Day 1: Laojun Mountain

In the morning, take the cable car up Laojun Mountain and visit the Jinding Taoist Temple Complex; on clear days, you may encounter a sea of clouds. Have a simple meal at the mountaintop at noon. In the afternoon, walk along the Ten-Mile Painted Screen Trail, overlook the mountains from the glass viewing platform, and in the evening, descend to the hotel for check-in.

Attraction Introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Laojun Mountain. Laojun Mountain is located in Luoyang, Luanchuan County. It is the main peak of the Funiu Mountains and a famous Taoist mountain. It is said to be the place where the Taoist founder Laozi retired to cultivate. The Jinding Taoist Temple Complex stands atop peaks over 2,000 meters above sea level, with golden tiles and red walls, surrounded by a rolling sea of clouds. It is renowned for the saying, 'Travel far to witness the feast of the mortal world, and behold the beauty of the earthly realm.' The Ten-Mile Painted Screen Trail is the highlight of the route: a high-altitude plank road suspended along a sheer cliff, where you can enjoy views of peaks, the sea of clouds, and the sunrise. You can take a two-stage cable car to the top. On clear days, you can catch the sea of clouds and sunrise, and in winter, it is a popular spot for snow viewing in central China. My advice is to take the cable car early to secure the best light for the Jinding and the Ten-Mile Painted Screen; it is windy and cold at the top, so a windbreaker and thermos are essential. If you are afraid of heights, do not force yourself on the glass viewing platform.

Tips: The mountains have large temperature differences between morning and night, and it is windy at the summit, so a windproof jacket and warm inner layers are necessary. Visitors generally believe that the sea of clouds and sunrise at Jinding are the main attractions; many people stay overnight on the mountain to catch the dawn. Note that there are long queues for the cable car and wide temperature variations on the summit, so be sure to go early during peak season. In practical terms, for long trips, dehydration is the main concern, so carry a water bottle and drink small amounts frequently. On the first night at the plateau or mountains, avoid washing your hair or taking long baths to allow your body some time to adapt.

Day 2: Free activities

Early in the morning, enter Chongdugou and take advantage of the cool weather to walk along the bamboo forest trail and observe the waterfalls, which is suitable for a leisurely family stroll; in the afternoon, enjoy free time, during which you can take additional photos or rest briefly, and return in the evening.

Warm tips: The biggest concern during free time is being unprepared, so it is recommended to separate your ID and cash and to confirm the meeting time and place with the tour guide in advance. Tourists generally report that frequent travelers like to reserve free time days for local food and streets to experience the most authentic city life. Based on the actual situation, carry some small change and individually packaged snacks with you; they can be useful when the signals are poor or for temporary supplies at scenic spots—don’t wait until you are hungry to look for them.

Day 3: Jiguan Cave

Today's geological tour: Follow the guide to learn about the formation of karst caves and the wonders of stalactites; in the afternoon, you can explore the surrounding area, and rest in the evening.

Attraction introduction: There is one attraction in today's itinerary. It is a karst cave in Luanchuan, where the stalactites inside the cave come in a variety of shapes. Stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone flowers transform into gorgeous colors under the lighting. The cave maintains a pleasant constant temperature year-round, warm in winter and cool in summer. The attractions inside the cave are densely arranged, with scenery changing at every step. With the guide's explanation, you can understand the craftsmanship of geological changes over hundreds of millions of years. It complements other caves and gorges in the area, forming a classic geological sightseeing route in western Henan. In my understanding, remember to follow the guide when entering the cave; the formation and naming of stalactites are very interesting, and you might miss highlights if you look at them on your own. The cave floor can be slippery, and some areas are low, so wear non-slip shoes and watch your head.

Tips: The hiking sections have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. Those with mobility issues are advised to take the cable car up and down. Visitors generally feedback that most consider this cave worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide's explanation, and leave time for the details that impress you the most and the best photo spots. Depending on the situation, when taking photos, don't just focus on getting the perfect shot; pay attention to your footing and surroundings. Always hold on and stand firmly on viewing platforms and along the edges of walkways.
