Zhengzhou 5-Day Tour: Longmen Grottoes & Scenic Area
Zhengzhou 5-day tour covering Longmen Grottoes and Scenic Area and Millennium City Park. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Longmen Grottoes
Today's tour is Longmen Grottoes, and it is recommended to allow at least half a day: link together the main caves of West Mountain, the viewing platform of East Mountain, and Baiyuan of Xiangshan Temple along a line, and understand the stories of the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties behind the stone carvings by following the guide; return in the evening to rest.
Attraction Introduction: A highlight arranged in the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliff walls along both sides of the Yi River south of Luoyang city. Construction began after Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang, and continued through multiple dynasties including Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. Currently, there are more than 2,300 niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscribed steles. The most striking is the Vairocana Buddha in Fengxian Temple, over 17 meters high, with a full face and compassionate eyes, said to be modeled after the appearance of Empress Wu Zetian, representing the peak of Tang dynasty stone carving art. Together with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang, it is known as the three major grottoes of China and is a World Cultural Heritage site. When visiting, walk along the Yi River path from the West Mountain caves southward. Bingyang Three Caves, Wanfo Cave, and Lotus Cave each have scenic highlights. Cross the bridge to the East Mountain Worship Platform to overlook the full view. My suggestion is to first visit the main West Mountain caves in the morning, when there are fewer people, to carefully appreciate the Buddha, and then go to the East Mountain viewing platform in the afternoon for a long-distance view, as the lighting and angle are best for photos; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so a pair of comfortable shoes will save a lot of effort.
Tips: The caves are mostly built on cliffs, so maintain distance from the cliff and hold the railing while viewing, and take care of the elderly and children. Tourists generally report that most visitors find the Vairocana Buddha the most impressive, and the West Mountain is best for photos at sunset; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and allow at least half a day. According to the actual situation, respect local customs, dress appropriately when entering religious sites, avoid pointing casually, and a greeting can exchange for goodwill.
Day 2: Mount Song
Gather in the morning and set off for Mount Song. Follow the main route with the guide, visiting all the key spots, allowing ample time for photos and rest; enjoy a local specialty lunch at noon, continue exploring in the afternoon, and check into the hotel in the evening to rest and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: One highlight arranged in the itinerary is Mount Song. Mount Song is the Central Mountain among the Five Great Mountains, mainly located in Dengfeng City, consisting of the Taishi and Shaoshi mountains, with the main peak Junji Peak reaching about 1,492 meters above sea level. Its most distinctive feature is that Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism have coexisted on the same mountain for a thousand years: Songyang Academy was a major center for Song Dynasty Neo-Confucianism, and the famous story of "Standing in the Snow at Cheng's Gate" took place here; Zhongyue Temple is one of the largest and best-preserved temple complexes among the Five Great Mountains; the Stargazing Platform in Gaocheng Town was built under the supervision of Guo Shoujing during the Yuan Dynasty and is one of the oldest existing astronomical observation structures. In 2010, the historical complex "Center of Heaven and Earth," represented by Songyang Academy, Zhongyue Temple, Songyue Temple Pagoda, Shaolin Temple Permanent Residence, Pagoda Forest, Chuzu Ancestral Temple, and the Stargazing Platform, was inscribed on the World Heritage List. My understanding is that on the first day, there is no need to rush—first visit the academy and Zhongyue Temple to understand the ceremonial framework of the "Center of Heaven and Earth" and save your energy for climbing the mountains later; if time permits, go to the Three Sovereigns Fort walkway on Shaoshi Mountain in the evening to watch the sunset, which is the most photogenic part of the trip.
Tips: The mountain trails have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. Those with mobility issues are advised to take the cable car. Visitors generally feedback that most believe Mount Song is worth visiting specifically, so it's recommended to slow down, listen to the guide, and save your time for the details and most photogenic spots that move you the most. Depending on your situation, the worst thing on a group tour is rushing through; listening to the commentary is the essence, as the cultural stories behind each attraction are often more memorable than photos. Ask the guide on the spot if you don’t understand something.
Day 3: Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden
Early in the morning, start by going to the park, first watch the opening performance, then check in along Hong Bridge and Bian River, experiencing the Song Dynasty-style marketplace; in the afternoon, enjoy free activities and you can visit the nearby night market.
Attraction introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden. Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden is located at Kaifeng and is a Song culture-themed park built based on Zhang Zeduan's 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival' from the Northern Song Dynasty. The park recreates the Hong Bridge, Bian River, streets, and restaurants from the painting, reviving the bustling city life of Tokyo Bianliang. There are live performances and folk parades throughout the day. The most famous is the nighttime water show 'Great Song: Dreams of Tokyo,' which uses light and shadow to recreate the grandeur of the Northern Song capital. During the day, you can watch immersive folk performances like the opening ceremony, Bao Gong welcoming guests, and Mr. Wang recruiting a bride. This place is also a paradise for hanfu enthusiasts; wearing Song-style hanfu and strolling along Hong Bridge and Bian River offers countless opportunities for ancient-style photos. My understanding is: upon entering the park, first get the performance schedule, plan the must-see shows and nighttime event, and then casually explore and eat; visiting the marketplace during the day offers the strongest sense of immersion, while the nighttime performance is a visual and auditory feast that is worth watching if the budget allows.
Tips: Food and drink in the park is relatively expensive, so it is recommended to bring water and snacks and to take care of personal belongings. Visitors generally feel the marketplace is most immersive during the day, while the nighttime show 'Great Song: Dreams of Tokyo' has mixed reviews; tickets are relatively pricey, so plan according to your budget. Depending on the situation, if you want authentic food, go deeper into the alleys; the queue at the main entrance has long lines and the taste is average. For local specialties, ask for prices first and compare; local supermarkets often offer more authentic options.
