Highlights
Day 1: Sui-Tang Luoyang City
Today, with Sui-Tang Luoyang City as the theme, avoid peak crowds and visit the park during off-peak hours, following the recommended route for an in-depth tour; have a nearby local-flavored lunch at noon, then enjoy free activities in the afternoon or follow the guide for additional visits. In the evening, stay at a hotel to rest.
Attraction Introduction: This stop is Sui-Tang Luoyang City. The Sui-Tang Luoyang City National Heritage Park centers around Yingtian Gate, Mingtang, and Tiantang, restoring the grandeur of the palaces in the prosperous Tang Dynasty 'Divine Capital' Luoyang. Yingtian Gate serves as the main southern gate of Sui-Tang Luoyang City, majestic in scale; climbing the tower allows a view down the central axis, and at night there is a stunning light show. Mingtang was the 'Palace of Ten Thousand Phenomena' during Empress Wu Zetian's era, while Tiantang is a tall Buddhist tower. The interiors of both buildings recreate the luxurious furnishings of the Tang Dynasty court. Walking along the shores of Jiuzhou Pool is also pleasant, evoking the grandeur of the imperial gardens of the time. This location is closely associated with TV dramas such as "Wu Zetian" and "The Wind Rises in Luoyang," making it one of the most popular Tang culture check-in spots in Luoyang in recent years. My understanding is that it is essential to visit at night—the lights at Yingtian Gate and Mingtang Tiantang are at their best when the lamps are just lit; viewing the palace interiors during the day and the light show at night offers two experiences in one day.
Tips: Popular landmarks in the ancient capital attract large crowds on holidays, so try to visit during off-peak times or book tickets in advance. Visitors generally feedback that most people feel Sui-Tang Luoyang City is worth a special trip. It is advisable to slow down, follow the guide for explanations, and spend time appreciating the details that touch you most and the best photo spots. Depending on actual circumstances, joining a tour is best to avoid rushing around; the key is to listen to the explanations, as the cultural stories behind each site are often more memorable than the photos. If you don't understand something, ask the guide on the spot.
Day 2: Baiyun Mountain
In the morning, take a bus to Baiyun Mountain and climb Yuhuang Peak to see the sea of clouds; have a light meal at the mountain top at noon, and in the afternoon visit Jiulong Waterfall and the High Mountain Peony Garden, breathing in the forest's fresh oxygen. Descend in the evening and stay overnight.
Scenic spot introduction: This stop is Baiyun Mountain. Baiyun Mountain is located in the heart of Funiu Mountains in Song County. From Yuhuang Peak, you can enjoy the sunrise over the sea of clouds. With high forest coverage and abundant negative oxygen ions, it is a natural oxygen bar. Within the scenic area, Jiulong Waterfall and the High Mountain Peony Garden each have their own characteristics. It is a rare highland resort for cooling off in summer and viewing red leaves in autumn. You can connect various points via cable car or sightseeing shuttle. The mountain top offers a broad view, shrouded in mist, like a fairyland. In my opinion, visiting in summer for the cool weather is most worthwhile, as the mountain’s coolness sharply contrasts with the city's heat. Watching the sunrise over the sea of clouds from Yuhuang Peak early in the morning requires a bit of luck, but even if you miss the sunrise, the mountain scenery in the morning fog is beautiful enough.
Tips: There are many slippery mountain paths, especially downhill sections; pay attention to shifting your center of gravity backwards and slowing your pace, and you may want to bring knee pads. Most visitors generally feel that Baiyun Mountain is worth traveling to specifically. It is recommended to slow your pace, listen to the guide’s commentary, and leave time to focus on the details that move you most and the best photo spots. According to actual conditions, for authentic food, go deeper into the alleys; queues at the main entrance usually mean average taste. For local specialties, ask for prices and compare; local supermarkets often provide more genuine products.
Day 3: White Horse Temple
Early in the morning, enter White Horse Temple and enjoy a peaceful walk among the red walls and green cypresses in the morning light, focusing on the Qiyun Pagoda and the two exotic Buddhist halls; in the afternoon, enjoy free activities and you can retake photos from the central axis, returning to the hotel in the evening.
Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is White Horse Temple, located in the east of Luoyang City. It was originally built during the Yongping period of the Eastern Han Dynasty to commemorate the White Horse transporting the sutras and the initial spread of Buddhism in the Central Plains. It is revered as the "first ancient temple in China" and is the first government-sponsored temple built after Buddhism was introduced to China. Within the temple, the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, the Great Buddha Hall, and the Heavenly King Hall are arranged along the central axis, with incense burning continuously among the red walls and green cypresses for over two thousand years. It is worth mentioning that the temple also has exotic-style Buddhist halls donated by countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, and India, presenting a unique landscape of the eastward transmission and return flow of Buddhist culture. My understanding is to first see the main hall along the central axis, then go around to the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, and finally visit the exotic Buddhist halls on both sides to experience cultural integration; arriving early in the morning is ideal, as the morning light on the red walls and ancient cypresses is most atmospheric, and it also allows you to avoid the peak tourist groups.
Warm Tips: Please keep quiet and dress neatly when entering the temple. Generally, photos are not taken inside the halls, and do not touch ritual instruments; you may offer merit voluntarily. Visitors generally report that the exotic-style Buddhist halls (Thai/Myanmar/Indian courtyards) are very photogenic and feel more spacious than expected; note that the international temple area requires quite a bit of walking, so conserve some energy. Depending on your situation, allocate your stamina wisely—tackle the main highlights in the morning when you are energetic and slow down in the afternoon. Don’t exhaust yourself on the first day, or you will have no energy for the following days.
