Kaifeng 4-Day Tour: Wangcheng Park & Erlitou Site
Kaifeng 4-day tour covering Wangcheng Park and Erlitou Site and Wanxianshan. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Wangcheng Park
Assemble in the morning and set off for Wangcheng Park, following the main route with the guide to visit all the key highlights, leaving ample time for photos and rest; enjoy a local specialty meal at noon, continue exploring in the afternoon, and check into the hotel in the evening to rest and prepare for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Wangcheng Park. Wangcheng Park is located in Luoyang, and it is named because it sits atop the ruins of the Eastern Zhou royal city. It has been one of the main venues of the annual Chinese Luoyang Peony Culture Festival and is also the city park most familiar to the citizens of Luoyang. Every April, famous peonies such as Yao Huang, Wei Zi, and Zhao Fen bloom in succession, creating a magnificent display; the park also preserves the Zhou royal city ruins and a zoo, combining historical depth with leisure functions, making it a classic spot for tourists to check out the 'Peony Flower City.' My understanding is that if you visit during the peony season (April), you must consider this a must-see spot. Early in the morning, there are fewer people, and the dew-covered peonies are at their most beautiful; outside the flower season, it is more suitable for a leisurely stroll.
Tips: Popular attractions in the park often have long queues, so get a map and performance schedule first and prioritize the must-visit spots. Visitors generally feedback that most feel Wangcheng Park is worth visiting specifically; it is suggested to slow down, follow the guide to listen to explanations, and leave time for the details that move you the most and the best photo spots. In reality, the biggest risk with group tours is rushing through places; the explanations are the essence, and the cultural stories behind each attraction are often more memorable than the photos. If you don't understand something, ask the guide on the spot.
Day 2: Erlitou
Set off from the hotel early in the morning straight to Erlitou, first listen to the tour guide explain the background and highlights, then explore at leisure and retake photos at spots of interest; after lunch, take a short rest and return to the hotel in the evening to conserve energy for the next day.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Erlitou attractions. The Erlitou site is located in Luoyang Yanshi and is praised by scholars as 'the earliest China.' It is a large urban site from the mid-to-late Xia Dynasty, and artifacts such as turquoise dragon-shaped objects, bronze jue, and bronze ding have been unearthed, revealing the appearance of the first royal capital of Hua Xia. The turquoise dragon-shaped object is made of more than two thousand turquoise pieces and is hailed as the 'First Dragon of Hua Xia,' serving as important evidence of dragon worship in China. The Erlitou Site Museum presents the archaeological site vividly and is an indispensable stop for studying the origins of Chinese civilization. My understanding is that before visiting, it is better to first learn about the scholarly debates surrounding the 'Xia Capital,' then view the exhibits for a deeper understanding; the museum's display is meticulously arranged and worth taking time to appreciate.
Tips: There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains, and the wind is strong at the top, so a windproof jacket and warm inner layers are very necessary. Visitors generally report that most feel Erlitou is worth a dedicated trip. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the tour guide’s explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Based on practical experience, for authentic food, venture further into the alleys as the queues at the main scenic entrance are long and the taste is average; for local specialties, inquire about prices and compare, as local supermarkets often offer more genuine products.
Day 3: Wanxian Mountain
Today, with Wanxian Mountain as the theme, avoid peak crowds and enter the park during off-peak hours, following the recommended route for an in-depth tour; have a nearby lunch featuring local flavors around noon, enjoy free activities or join the guide for additional sightseeing in the afternoon, and check into the hotel in the evening to rest.
Attraction Introduction: One highlight arranged in the itinerary is Wanxian Mountain. The Wanxian Mountain scenic area is located deep in Huixian Taihang Mountains, including Guoliang Cliff Road and Nanping Danfeng Valley. Here, red rock cliffs intertwine with soaring waterfalls and clear pools, making it one of the most representative landscape galleries in the Taihang Mountains. It is famous for being a filming location for several movies and TV shows. Attractions like Guoliang Village, Tianchi, and the watchtowers form an impressive Taihang hiking route. The summer temperature is pleasant, and it is a place close to Zhengzhou and Luoyang where you can experience the Taihang scenery firsthand. My understanding is that the hike involves a lot of walking and many steps, so be sure to wear non-slip shoes; pay attention to passing vehicles on the cliff-hanging road section, and the red rock cliffs look best in photos during early morning and late afternoon light.
Tips: There are many slippery sections on mountain paths, especially downhill, so keep your center of gravity back and slow your steps; consider bringing knee pads. Visitors generally feedback that the cliff-hanging road (Guoliang Tunnel) is the most impressive and photogenic, while the mountain roads often cause motion sickness; it’s advised to bring motion sickness medicine and walk slowly while exploring viewpoints. Based on your actual condition, manage your stamina and leave some reserve; tackle the main highlights in the morning when you are energetic, and slow the pace in the afternoon—don’t overdo it on the first day, or you’ll have no energy for the following days.
Day 4: Return
Transfer to the departure terminal per your booked train or flight; keep travel documents and tickets in your carry-on.
