Day 1: Longmen Grottoes

In the morning, head to Longmen Grottoes. From the Western Hills Caves, follow the Yihe River trail to closely admire the Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple, then cross the bridge to the Eastern Hills Worship Terrace to overlook the panoramic view. At noon, enjoy a Luoyang water banquet. In the afternoon, visit Xiangshan Temple and Bai Garden, and return to the hotel in the evening.

Attraction introduction: A major highlight arranged in the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliffs along both sides of the Yihe River south of Luoyang. Construction continued after Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang and went through multiple dynasties including Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. Currently, there are more than 2,300 caves, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 steles and inscriptions. The most spectacular is the Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple, over 17 meters tall, with a full face and compassionate eyes, said to be modeled on Empress Wu Zetian, representing the pinnacle of stone carving art in the High Tang period. Along with the Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang Grottoes, it is known as one of China's three major grottoes and is also a World Cultural Heritage site. When visiting, follow the Yihe River trail south from the Western Hills Caves. Bin Yang Three Caves, Ten Thousand Buddhas Cave, and Lotus Cave each have points of interest. Crossing the bridge to the Eastern Hills Worship Terrace allows a panoramic view. My understanding is that in the morning, you should first explore the main caves in the Western Hills to appreciate the Buddha while there are fewer people. In the afternoon, go to the Eastern Hills terrace for a distant view—the light and angle are best for photographs. Walking along both sides of the Yihe River requires retracing your steps, so a pair of comfortable shoes can save a lot of effort.

Tips: The caves are mostly built on cliffs. Keep a safe distance from the cliff walls when viewing, hold onto railings, and take care of the elderly and children. Visitor feedback suggests that most people find the Vairocana Buddha the most impressive, with the best photography light in the Western Hills at sunset. Walking along both sides of the Yihe River requires retracing your steps, so it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and reserve half a day. Considering actual conditions, mountain weather can change suddenly, so a windproof jacket is very useful. Shoes must be non-slip and comfortable. It is better to take fewer photos than to twist an ankle.

Day 2: Laojun Mountain

Early in the morning, take the two-stage cable car to reach the Golden Summit first, checking in at the temple complex and enjoying the sea of clouds and sunrise; in the afternoon, slowly descend along the Ten-Mile Painted Screen, changing your view step by step, and return in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is the Golden Summit. The Golden Summit is located in Luanchuan County, is the main peak of the Funiu Mountains, and is a famous Taoist mountain. It is said to be the place where Laozi, the founder of Taoism, retired for cultivation. The Golden Summit temple complex stands atop a peak over 2,000 meters above sea level. The temples with golden roofs and red walls amidst the rolling sea of clouds are renowned for the saying, "Travel far to a magnificent human feast, witness the prosperity of the mortal world." The Ten-Mile Painted Screen is the essence of the whole journey—a high-altitude plank road suspended on a cliff, offering ever-changing views of peak forests, seas of clouds, and sunrises. You can take the two-stage cable car up the mountain; on sunny days, reaching the summit allows you to enjoy the sunrise over the sea of clouds, while in winter, it is a highly popular spot for snow viewing in Central China. My advice is to get to the cable car early to secure the best light at the Golden Summit and the Ten-Mile Painted Screen; the summit is windy and cold, so a windproof jacket and thermos are essential, and those who are afraid of heights should not force themselves on the glass observation deck.

Tips: The climbing sections have many steps and steep slopes, so wearing non-slip sports shoes is a must. People with mobility issues are advised to take the cable car up and down. Visitors generally agree that the sea of clouds and sunrise at the Golden Summit are the main attractions, with many staying overnight at the summit to witness dawn. Be aware that the summit has large temperature differences and the cable car line can be long, so during peak season, it’s essential to start early. According to your actual situation, avoid impulsive shopping. If you see a "limited-time offer," wait three minutes calmly. If you really want to buy souvenirs, choose official stores and keep receipts for peace of mind.

Day 3: Guoliang Village

Today's Taihang trip focuses on the cliff-hanging road and film village, with views of the canyon villages; afternoon is for supplementary shooting, and evening for rest.

Attraction Introduction: A major highlight in the itinerary is Guoliang Village, Guoliang Village hidden on the cliffs deep in the Taihang Mountains, famous for its "cliff-hanging road." In the 1970s, villagers, in order to open a passage to the outside world and without any large machinery, spent more than five years chiseling a tunnel about 1,300 meters long into the sheer cliffs, which is considered a miracle of the "modern-day Yu Gong." This cliff-hanging road is now the most hardcore spot in the Taihang Mountains, where walking along it offers views of deep chasms and canyon villages. Guoliang Village is also called the "Chinese Film Village" because several films and TV dramas were shot here. My understanding is to allow enough time when walking on the cliff-hanging road, look and shoot along the way, pay attention to your steps and incoming vehicles; the best light is in the early morning or evening, while noon is rather flat. Wear non-slip shoes and avoid getting too close to the cliff edges.

Tips: The streets of the ancient town are crisscrossed and easy to get lost in, so remember the meeting time and noticeable landmarks. Visitors generally feel that the cliff village connected to the cliff-hanging road and the film shooting locations have a built-in sense of story; note that the village's food and accommodation are simple, so lower your expectations for a more enjoyable experience. Depending on the actual situation, keep your ID and wallet separate, take photos of important documents and back them up on your phone, so that in case of loss, you can quickly replace them without delaying your trip.
