Xinxiang 4-Day Tour: White Horse Temple & Chongdu Valley
Xinxiang 4-day tour covering White Horse Temple and Chongdu Valley. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: White Horse Temple
Today's Buddha-worshipping journey: I followed the guide from Qiyun Tower to the Sutra Library, listening along the way and understanding the 2,000-year-long incense offerings of China's first ancient temple; in the afternoon, I strolled around the temple, and in the evening, took a rest.
Attraction introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is a temple, located in the eastern part of a city. It was first built during the Yongping years of the Eastern Han Dynasty to commemorate the white horse carrying the scriptures and the initial spread of Buddhism to the Central Plains. It is honored as 'China's first ancient temple' and is the first government-built temple following the introduction of Buddhism to China. Inside the temple, the Qiyun Tower Courtyard, the Great Buddha Hall, and the Hall of Heavenly Kings are laid out along the central axis, with incense burning continuously amid red walls and green cypress trees for more than two thousand years. Notably, the temple also has foreign-style Buddha halls donated by Myanmar, Thailand, India, and other countries, presenting a unique view of the eastward transmission and return of Buddhist culture. My understanding is that visitors should first see the main halls along the central axis, then circle to the Qiyun Tower Courtyard, and finally visit the southern exotic-style Buddha halls to experience cultural fusion; visiting early in the morning when there are few people is ideal, as the morning light on the red walls and ancient cypresses is most picturesque and allows you to avoid tourist crowds.
Tips: The temple has many stone steps and thresholds; do not step on the thresholds, and when worshipping, follow the order and do not push. Visitors generally report that the exotic-style Buddha halls (Thai/Myanmar/Indian courtyards) are photogenic and feel more expansive than expected; note that walking in the international temple area requires more effort, so conserve your energy. Depending on the actual situation, the best times for photo opportunities are early morning or late afternoon—when there are fewer people, the light is soft in the morning, and the golden glow at dusk is most striking. Midday lighting is harsh and crowded, so it is better to rest at that time.
Day 2: Chongdugou
Morning tour, along the Jinji River and Dicuiri River to see bamboo forests and flying waterfalls; at noon, try wild vegetables and farmhouse meals; in the afternoon, stroll through villages in western Henan and enjoy the coolness typical of Jiangnan water towns.
Attractions Introduction: This stop is Chongdugou, located in Luanchuan, known for its vast bamboo forests, waterfalls and streams, and the farming customs of western Henan. It is one of the few "Jiangnan water town"-style summer resorts in Henan. The scenic area is divided into two zones, Jinji River and Dicuiri River. Jinji River is famous for its waterfalls, splashing water, and refreshing cooling atmosphere; Dicuiri River consists of continuous bamboo forests, and walking through it is a feast of green scenery. Here, visitors can stay in farmhouse accommodations and try wild vegetables, experiencing authentic village life in western Henan. The pace is relaxed, making it especially suitable for family slow travel and summer vacations. My understanding is to slow down the pace and not rush to see every site—walking in the bamboo forest and sitting by the creek is the proper way to enjoy Chongdugou; coming in summer is the most comfortable, so cool you won't want to leave.
Tips: Signal may be poor in the canyon, so arrange meeting points with the guide in advance and avoid going alone. Visitors generally feedback that most of them think Chongdugou is worth visiting specifically. It is recommended to slow down the pace, listen to the guide's explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Considering practical situations, dehydration is the greatest risk on long trips—carry a water bottle and drink small amounts frequently. On the first night in the plateau or mountains, avoid washing your hair or taking a long bath to give your body some time to adjust.
Day 3: Free activities
Early in the morning, enter Guoliang Village and take advantage of the morning light to walk along the cliffside highway, experiencing the shock of tunnels carved into the cliff; in the afternoon, enjoy free activities, you can go deep into Wanxian Mountain Danfengou, and return in the evening.
Friendly reminder: There is no uniform plan for free activity days. Before going out, note the hotel location and meeting time, make sure your phone is fully charged, and bring a power bank. Visitors generally report that most people use free activity days to sleep in, then go out for sightseeing, eating, and additional photos, which is very relaxing. Depending on the actual situation, the best time to take good photos is early morning or late afternoon—there are fewer people and softer light in the morning, and golden light in the evening is best for photos. At noon, the light is harsh and crowded, so it's better to rest during this time.
Day 4: Return
Transfer to the departure terminal per your booked train or flight; keep travel documents and tickets in your carry-on.
