Kaifeng 3-Day Song Dynasty Tour: Millennium City Park, Wansui Mountain, Dragon Pavilion and Iron Pagoda
Millennium City Park and Wansui Mountain sit side by side and can be linked in a day. Longting and the Iron Pagoda are Song capital remains, with the city laid out below the hall platform.
Highlights
Day 1: Millennium City Park
The park sits on the east bank of Longting Lake, ten minutes by taxi from the station. Be there when gates open at nine.
It is China's first theme park built from a painting rather than a dynasty, laid out as the scroll depicts: Bian River, Rainbow Bridge, the city gate and the market streets. Both banks recreate the sectional view of a Song city — inns, taverns, camel trains, spice shops — matching the original.
Several performances run daily, including the large-scale living show staged on the lake, which needs its own time slot.
Lunch outside the park; Kaifeng has a dense snack tradition, try braised carp with noodles and soup dumplings. Return in the afternoon when the crowds thin. Stay downtown, then visit the Drum Tower night market.
Day 2: Wansui Mountain, Longting and the Iron Pagoda
Wansui Mountain is separated from Millennium City Park by a single road. Arrive at eight.
The site was the rear garden of the Song palace, long called the Eastern Capital. It now carries a dense programme of martial-arts stage shows and small theatres. Give the morning two hours and see the Water Margin performance.
Before ten thirty, wander the painting academy and the Nine-Bend Corridor — well-kept and far less crowded than the neighbouring park.
Lunch by Longting Lake, then the palace itself. Longting Hall stands on a three-tier stone terrace at the end of the axis. From the platform the old city spreads south, its cruciform street pattern still legible.
Jade Pavilion in the surrounding park is a quick add. From Longting walk twenty minutes east to the Iron Pagoda, a Northern Song tower built entirely in glazed brick across 137 courses; standing below it, the joints are almost impossible to find. Back to town by evening.
Day 3: Return journey
Drop-off after breakfast. Kaifeng North is twenty minutes away; Zhengzhou East ninety minutes. With half a day spare, Daxiangguo Temple is free and holds a thousand-year-old ginkgo that turns gold in autumn, while the reconstructed Kaifeng Prefect Office shows how Song officialdom looked. Both are within walking distance downtown.
Pack the night before. One day for city life, one for the imperial quarter, and an unhurried final morning.
