Day 1: Sui-Tang Luoyang City

Depart early from the hotel and head straight to Sui-Tang Luoyang City. First, listen to the tour guide explain the background and highlights, then enjoy a leisurely walk and take additional photos according to your interests. After lunch, take a short rest, and in the evening, return to the hotel to save energy for the next day.

Attraction Introduction: This stop brings us to Sui-Tang Luoyang City. Sui-Tang Luoyang City National Heritage Park centers around Yingtian Gate, Mingtang, and Tiantang, restoring the grandeur of the palaces of the Tang Dynasty's "Divine Capital" Luoyang. Yingtian Gate, the main southern gate of Sui-Tang Luoyang City, is majestic; climbing the tower offers a view of the central axis, and at night there is a stunning light show. Mingtang was the "Palace of Myriad Phenomena" during Wu Zetian's era, and Tiantang is a high tower for worshiping Buddha. The interiors of both buildings replicate the magnificent furnishings of the Tang royal court. Strolling along Jiuzhou Pool is also pleasant, evoking the grandeur of the ancient imperial gardens. This place is closely associated with films and TV series such as "Wu Zetian" and "The Wind Rises in Luoyang," making it one of the most popular Tang culture landmarks in Luoyang in recent years. My understanding is that visiting at night is a must—when the lights first come on, the illumination of Yingtian Gate and Mingtang Tiantang shows the true appearance of the "Divine Capital." By day, enjoy the palace furnishings, and at night, the light show—two different experiences in one day.

Tips: Popular ancient city landmarks are crowded on holidays, so try to visit during off-peak times or book tickets in advance. Visitors generally feedback that most people feel Sui-Tang Luoyang City is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the tour guide, and save time for the details that touch you most and the best photo spots. Depending on your actual situation, rushing through with a tour group is the worst; listening to the guide is the essence. The cultural stories behind each attraction are often more memorable than photos, so ask the guide on the spot if you don’t understand something.

Day 2: Wangcheng Park

Today's theme is Wangcheng Park. Avoid peak crowds by entering the park during off-peak hours and follow the recommended route for an in-depth visit; have a nearby local-style lunch at noon, enjoy free activities in the afternoon or join the guide for additional visits, and stay at a hotel in the evening to rest.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Wangcheng Park. Wangcheng Park is located in Luoyang. It is named because it is situated on the ruins of the Eastern Zhou Royal City and has been one of the main venues for the annual Chinese Luoyang Peony Culture Festival. It is also the city park most familiar to the citizens of Luoyang. Every April, famous peonies such as Yao Huang, Wei Zi, and Zhao Fen bloom in the park, creating a spectacular array of colors. The park also preserves the ruins of the Zhou Royal City and a zoo, combining historical depth with leisure functions. It is a classic spot for tourists to check in at the 'Peony Flower City.' In my understanding, if you visit during the peony season (April), you must include this place as a must-visit; early in the morning, there are fewer people, and the peonies are most charming with morning dew. During the off-season, it is more suitable for a leisurely walk.

Friendly Tips: When visiting the park with children, be mindful of the risk of getting separated. Agree on a meeting point in advance and prepare contact information cards for the kids. Visitors generally feedback that most believe Wangcheng Park is worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide for explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Depending on the situation, for authentic local food, go deeper into the alleys; the queues at the main entrance often have average-tasting food. For local specialties, ask the price first and compare; local supermarkets are often more reliable.

Day 3: Longmen Grottoes

In the morning, head to Longmen Grottoes and follow the Yihe River trail from the Western Hills Caves, taking a close look at the Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple, then cross the bridge to the Eastern Hills Worship Platform to view the panoramic scenery; at noon, enjoy a Luoyang water banquet, in the afternoon tour Xiangshan Temple and Baiyuan, and return to the hotel in the evening.

Attraction introduction: A major highlight of the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliffs on both sides of the Yihe River in the south of Luoyang city, and construction continued from the time Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei dynasty moved the capital to Luoyang, spanning multiple dynasties including the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. Currently, there are more than 2,300 niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscriptions and epitaphs. The most stunning is the Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple, over 17 meters tall, with a full face and kind eyes, reportedly modeled after Empress Wu Zetian, representing the pinnacle of Tang dynasty stone carving art. Together with the Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang Grottoes, it is considered one of China’s three major grottoes and a World Cultural Heritage site. During the visit, walk south along the Yihe River trail from the Western Hills Caves, where Bin Yang Three Caves, Ten Thousand Buddhas Cave, and Lotus Cave each have their highlights. Crossing the bridge to the Eastern Hills Worship Platform offers a panoramic view. My suggestion is to visit the main cave in the Western Hills first in the morning, taking advantage of smaller crowds to appreciate the Buddha in detail, then go to the Eastern Hills Platform in the afternoon for a long-distance view, which provides the best lighting and angles. Walking along both sides of the Yihe River requires retracing your steps, so a comfortable pair of shoes will save a lot of effort.

Tips: Visiting the grottoes involves walking and climbing stairs, so it is recommended to wear non-slip, comfortable shoes and travel light. Pay attention to your footing along both sides of the Yihe River. Most tourists report that the Vairocana Buddha leaves the deepest impression, and the Western Hills have the best light for photos at sunset. Walking along both sides of the Yihe River requires retracing your steps, so wear comfortable shoes and allow half a day. According to actual conditions, manage your energy: do the main highlights in the morning when you are fresh and slow down in the afternoon, so you don’t overexert yourself on the first day and have no energy for the following days.
