Luoyang 4-day tour covering Longmen Grottoes and Jiguan Cave and Chongdu Valley. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Longmen Grottoes
Gather in the morning and depart for Longmen Grottoes, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for photos and rest; enjoy a local specialty lunch at noon, and check into the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliffs along both sides of the Yi River in the southern part of Luoyang. Since Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang, its construction continued through multiple dynasties including Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. Currently, there are over 2,300 niches, more than 100,000 statues, and over 2,800 engraved steles. The most spectacular is the Vairocana Buddha in Fengxian Temple, which is over 17 meters tall, with a full face and compassionate eyes. It is said to have been carved based on the appearance of Empress Wu Zetian and represents the pinnacle of Tang Dynasty stone carving art. Together with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang, it is considered one of China's three great grottoes and is also a World Heritage site. During the visit, walk south along the Yi River trail from the West Mountain Grottoes; Bin Yang San Cave, Wan Fo Cave, and Lotus Cave each have their highlights. Cross the bridge to the East Mountain Worship Terrace for a panoramic view. My understanding is to first see the main caves in the West Mountain in the morning, enjoying the Buddha when there are fewer people, and then go to the East Mountain terrace in the afternoon for distant views—the light and angle are most photogenic. Walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing steps, so a pair of comfortable shoes will save a lot of effort.
Tips: UV rays are strong in the grotto area, so bring a sun hat and sunscreen on sunny days. The route is long, so remember to stay hydrated. Visitors generally report that most find the Vairocana Buddha the most impressive, and the sunset at West Mountain provides the best photo light; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires returning the same way, so comfortable shoes and a half-day allocation are recommended. Depending on the actual situation, when taking photos, don’t just focus on capturing images—pay attention to your feet and the surrounding environment, and make sure to hold on firmly when standing on viewing platforms or trail edges.
Day 2: Jiguan Cave
Assemble in the morning and depart for Jiguan Cave, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for photos and rest; enjoy the local specialty lunch at noon, and check into the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day’s itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today’s itinerary includes the Jiguan Cave attraction. Jiguan Cave is a karst cave in Luanchuan, with stalactites in various shapes and forms. Stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone flowers transform into splendid colors under the lights. The cave maintains a constant temperature all year round, warm in winter and cool in summer. Attractions inside the cave are dense, and as you move, the scenery changes; with the guide's explanation, you can understand the miraculous geological changes over hundreds of millions of years. It complements Longtan Grand Canyon’s one cave and one gorge, forming a classic geological wonder route in western Henan. My understanding is, when entering the cave, remember to follow the guide; the formation and naming of the stalactites are very interesting, and it’s easy to miss the highlights if you explore on your own. The cave floor is slippery, and some areas are low, so wear non-slip shoes and watch your head.
Tips: There are many slippery sections on the mountain roads, especially downhill, so pay attention to shifting your center of gravity backward and slow down; knee pads can be prepared. Most visitors have reported that Jiguan Cave is worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow your pace, listen to the guide’s explanations, and save your time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Considering the actual situation, photography is best early in the morning or at dusk—the soft light with fewer people in the morning and the golden glow at sunset make for the best shots, while midday the harsh light is crowded and flat, so it’s better to use that time for rest.
Day 3: Chongdugou
Gather in the morning and set off for Chongdugou, follow the guide to visit the main attractions, leaving plenty of time for taking photos and resting; enjoy a local specialty lunch at noon, check into the hotel in the evening, and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: This stop brings us to Chongdugou, located in Luanchuan. Chongdugou is known for its vast bamboo forests, cascading waterfalls, and the agricultural scenery of western Henan, making it a rare 'Jiangnan water town'-style summer retreat in Henan. The scenic area is divided into the Jinji River and Dicui River sections. Jinji River is famous for its waterfalls, with splashing water providing a refreshing atmosphere; Dicui River features contiguous bamboo groves, offering a green view all around when strolling through it. Here, you can stay in farmhouse accommodations, taste wild vegetables, and experience authentic rural life in western Henan, with a leisurely pace, especially suitable for family slow travel and summer vacations. My understanding is to slow down the pace and not rush to see attractions—in the bamboo forest, take a walk; by the stream, take a seat, which is the proper way to enjoy Chongdugou. Summer is the most comfortable season to visit, with cool weather that makes you not want to leave.
Tips: The water sections in the canyon are slippery, so be sure to wear anti-slip trekking shoes or sports shoes and protect valuables such as your phone from water. Tourists generally report that most believe Chongdugou is worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide, and leave time for the details that move you the most and the best photo spots. In practical terms, long trips can easily lead to dehydration, so carry a water bottle and sip water frequently. On the first night at high altitude or in mountainous areas, avoid washing your hair or bathing for too long, giving your body some time to adjust.
Day 4: Return
Transfer to the departure terminal per your booked train or flight; keep travel documents and tickets in your carry-on.
