Day 1: Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden

Early in the morning, start by visiting the park, watch the opening performance, then check in along Hongqiao and Bian River, experiencing the Song Dynasty-style marketplace; in the afternoon, enjoy free activities, and you can also visit nearby night markets.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden. Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden is located in Kaifeng, and is a Song culture-themed park built based on Zhang Zeduan's “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” of the Northern Song Dynasty. The park recreates the Rainbow Bridge, Bian River, streets, and taverns from the painting, showcasing the bustling market life of Dongjing Bianliang. There are live performances and folk parades throughout the day. The most famous is the nighttime water live show “The Great Song: Dreams of Tokyo,” which uses lights and visuals to recreate the grandeur of the Northern Song capital. During the day, you can watch the opening ceremony, Bao Gong welcoming guests, and Mr. Wang entertaining marriage proposals, all immersive folk performances. It is also a paradise for hanfu enthusiasts; wearing Song-style hanfu while walking along Hongqiao and Bian River, every photo looks like a classic ancient scene. My understanding is to first get the performance schedule upon entering the park, plan must-see performances and the night show, then leisurely explore and eat; visiting the marketplace during the day is the most immersive, while the night show is an audio-visual feast, worth watching if the budget allows.

Tips: When visiting the park with children, be mindful of the risk of getting separated. Agree on a meeting point in advance and prepare a contact card for the child. Visitors usually say that daytime market visits are the most immersive, while the night show “The Great Song: Dreams of Tokyo” receives mixed reviews; note that performance tickets are relatively expensive, so choose according to your budget. In practical terms, during long trips dehydration is the biggest concern, so carry a water bottle and drink small amounts frequently; in high-altitude or mountainous areas, avoid long showers or washing hair on the first night, giving your body some time to adjust.

Day 2: Shaolin Temple

Today's trip, from the mountain gate to the Sutra Pavilion, involves careful observation along the way, focusing on the solemnity of the Pagoda Forest and the stunning martial arts performance; in the afternoon, visit the surrounding area, and in the evening, check into the hotel.

Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes the following attractions. Located at the foot of Wuru Peak on Shaoshi Mountain in Dengfeng, it was first built in the 19th year of the Taihe period of the Northern Wei Dynasty (495 AD). It is both a patriarchal temple of Chan Buddhism and the birthplace of Shaolin martial arts, with a history of more than 1,500 years. The main highlights are concentrated in three areas: the Changzhu Courtyard along the central axis includes, in order, the mountain gate, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the Sutra Pavilion, and the Lixue Pavilion, with halls and ancient steles laid out in sequence; the Pagoda Forest is the largest ancient pagoda complex in China, with over 200 brick and stone tomb pagodas from the Tang, Song, to Qing dynasties, each corresponding to a revered monk; the Bodhidharma Cave on Wuru Peak is traditionally considered the place where Bodhidharma meditated for nine years. The Martial Arts Hall holds daily scheduled Shaolin martial arts performances, showcasing genuine skills in fists, weapons, and hard qigong. My understanding is to first follow the guide along the central axis, then explore on your own; please maintain quiet when visiting the Pagoda Forest and walk around the pagodas; for the martial arts performance, arrive 15 minutes early to secure a good seat.

Tips: Please keep quiet and dress neatly when entering the temple. Generally, do not take photos or touch the ritual instruments inside the halls, and offer merit as you wish. Visitors often report that the martial arts performance is most popular with families with children, while the Pagoda Forest and the First Patriarch Nunnery are often overlooked on the way; note that commercial activities in the scenic area are obvious, so ask the price before consuming vegetarian meals or other services nearby. Depending on actual circumstances, be punctual; arrive five to ten minutes early for gatherings. It is better for people to wait for the vehicle than for the vehicle to wait for a person—don’t make everyone wait for you.
