Day 1: Longmen Grottoes

Today's tour Longmen Grottoes suggests spending half a day: the main cave of Xishan Mountain, the East Mountain Grandstand, and Baiyuan of Xiangshan Temple are all connected, followed by explanations to understand the stories behind the stone carvings of the Northern Wei and flourishing Tang dynasties; Return in the evening to rest.

Attraction introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes, carved into the cliffs on both banks of the Yi River south of Luoyang city. Since Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang, construction has continued through Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, and other dynasties. There are over 2,300 cave niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscriptions and inscriptions preserved. The most impressive is the Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple, standing over 17 meters tall, with a plump face and benevolent eyes. Legend has it that it was carved after Wu Zetian's likeness, marking the pinnacle of Tang dynasty stone carving art. Along with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang, it is one of China's three great grottoes and a World Cultural Heritage site. When touring, head south along the Yi River trail from the Xishan Grottoes, where Binyang Three Caves, Ten Thousand Buddha Caves, and Lotus Cave each have highlights. Cross the bridge to the Dongshan Buddha Worship Platform for a panoramic view. My understanding is that in the morning, first visit the main cave of Xishan and admire the Big Buddha while there are fewer people; in the afternoon, go to the Dongshan Viewing Platform for the best lighting and angle; If you need to walk backward along both banks of the Yi River, a pair of comfortable shoes can save you a lot of effort.

Friendly reminder: Grottoes are mostly built along cliffs. When viewing, keep a distance from the cliff face, hold the railings properly, and take care of the elderly and children. Visitors generally report that most find the Vairocana Buddha the most breathtaking, and the best sunlight at sunset on the Western Hills; If you need to walk back along both banks of the Yi River, it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and reserve half a day. Based on actual conditions, respect local customs, dress appropriately when entering religious sites, avoid random guidance, and a simple greeting can earn goodwill.

Day 2: Baiyun Mountain

In the morning, take a vehicle up to Baiyun Mountain and climb Yuhuang Peak to see the sea of clouds; have a light meal at the mountain top at noon, then in the afternoon visit Jiulong Waterfall and the High Mountain Peony Garden, breathe in the forest oxygen bar, and descend in the evening to check in.

Scenic spot introduction: This stop is Baiyun Mountain. Baiyun Mountain is located in the heart of Funiu Mountains in Song County. From Yuhuang Peak, you can enjoy the sunrise over the sea of clouds. With high forest coverage and abundant negative oxygen ions, it is a natural large oxygen bar. Within the scenic area, Jiulong Waterfall and the High Mountain Peony Garden each have their own characteristics. It is one of the few high mountain holiday resorts suitable for summer cooling and autumn leaf viewing. You can use the cable car or scenic shuttle to connect the points. The mountaintop offers a broad view with mist swirling around, looking like a fairyland. In my opinion, visiting in summer to escape the heat is most worthwhile, as the coolness of the mountains contrasts sharply with the sweltering city. Waking up early to climb Yuhuang Peak to see the sunrise over the clouds requires a bit of luck, but even if you miss the sunrise, the mountain scenery in the morning fog is beautiful enough.

Tips: The mountain paths have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. Those with mobility issues are recommended to use the cable car. Visitors generally feedback that most believe Baiyun Mountain is worth a special visit. It is suggested to slow down, follow the guide's explanations, and reserve time for the details that touch you most and the best photography spots. Considering the actual situation, the worst thing about group tours is rushing through everything; listening to the guide is the essence. The cultural stories behind each attraction are often more unforgettable than photos, and if you don't understand something, ask the guide on the spot.

Day 3: Wangcheng Park

Setting off early from the hotel straight to Wangcheng Park, first listen to the tour guide explain the background and highlights, then explore freely at a leisurely pace and take additional photos at spots of interest; after lunch, take a short rest, and return to the hotel in the evening to accumulate energy for the next day.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Wangcheng Park. Wangcheng Park is located at Luoyang, named because it is situated on the ruins of the Eastern Zhou royal city. It has been one of the main venues for the Peony Culture Festival of Luoyang for many years and is also the city park most familiar to Luoyang citizens. Every April, famous peony varieties such as Yao Yellow, Wei Purple, and Zhao Pink bloom in competition, creating a spectacular sea of colorful flowers; the park also preserves the ruins of the Zhou royal city and a zoo, combining historical heritage with recreational functions. It is a classic spot for tourists to check in to the ‘Peony Flower City.’ My understanding is that if you visit during the peony season (April), this place should be listed as a must-visit destination, as the mornings are less crowded and the peonies with dew are at their most delicate. Outside the flowering season, it is more suitable for a leisurely walk.

Tips: Dining prices inside the park are relatively high, so you may bring water and small snacks, and make sure to take care of your personal belongings. Visitors generally report that most people think Wangcheng Park is worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide’s explanations, and leave time for the details that move you the most and the best photo spots. Based on the situation, if you want authentic food, go deeper into the alleys; the queues at the main entrance of the scenic area are long and the taste is average. For local specialties, ask for the price first and compare; local supermarkets are often more reliable.
