Day 1: Longmen Grottoes

Start early in the morning at [0], take advantage of fewer people to first visit Binyang Three Caves and Lotus Cave, then climb Fengxian Temple to admire the Great Buddha; have lunch nearby at noon, and in the afternoon visit Dongshan Grottoes and Xiangshan Temple, and at sunset take photos along the Yi River, ending a fulfilling day.

Attraction introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is [0]. [0] was carved on the cliff walls along both banks of the Yi River in the south of [2] city, and construction continued since the relocation of the capital to [2] by Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei. It went through several dynasties including Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. There are currently more than 2,300 grottoes, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscription plaques. The most stunning part is the Vairocana Buddha of Fengxian Temple, over seventeen meters high, with a full, serene face and kind eyes, said to have been carved based on Wu Zetian's appearance, representing the pinnacle of Tang Dynasty stone carving art. Along with Dunhuang [1] and Datong Yungang, it is known as one of China's three major grottoes and is also a World Cultural Heritage site. During the visit, start from the West Mountain Grottoes along the Yi River walkway heading south; Binyang Three Caves, Wanfo Cave, and Lotus Cave each have interesting features, and crossing the bridge to the East Mountain Worship Terrace provides a full view. My understanding is to see the main West Mountain grottoes in the morning, appreciating the Great Buddha while there are fewer people. In the afternoon, go to the East Mountain terrace to view from afar, as the light and angles are best for photos; walking along both banks of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so a comfortable pair of shoes saves a lot of effort.

Tips: The grottoes are mostly built on cliffs; maintain distance from the cliff walls and hold onto railings, and take care of the elderly and children. Tourists generally feedback that most find the Vairocana Buddha the most impressive, the West Mountain at sunset provides the best light for photos; walking along both banks of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so comfortable shoes and reserving half a day are recommended. Depending on the situation, the best times for photos are early morning or late afternoon — in the early morning there are fewer people and soft light, and in the late afternoon there is golden light. At noon the light is harsh and the area is crowded, so it's better to rest then.

Day 2: Chongdugou

Today's summer escape trip has a leisurely pace, focusing on the vast bamboo forests and cascading waterfalls; the afternoon is free for your own arrangement, and at night we will stay at a farmhouse to rest.

Attraction Introduction: This stop is at Chongdugou, Chongdugou is located in Luanchuan, famous for its vast bamboo forests, waterfalls, and the farming culture of western Henan. It is one of the few 'Jiangnan water town' style summer leisure destinations in the region. The scenic area is divided into two zones: Jinji River and Dicui River. Jinji River is known for its waterfalls, with splashing and refreshing waters; Dicui River features continuous bamboo forests, offering green scenery as you stroll through. Here you can stay at a farmhouse, try wild mountain vegetables, and experience authentic western Henan village life. The pace is relaxed, making it particularly suitable for family slow travel and summer vacations. My understanding is to slow down the pace, not rush through the attractions—walking in the bamboo forest or sitting by the stream is the right way to enjoy Chongdugou; visiting in summer is the most comfortable, with such a refreshing atmosphere that you won't want to leave.

Tips: The water-related sections of the canyon trail can be slippery. Make sure to wear anti-slip water trekking shoes or sports shoes, and keep valuables like mobile phones waterproof. Tourist feedback generally indicates that most visitors believe Chongdugou is worth a dedicated trip. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide, and leave time for the details that touch you the most and the best photo spots. Considering the actual situation, long trips are prone to dehydration, so carry a water bottle and sip small amounts frequently; on the first night at high altitudes or mountain areas, avoid washing your hair or showering for too long to give your body time to adjust.
