Day 1: Longmen Grottoes

In the morning, head to Longmen Grottoes. Walk along the Yihe River trail from the Western Hills Grottoes, taking a close look at the Leshan Giant Buddha at Fengxian Temple, then cross the bridge to the Eastern Hills Worship Terrace to enjoy a panoramic view. At noon, taste the Luoyang water banquet. In the afternoon, visit Xiangshan Temple and Bai Garden, and return to the hotel in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was excavated on the cliffs along both sides of the Yihe River in the south of Luoyang city, and construction continued since Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang. It went through multiple dynasties including Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. Currently, there are more than 2,300 caves, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 stone inscriptions and epitaphs preserved. The most breathtaking is the Leshan Giant Buddha at Fengxian Temple, with a total height of over 17 meters, a full and gentle face, and eyes full of compassion. It is said to have been carved based on the appearance of Empress Wu Zetian and represents the peak of stone carving art in the Tang Dynasty. Together with the Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang Grottoes, it is known as one of China's three major grottoes and is also a World Cultural Heritage site. When visiting, walk south along the Yihe River trail from the Western Hills Grottoes. Bin Yang Three Caves, Ten Thousand Buddhas Cave, and Lotus Cave each have their own highlights. Crossing the bridge to the Eastern Hills Worship Terrace offers a panoramic view. My understanding is, in the morning, first see the main cave of the Western Hills and take advantage of fewer crowds to appreciate the Giant Buddha, and in the afternoon, go to the Eastern Hills terrace for a distant view, where the light and angles are most photogenic. Walking along the Yihe River requires retracing your steps, so a pair of comfortable shoes can save a lot of effort.

Tips: The UV exposure in the Grottoes Scenic Area is strong, so prepare a sun hat and sunscreen on sunny days. The visiting route is relatively long, so remember to stay hydrated. Tourists generally feedback that most visitors find the Leshan Giant Buddha the most impressive, and the sunset at the Western Hills provides the best lighting for photography. Walking along the Yihe River requires retracing your steps, so it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and reserve half a day. Considering the actual situation, do not shop impulsively. If you see a "limited-time offer," calm down for three minutes first. If you really want to bring souvenirs, be sure to buy from regular stores and keep the receipt for peace of mind.

Day 2: Free activities

Start early in the morning, enter Chongdugou, enjoy a walk on the bamboo forest trail and visit the waterfall clusters while it’s cool, which is suitable for a slow family outing; in the afternoon, enjoy free activities, you can take additional photos or have a short rest, and return in the evening.

Tips: The main risk of free activities is being unprepared, so it is recommended to store documents and cash separately, and confirm the meeting time and place with the tour guide in advance. Tourists generally feedback that frequent travelers like to reserve free days for local food and streets, to experience the most authentic local life. In practice, the risk in group tours is rushing through sites superficially; listening to explanations is the essence. The cultural stories behind each attraction are often more memorable than photos. If you don't understand something, ask the tour guide on the spot.

Day 3: Jiguan Cave

Today's geological trip: Follow the guide to learn about the formation of karst caves and the wonders of stalactites; in the afternoon, you can explore the surrounding areas, and rest in the evening.

Attraction introduction: Today's itinerary includes 1 attraction. The attraction is the karst cave in Luanchuan. Inside the cave, stalactites come in various shapes; stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone flowers transform into magnificent colors under the lights. The cave maintains a constant and pleasant temperature all year round, warm in winter and cool in summer. The attractions inside the cave are dense, with scenery changing at every step. With the guide's explanation, you can understand the marvels of geological changes over hundreds of millions of years. It complements the 'one cave, one gorge' experience, forming a classic geological sightseeing route in western Henan. From my understanding, when entering the cave, be sure to follow the guide, as the formation and naming of the stalactites are very interesting, something you might miss if exploring alone; the cave floor is slippery and some areas are low, so wear non-slip shoes and watch your head.

Warm tips: The hiking paths have many stairs and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. Those with mobility problems are advised to take the cable car. Visitors generally feedback that many think the attraction is worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide's explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Based on the actual situation, bring some change and small snacks with you; they will be useful if the park has poor signal or temporary shortages. Don’t wait until you’re hungry to look for food.
