Jiaozuo 5-Day Tour: Wangcheng Park & Longmen Grottoes
Jiaozuo 5-day tour covering Wangcheng Park and Longmen Grottoes and Laojun Mountain. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Wangcheng Park
Depart from the hotel early in the morning and head straight to Wangcheng Park. First, listen to the tour guide explain its background and highlights, then enjoy a leisurely walk at your own pace and take extra photos of spots that interest you. After lunch, take a short rest, and return to the hotel in the evening to conserve energy for the next day.
Attraction Introduction: One of the main highlights arranged in the itinerary is Wangcheng Park. Wangcheng Park is located in Luoyang and is named because it sits on the site of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty royal city. It is one of the main venues for the Peony Culture Festival in Luoyang over the years, and is also the city park most familiar to Luoyang citizens. Every April, famous peonies such as Yao Huang, Wei Zi, and Zhao Fen bloom in competition, displaying a magnificent array of colors. The park also preserves the ruins of the Zhou royal city and a zoo, combining historical depth with recreational functions. It is a classic spot for tourists to visit the "Peony Flower City." My understanding is that if you visit during peony season (April), you must include this place as a must-see spot; in the morning, there are fewer people, and the dew-laden peonies are at their most delicate. Outside of flower season, it is more suitable for a leisurely walk.
Tips: When visiting the park with children, be aware of the risk of getting separated. Agree on a meeting point in advance and prepare a contact card for your child. Tourists generally feedback that most consider Wangcheng Park worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide's explanations, and reserve your time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Respect local customs and traditions based on actual conditions; when entering religious sites, dress appropriately and refrain from pointing casually. A simple greeting can bring goodwill.
Day 2: Longmen Grottoes
Today's visit is to Longmen Grottoes. It's recommended to reserve half a day: connecting the Main Cave of the Western Hills, the viewing platform of the Eastern Hills, and Baiyuan Temple on Fragrant Hills in one line, and follow the guide to understand the stories behind the stone carvings from the Northern Wei and High Tang periods; return in the evening to rest.
Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliffs along both banks of the Yi River south of Luoyang City. Construction began after Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang and continued through the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang dynasties. Currently, there are more than 2,300 caves, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscriptions. The most striking feature is the Vairocana Buddha of Fengxian Temple, over 17 meters tall, with a full face and kind eyes, said to have been carved based on Wu Zetian's appearance, representing the peak of High Tang stone carving art. Along with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Yungang in Datong, it is known as one of China's three major grottoes and is also a world cultural heritage site. When visiting, start from the Western Hills Caves along the Yi River trail heading south; Binyang Three Caves, Ten Thousand Buddha Cave, and Lotus Cave each have points of interest. Cross the bridge to the Eastern Hills Worshiping Platform for a panoramic view. My understanding is to first see the Western Hills Main Cave in the morning and enjoy the Buddha while it’s less crowded; in the afternoon, go to the Eastern Hills platform for a distant view, where the lighting and angles are best for photos. Walking along both banks of the Yi River involves retracing your steps, so a comfortable pair of shoes can save a lot of effort.
Tips: Visiting the grottoes mainly involves walking and stairs, so it is recommended to wear non-slip, comfortable shoes and carry light luggage. Pay attention to your footing along both banks of the Yi River. Most tourists have remarked that the Vairocana Buddha is the most impressive, and the Western Hills at sunset have the best lighting for photos. Walking along both banks requires retracing your steps, so wearing comfortable shoes and reserving half a day is suggested. In practice, joining a tour, the risk is rushing through; listening to the guide is the essence. The cultural stories behind each attraction are often more memorable than photos. If something is unclear, ask the guide on the spot.
Day 3: Laojun Mountain
In the morning, take the cable car up Laojun Mountain and visit the Golden Summit Taoist temple complex. On a clear day, you may encounter a sea of clouds. Have a light lunch at the mountain top at noon. In the afternoon, walk along the Ten-Mile Painted Screen Trail, overlook the mountains from the glass viewing platform, and in the evening, descend the mountain and check in to the hotel.
Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights of this itinerary is Laojun Mountain, which is located in Luoyang, Luanchuan County. It is the main peak of the Funiu Mountains and a famous Taoist mountain. Legend has it that it was the place where Laozi, the founder of Taoism, retired to cultivate himself. The Golden Summit Taoist temple complex stands atop peaks over 2,000 meters high. With golden tiles and red walls, and a sea of clouds rolling below, it is renowned as 'traveling far to witness a fleeting beauty of the human world.' The Ten-Mile Painted Screen is the highlight of the entire journey; it is a high-altitude plank road suspended on an cliff, offering changing views of the peaks, clouds, and sunrise with every step. The mountain can be reached by a two-stage cable car. On sunny days, you can see the sea of clouds and sunrise from the top, and in winter, it is a highly popular spot in the Central Plains for snow viewing. My understanding is that it is essential to take the cable car early in the morning to catch the best light at the Golden Summit and Ten-Mile Painted Screen. The wind on the summit is strong and the temperature is low, so a windproof jacket and a thermos are standard. Those who are afraid of heights should not force themselves on the glass viewing platform.
Tips: The temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountain area is large, and the wind is strong at the summit. A windproof outer jacket and warm inner layers are necessary. Tourists generally report that the sea of clouds and sunrise at the Golden Summit are the biggest highlights, and many people stay at the top overnight to catch the dawn. Note that the temperature difference at the summit is significant and queues for the cable car can be long, so during peak seasons, it is important to go early. To eat authentic local food, venture deeper into the alleys; queues at the main entrance of the scenic area are long and the taste is generally average. For local specialties, check the price and compare; local supermarkets often offer more genuine products.
