerse yourself in Central Plains civilization, and return in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Theater Fantasy City. 'Theater Fantasy City' is located in Zhongmu and is a massive theatrical settlement built with rammed earth. Through more than twenty theaters and nearly a hundred performances, it presents the hardships, harvests, and resilience of Central Plains civilization. Main theater shows like 'Fantasy City,' 'Train Station,' and 'Li Family Village' have excellent reputations, while the smaller theaters each have unique creativity, with the imagery of wheat fields running throughout. It is a phenomenal cultural tourism landmark in the area. This is not a traditional attraction but an immersive cultural experience. My understanding is that you should dedicate a full day, first schedule the main theater shows, then intersperse smaller theater visits; book tickets in advance through official channels and check performance schedules carefully, as popular shows often sell out.

Tips: The canyon trails are by the water and cliffs, do not climb over railings, do not play with water in dangerous areas, and watch your accompanying children. Visitors generally report that Theater Fantasy City’s immersive experience appeals to young people, but tickets are expensive and it is time-consuming; it is advised to focus on the main theaters and reserve at least half a day. Take the actual situation into account, respect local customs, dress appropriately when entering religious sites, and do not point at things casually. A simple greeting can exchange for goodwill.
