Day 1: White Horse Temple

Early in the morning, enter White Horse Temple and enjoy a peaceful walk among the red walls and green cypresses in the morning light, focusing on the Qiyun Pagoda and the two exotic Buddhist halls; in the afternoon, enjoy free activities and you can retake photos along the central axis, returning to the hotel in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is White Horse Temple, located in the east of Luoyang city. It was originally built during the Yongping period of the Eastern Han Dynasty to commemorate the White Horse transporting the sutras and the initial spread of Buddhism in the Central Plains. It is revered as the "first ancient temple in China" and is the first government-sponsored temple built after Buddhism was introduced to China. Within the temple, the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, the Great Buddha Hall, and the Heavenly King Hall are arranged along the central axis, with incense burning continuously among the red walls and green cypresses for over two thousand years. It is worth mentioning that the temple also has exotic-style Buddhist halls donated by countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, and India, presenting a unique landscape of the eastward transmission and return flow of Buddhist culture. My understanding is to first visit the main hall along the central axis, then go around to the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, and finally visit the exotic Buddhist halls on both sides to experience cultural integration; arriving early in the morning is ideal, as the morning light on the red walls and ancient cypresses is most atmospheric and it helps avoid the peak of tour groups.

Warm Tips: The temple has many stone steps and thresholds. Do not step on the thresholds when crossing; when worshipping, follow the order and do not push. Visitors generally report that the exotic-style Buddhist halls (Thai/Myanmar/Indian Courtyards) are highly photogenic and are generally perceived as more spacious than expected; note that the international temple area requires a long walk, so save some energy. Depending on your actual situation, distribute your energy wisely: tackle the main attractions in the morning when you are fresh, and slow down in the afternoon; do not exhaust yourself on the first day, or you will have no energy for the following days.

Day 2: Longmen Grottoes

Today's tour is Longmen Grottoes, and it is recommended to allow at least half a day: link together the main caves of West Mountain, the viewing platform of East Mountain, and Baiyuan of Xiangshan Temple along a line, and understand the stories of the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties behind the stone carvings by following the guide; return in the evening to rest.

Attraction Introduction: A highlight arranged in the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliff on both sides of the Yi River in the south of Luoyang City, and continuous construction began since Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang. It went through the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, and several other dynasties. There are currently more than 2,300 caves and niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 steles and inscriptions. The most stunning is the Vairocana Buddha in Fengxian Temple, with a total height of over 17 meters, a full face, and compassionate eyes, said to be carved based on Wu Zetian's appearance, representing the peak of Tang dynasty stone carving art. Along with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Yungang in Datong, it is known as one of China's three major grottoes and is also a world cultural heritage site. When visiting, start from the West Mountain Caves along the Yi River trail heading south; Binyang Three Caves, Ten Thousand Buddha Cave, and Lotus Cave each have points of interest. Cross the bridge to the East Mountain Worshiping Platform for a panoramic view. My understanding is to first see the main caves of West Mountain in the morning, enjoy the Buddha statue while there are fewer people, and in the afternoon, go to the East Mountain viewing platform for a distant view; the lighting and angles are best for photos. Walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so a pair of comfortable shoes can save a lot of effort.

Tips: The grottoes are mostly built on cliffs, so when viewing, keep a distance from the cliff, hold onto the railing, and look after the elderly and children. Visitors generally feedback that most find the Vairocana Buddha the most impressive, the West Mountain offers the best sunset photo light; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and allow half a day. According to actual circumstances, respect local customs, dress appropriately when entering religious places, and do not point arbitrarily; a simple greeting can be met with kindness.

Day 3: Baiyun Mountain

In the morning, take a vehicle up to Baiyun Mountain and climb Yuhuang Peak to see the sea of clouds; have a light meal at the mountain top at noon, then in the afternoon visit Jiulong Waterfall and the High Mountain Peony Garden, breathe in the forest oxygen bar, and descend in the evening to check in.

Scenic spot introduction: This stop is Baiyun Mountain. Baiyun Mountain is located in the heart of Funiu Mountains in Song County. From Yuhuang Peak, you can enjoy the sunrise over the sea of clouds. With high forest coverage and abundant negative oxygen ions, it is a natural large oxygen bar. Within the scenic area, Jiulong Waterfall and the High Mountain Peony Garden each have their own characteristics. It is one of the few high mountain holiday resorts suitable for summer cooling and autumn leaf viewing. You can use the cableway or scenic shuttle bus to connect the spots. The mountaintop has broad views and misty clouds, looking like a fairyland. In my opinion, visiting in summer to escape the heat is most worthwhile, as the coolness of the mountains contrasts sharply with the sweltering city. Waking up early to climb Yuhuang Peak to see the sunrise over the clouds requires a bit of luck, but even if you miss the sunrise, the mountain scenery in the morning fog is beautiful enough.

Tips: The mountain paths have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. Those with mobility issues are recommended to use the cableway. Visitors generally feedback that most believe Baiyun Mountain is worth a special trip. It is suggested to slow down, follow the guide's explanations, and reserve time for the details that touch you most and the best photography spots. Considering the actual situation, the worst thing about group tours is rushing through everything; listening to the guide is the essence. The cultural stories behind each attraction are often more unforgettable than photos, and if you don't understand something, ask the guide on the spot.
