Day 1: Longtan Grand Canyon

Morning tour: Walk along the Liubutan and Yixiantian trails along the water, and witness the marvels of the Hongyan Zhanggu Valley where water flows uphill; have a simple lunch in the scenic area at noon, continue exploring in the afternoon, and return in the evening.

Attraction introduction: This stop is Longtan Grand Canyon, located in Xin’an. Longtan Grand Canyon is a canyon famous for wonders such as the Hongyan Zhanggu Valley and water flowing uphill, known as the "canyon gem" and the "natural museum of the ancient ocean." Trails like Liubutan and Yixiantian offer strong water-related fun. The red cliff faces and clear turquoise pools complement each other beautifully and are especially refreshing in summer, making it a family-friendly water destination not far from Luoyang city center. The canyon stretches for several kilometers, with waterfalls, deep pools, and odd-shaped rocks along the way, offering a new view at every step. My suggestion is to wear anti-slip creek shoes or sports shoes, and waterproof your valuables like your phone. Families with children should slow down, choose the gentle walkway sections, and not rush to complete the entire trail.

Tips: Canyon trails run close to water and cliffs — do not climb over railings or play in dangerous areas, and keep a close eye on children. Visitor feedback generally indicates that most believe Longtan Grand Canyon is worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide’s explanations, and leave time for the details that move you the most and the best photo spots. Depending on the situation, the best times for photos are early morning or late afternoon — fewer crowds and soft light in the morning, golden glow at dusk, while noon provides harsh top-down light and crowded paths, better reserved for rest.

Day 2: White Horse Temple

Early in the morning, enter White Horse Temple, and take advantage of the morning light to quietly stroll among the red walls and green cypresses, focusing on the Qiyun Pagoda and the two exotic-style Buddhist halls; in the afternoon, enjoy free activities, and you can take additional photos along the central axis. Return to the hotel in the evening.

Introduction to the attraction: A major highlight arranged in the itinerary is White Horse Temple. White Horse Temple is located in the eastern part of Luoyang city, originally built during the Yongping era of the Eastern Han Dynasty, to commemorate the White Horse carrying scriptures and the initial transmission of Buddhism to the Central Plains. It is honored as the 'First Ancient Temple of China,' and is the first official temple built after Buddhism was introduced to China. Within the temple, the Qiyun Pagoda courtyard, Great Buddha Hall, and Hall of Heavenly Kings are laid out along the central axis, and the incense has been burning continuously among the red walls and green cypresses for over two thousand years. Notably, there are also exotic-style Buddhist halls donated by countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, and India, presenting a unique scene of Buddhist culture spreading east and returning west. My understanding is that when entering the temple, first visit the main halls along the central axis, then go around to the Qiyun Pagoda courtyard, and finally visit the side exotic-style halls to experience the cultural fusion; visiting in the early morning when there are fewer people, with morning light shining on the red walls and ancient cypresses, is the most aesthetic and also avoids the peak times of tour groups.

Tips: There are many incense stalls around the temple, so purchase incense as needed and consume rationally. Visitors generally recommend the foreign-style Buddhist halls (Thai/Myanmar/Indian courtyards) as highly photogenic, generally finding them more spacious than expected; note that walking in the international temple area can be long, so save some energy. In practical situations, the biggest concern on long trips is dehydration, so keep a water bottle on hand and drink small amounts frequently; on the first night in highlands or mountainous areas, avoid washing your hair or taking long baths to give your body some time to adjust.

Day 3: Red Flag Canal

Today's red tour: Follow the guide to visit Youth Cave and Fen Shui Garden to understand the feats of the 1960s; in the afternoon, you can visit nearby attractions, and rest in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Red Flag Canal. Red Flag Canal is an 'artificial river in the sky' dug by the people of Linzhou on the cliffs of the Taihang Mountains in the 1960s. It has a total length of more than 1,500 kilometers, leveling 1,250 mountain tops, constructing over 150 aqueducts, and digging over 200 tunnels, taking nearly ten years to complete. It stands as a monument to the spirit of self-improvement of the Chinese nation. Youth Cave is the most dangerous section, dug by 300 young volunteers on the cliff; Fen Shui Garden and Red Flag Canal Memorial Hall fully narrate the arduous process of building the canal. This location combines red education with the magnificent scenery of the Taihang Mountains and today is also a breathtaking cultural landmark. My understanding is that visiting the memorial hall first to learn about the background of the canal, followed by Youth Cave, allows you to truly grasp the significance of this canal. When hiking along the canal, proceed according to your ability, wear anti-slip shoes, and watch your step.

Tips: The mountain sections have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear anti-slip sports shoes. Those with mobility issues are recommended to use the cable car. Visitors generally report that the 'artificial river in the sky' serves as a strong spiritual landmark, with middle-aged tourists resonating more with it. The exhibition guide is worth listening to in order to understand that period of history. According to the actual situation, be punctual and arrive five to ten minutes early for gatherings; it's better for people to wait for the vehicle than for the vehicle to wait for people, so don’t keep others waiting for you.

Practical note — Return-day tip: pack ID, power bank and souvenirs the night before; allow extra time—mountain roads are unpredictable.
