Luoyang 5-Day Tour: Wangcheng Park & Laojun Mountain
Luoyang 5-day tour covering Wangcheng Park and Laojun Mountain and Chongdu Valley. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Wangcheng Park
Set off from the hotel early in the morning straight to Wangcheng Park. First, listen to the guide explain the background and highlights, then explore freely at a leisurely pace and take extra photos according to your interests. After lunch, take a short rest, and return to the hotel in the evening to conserve energy for the next day.
Introduction to the Attraction: One of the main highlights on the itinerary is Wangcheng Park. Wangcheng Park is located in Luoyang and is named after its location on the ruins of the Eastern Zhou royal city. It is one of the main venues for the annual Chinese Luoyang Peony Culture Festival and is also the urban park most familiar to the citizens of Luoyang. Every April, famous peonies such as Yao Huang, Wei Zi, and Zhao Fen bloom in competition, creating a magnificent display of colorful flowers. The park also preserves the ruins of the Zhou royal city and a zoo, combining historical significance with recreational functions, making it a classic destination for visitors to check out the "Peony Flower City." In my opinion, if you come during the peony season (April), this place must be included in your must-visit list. In the morning, there are fewer people, and the dew-covered peonies are at their most delicate; outside the flowering season, it is more suitable for a relaxed stroll.
Tips: Popular attractions in the park have long queues; upon entering, first get a map and show schedule to prioritize must-see attractions. Visitors generally feel that Wangcheng Park is worth visiting specifically, so it is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide’s explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Be mindful of the schedule according to your actual situation, arrive at the meeting point five to ten minutes early, and it's better for others to wait for the coach than for the coach to wait for you; don’t make everyone wait for you.
Day 2: Laojun Mountain
Today's deep tour: After taking the cable car up the mountain, focus on the Golden Summit, Ten-Mile Painted Screen, and the Glass Viewing Platform, and follow the guide to learn about Taoist culture and the geology of the Funiu Mountains. In the afternoon, descend the mountain to rest and recharge for the next day.
Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights of the itinerary is the Golden Summit, located in Luanchuan County. It is the main peak of the Funiu Mountains and a famous Taoist mountain, traditionally known as the place where Laozi, the founder of Taoism, retreated for cultivation. The Golden Summit Taoist temple complex stands atop a peak over 2,000 meters above sea level, with golden tiled roofs, red walls, and rolling clouds, earning the reputation of 'traveling far for a magnificent feast, to behold the world's splendor in one glance.' The Ten-Mile Painted Screen is the essence of the whole journey; this high-altitude walkway suspended on a cliff offers changing views with each step, encompassing the peak forest, sea of clouds, and sunrise. You can ascend the mountain by a two-stage cable car; on clear days you can watch the sea of clouds and sunrise from the summit, while in winter it is a popular snow-viewing spot in the Central Plains. My understanding is that it is essential to take the cable car early to secure the best lighting for the Golden Summit and Ten-Mile Painted Screen; with strong winds and low temperatures at the top, a windbreaker and thermos are a must, and if you are afraid of heights, don’t force yourself onto the Glass Viewing Platform.
Friendly Tips: The mountain area has a large temperature difference between morning and evening, and there are strong winds at the summit, so a windproof jacket and warm layers are necessary. Visitors generally agree that the sea of clouds and sunrise at the Golden Summit are the main highlights, and many even stay overnight at the summit to catch dawn. Remember that there are big temperature differences at the top and long queues for the cable car, so during peak seasons it is crucial to start early. According to actual conditions, when taking photos, don’t just focus on getting good shots—pay attention to your footing and surroundings. Be sure to hold on and stand safely at the edges of viewing platforms and walkways.
Day 3: Chongdugou
Morning tour, along Jinji River and Dicui River to see bamboo forests and waterfalls; at noon, taste wild vegetables and farmhouse meals; in the afternoon, stroll through villages in western Henan, enjoying the coolness of a Jiangnan-style water town.
Attraction introduction: This stop is at Chongdugou, Chongdugou is located in Luanchuan, and is known for its tens of thousands of acres of bamboo forests, cascading waterfalls, and the farming culture of western Henan. It is one of the few 'Jiangnan water town' style summer resorts in Henan. The scenic area is divided into two parts: Jinji River and Dicui River. Jinji River is famous for its waterfalls, with splashing water and a refreshing atmosphere; Dicui River has continuous bamboo forests, offering an expanse of greenery when walking through. Here, visitors can stay in farmhouse accommodations, taste wild vegetables, and experience authentic life in western Henan villages. The pace is slow, making it especially suitable for family leisure tours and summer vacations. My understanding is to slow down and not rush through the sights—walking in the bamboo forest and sitting by the creek is the proper way to enjoy Chongdugou; visiting in summer is the most comfortable, so cool that you won’t want to leave.
Tips: Signal may be poor in the canyon, so arrange meeting points with your guide in advance and do not act alone. Visitors generally report that most believe Chongdugou is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide's explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best spots for photos. According to the situation, for photography, it's best early in the morning or late in the evening—few people and soft lighting in the morning, golden glow at sunset is great for pictures, while midday light is strong and crowded, so it's better to rest then.
