Zhengzhou 4-Day Tour: Shaolin Temple & Wanxianshan
Zhengzhou 4-day tour covering Shaolin Temple and Wanxianshan and Yuntai Mountain. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Shaolin Temple
Today's Shaolin Temple trip took a close look from the mountain gate to the Sutra Pavilion, focusing on the solemnity of the Tower Forest and the awe of the martial arts performances; In the afternoon, we toured the surrounding area, and in the evening, we checked into the hotel.
Attraction introduction: Today's itinerary includes Shaolin Temple attractions. Shaolin Temple is located at the foot of Wuru Peak on Shaoshi Mountain in Dengfeng. It was first built in the 19th year of Taihe of the Northern Wei Dynasty (495 AD). It is both the ancestral temple of Chan Buddhism and the birthplace of Shaolin martial arts, with a history of over 1,500 years. The core highlights are concentrated in three places: the main temple is lined with the central axis as the mountain gate, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Sutra Library, and Snow Pavilion, with halls and ancient steles lined up; The Pagoda Forest is the largest existing ancient pagoda complex in China, with over 200 brick and stone tomb pagodas from the Tang, Song, to Qing dynasties, each with a different form, corresponding to a high monk; The Bodhidharma Cave on Wuru Peak is said to be where Bodhidharma faced the wall for nine years. The martial arts hall hosts Shaolin martial arts performances at scheduled times every day, showcasing the true skills of boxing, weapons, and hard qigong. My understanding is that before entering the temple, you should first follow the guide along the central axis before freely exploring the area; Please keep quiet and tour the pagoda forest area; Enter the martial arts show fifteen minutes early to secure a good spot.
Friendly reminder: There are many incense stalls around the temple; please buy incense as needed and spend rationally. Visitors generally report that martial arts performances are most popular with families, while the Pagoda Forest and Chuzu Nunnery are often overlooked along the way; Reminder: The scenic area is highly commercialized, so ask about prices for vegetarian meals and surrounding areas first. Based on actual conditions, documents and wallets should be kept separately. Important documents should be taken and stored on your phone for backup. If lost, you can quickly reissue them without delaying your trip.
Day 2: Wanxian Mountain
Gather in the morning and depart for Wanxian Mountain. Follow the guide along the main route, visiting the highlights one by one, leaving ample time for photos and rest; Enjoy local specialties at noon, continue deeper in the afternoon, and check in at the hotel in the evening to recharge and prepare for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction introduction: One of the highlights included in the itinerary is Wanxian Mountain. Wanxian Mountain is located deep within the Taihang Mountains in Huixian, with the Guoliang Cliff Highway and Nanpingdan Valley. The red cliffs intertwine with waterfalls and clear pools, making it one of the most iconic landscape galleries of the Taihang Mountains. This area is famous for filming many TV dramas. Attractions like Guoliang Village, Tianchi, and Fortresses form a stunning Taihang hiking route. The summer temperatures are pleasant, making it a place not far from Zhengzhou and Luoyang that you can get close to the Taihang landscape. My understanding is that the hike is heavy and there are many steps, so be sure to wear non-slip shoes; Watch out for passing vehicles along the cliff-hanging road; early morning and evening light makes the red cliffs the best for photos.
Friendly reminder: The climbing section has many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. Those with mobility difficulties are advised to take the cable car up and down. Visitors generally report that the cliff-hanging road (Guoliang Cave) is the most impressive and photogenic, and the mountain road often causes motion sickness. Bring motion sickness medicine and walk slowly on the viewing platform to take care. Depending on the situation, bring some change and small packs of snacks. These will be useful when signal is poor or you need to resupply last. Don't wait until you're hungry.
Day 3: Yuntai Mountain
Early in the morning, visit Yuntai Mountain. Take advantage of the cool to first walk through Red Stone Gorge and Tanpu Gorge to experience the wonder of water flowing upward; In the afternoon, take the cable car up Zhuyu Peak to overlook Taihang Mountains, then descend in the evening.
Attraction introduction: Today's itinerary includes Yuntai Mountain Scenic Spot, located in Xiuwu at Jiaozuo, one of the first World Geoparks. It is famous for the red cliffs and clear waters of Hongshi Gorge, the flying waterfalls of Tanpu Gorge, the Yuntai Sky Waterfall known as Asia's highest waterfall in Quanpu Gorge, and the sea of clouds and sunrises at Zhuyu Peak. It is the most representative landscape of southern Taihang foothills. Hongshi Gorge is the essence of highlights, a red quartz sandstone canyon about two kilometers long, with winding green water at the valley floor and cliffs red like rosy clouds; Zhuyu Peak is famous for the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei's poem "Planting cornelian cherry everywhere, one person misses." Taking the cable car to the top offers a panoramic view of the Taihang peaks. Shuttle buses connect various points within the scenic area, and the trails are gentle, suitable for family outings. My understanding is that if you can't finish the trip in one day, first secure the two core areas: Hongshi Gorge and Monkey Valley. If the line for scenic bus delivery is long, allow plenty of time; In summer, enjoy the water and cool scenery; in autumn, the forests are colorful—each has its own charm.
Friendly reminder: The temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains is large, and the wind at the summit is strong, so a windproof jacket and warm inner layer are very necessary. Visitors generally say that Hongshi Gorge is recognized as the most photogenic section, and the sea of clouds at Zhuyu Peak is also worth it; Reminder to the long line for scenic delivery buses: if you can't finish walking in one day, prioritize Hongshi Gorge + Monkey Valley. Considering actual conditions, mountain weather can change quickly; a windproof jacket is more practical than anything; Always choose shoes that are non-slip and comfortable; avoid taking a few photos to avoid twisting your ankle.
Day 4: Return
Transfer to the departure terminal per your booked train or flight; keep travel documents and tickets in your carry-on.
